Well it's been one of those days. Played around with my carbs and went for a spin. I noticed my engine has been pinging more lately and I needed to check my timing, so I turn around back home and get hard on the gas-everything good! I get home and smell coolant and it is running down the drivers side of the block front to rear. It's coming out good, but the car is running fine. I shut it down and look for leaks. It is about impossible to see under the thermostat housing, which is my first suspect. Then thinking about all that pinging---WHAT IF its my HG:cry: I can't find where it's coming from, so I start it back up. No leak, car idles perfect. So I wait for the thermost…

Guys This weekend was supposed to be wonderful. A group of friends and myself were going to meet up at a lake and have a wonderful camping trip. Well as expected there were issues from the start. On the way to said lake I forgot some things at home and decided to head back. As I drive into my neighborhood I notice my temp gauge is not where its normally supposed to be, to be exact its a notch or so past the midway point, it normally runs at like 1/3. Freakout I pull into the spot and open the pressure relief on the radiator cap - yes I know you're not supposed to do it I wasn't in the right state of mind - steam comes pouring out for a good five minutes. Stumped I attach…

Well I have been doing a lot of work on my 71 240 and getting ready to finally put her back together, but really want to have the trans gone through. I have gone through the engine (complete rebuild) rebuilt the carbs (SU type), replaced all bushings on suspension, had complete body re worked and painted, new window seals, and windshield. It's been a long two years, and now I need to go through the stock 4 speed, but am a little hesatent to tackle the job myself. I have worked as a mechanic for several years in the past, and have worked on many different types of automotive and marine engines as well as marine lower units I would like to do the job myself, but I've never …

I have what could be described as a white noise coming from the rear end of my 72 240. soon as the car starts to roll anything over 5km/hr, it sounds like someone has left an old analogue radio on a hissy channel of static under the rear diff area. the noise is not loud and could easily be ignored with music or aggressive driving, but just slow cruising makes me wonder if there's a problem brewing under there. at first i thought it would be just the brake shoes slightly rubbing on the drums, but the sound doesnt change with brake pressure. I'm thinking i have a bearing in the rear end thats starting to get noisy. diff fluid is relatively new. any thoughts would be appreci…

My harmonic damper decided to come apart on my track car last night. It was only 54 weeks old (52 week warranty). It used to look like this... "The manufacturer reported safe rev limit with this Damper is 10000 rpms" I'm hoping the engine was not damaged. Time will tell. Any recommendations for a new damper? I'm leaning towards this one... http://www.bhjdynamics.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10&products_id=241&zenid=0usn3hloiia3ff5sr1himig8n6

My '71 Series I had an aftermarket AC installed when new, only to have it removed in 2003. A three pulley harmonic balancer was left on at that time. This last year I installed a VintageAir R134 system, mounting the compressor where the air pump once resided. System worked well but soon developed a growl near idle and at superhighway speed. The growl disappeared when the compressor was cut-out. Writing to VintageAir, they said a bad compressor would make noises at all speeds and I probably had a harmonic problem due to something being loose or vibrating. Not finding any loose bolts, I did find that the drive belt was wider than the harmonic balancer pulley grove and wider…

I want to check my timing on the 77. I have never checked the timing by myself on any car I have owned, so I am green. I have a borrowed timing light. What are the steps to checking it? I know it should be at 10BTDC. Thanks,

I'm hoping someone who's replaced the exhaust/intake manifold gasket on their 240z can give me an answer to this question; I have a new Nissan OEM Gasket- one side has flat metal plating that extends outside the perimeter of the holes; the other side doesn't. Does anyone know which side is supposed to go against the head? In other words, does the side shown in this picture go against the head?

I have a 1971 240z that I have been restoring eight years the end of next month 8/13. I had a machine shop rebuild my engine which took the guy two plus years to do. I finally got it in the car and went with thriple Dcoe 40 triple carbs and the engine runs fine. I noticed a month or so after the engine was in the car that there was a small amount of coolant on the block where there are tabs on the block that stick out past the head. I pressurized the cooling system and dropped pressure so I pulled the head off took it to a different machine shop and had them pressure test and put a straight edge on the head and they told me it was good and I told them what happened an…

I have been going over the whole car recently. I checked the ecu connections and found it has been replaced at some point in the past. The ecu has junk yard writing on it. First indication I saw that it wasn't original. The sticker says: Part #- A11-602-240 For - L24 My car is a 77 280z 4-speed manual. That seems to be from a 810 maxima. Is this ecu ok to keep in the 280? The reason I was checking things is because sometimes the car will stall. I installed a fuel pressure gauge after the filter. The fuel pressure slowly goes from 30psi while running, to 0 when it stalls randomly.

hey all , I wrote a few weeks back about doing a clutch replacement and I had problems right away , I will add that my 71 z has had a 5 speed swap from the PO and I would like some help with a issue with the pressure plate . One of the respondents to my post said that my issue was to short of a PP . What came out when I pulled everything apart was a PP that is 5\8 inch taller than the replacement PP . What I am hoping is that someone can help ID the pressure plate with some cross reference #s . it is a Ampco , 8 and 7\8s dia , stamped # e4302 , 30210 , vu Transmission has stamped on top of the bell housing # 7922151 , L5 in raised letters at the reverse switch…
