After replacing all the bushings, struts and springs and putting in a Ron Tyler Diff mount, I finally found out where the famous rear clunk problem is on my 1978 280Z. It is clunking where the axle flanges go into the side of the differential. I can push, pull and rotate the flange and feel the slop while I'm staring at it. My question is; is it usually the side output bearing that goes bad or or the gear teeth on the companion flange to the diff gear itself? Can I replace this bearing with the diff in the car? Most of these rear clunk problems seem to come from other areas such as the diff mount or the U-Joints. Mine are good. Thanks for any info! Dan Frye

With Fred & Todd's help, we've narrowed the issue with my transmission down to part #7 on the attached diagram, known as the 'Pin-Ball lever.' Part Numbers listed are 30537-E3200 or 30537-21010. I have some folks telling me it's still available, but neither of my local Nissan dealerships can order it. Hesitant to use nismoparts.com or something like that as getting it by the 1st of Sept. is important. Any ideas?

Hi All: Haven't posted much. But I'm starting to focus on my '78 280Z more now that I've brought it back to life. So I finally got around to adjusting the valves for the first time since I've owned it. Drove it for a couple years after I bought it. Then it sat under a tarp for 5 or 6 years. Then I brought it back to life a couple years ago. Finally have it pretty driveable again. Anyhow, as this was the first time I've actually pulled the valve cover I was a little surprised at the state of the cam shaft. But I'm used to the cam shafts on my motorcycles which are all pretty shiny and clean. So my question is whether the cam shaft in my Z is supposed to look like this. O…

Hi Guys, I recently emptied out my oil catch can and to my surprise it had been collecting water. It would have easily been 2L of water. I also took the block breather hose out to have a look to see if the water was going back into the block and saw a large build up for white greasy froth build up. On touch it it's like greasy blubber fat looking and has a strong fuel smell. I assume the fuel smell is because my car is running rich and it maybe just the excess fuel running down the cylinder walls. As for the water I take it to be a collection of condensation as my car runs a large oil cooler without a thermostat sandwich plate. Anyhow my question is if anyone knows wh…

I have been driving my restored 260z for about a year now, maybe 10,000km's on it since rebuild. Lately i've been having a problem with the car shuddering/chattering when i am releasing the clutch into 1st and reverse gear from a stop. giving a little throttle while releasing clutch (which i normally do) it doesnt chatter/shudder but when i am say inching forward or reversing into a parking spot it shudders like the cluch is grabbing on high spots of the cluch/flywheel. you really feel it grabbing. To my knowledge i dont remember it doing it initially, and i do seem to remember the clutch slipping once really badly as i was on the having fun on an freeway onramp. The engi…

I am trying to find this small filter either through Summit or Amazon. I have searched all the threads back to 2004 and cannot find a part #. Datsun Parts is smart and have placed their sticker over the part number. I know they have to make a profit and all but its a $20 filter max, not $33 + $10 S&H. Its definitely not a 5" breather as the packaging shows, more like 1.5" I would guess. I know many members have these on their Z's and want to do the same on mine so I can ditch the over sized breather on it that looks to be more at home a BBC dragster. Any direction on which one it is will be greatly appreciated. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Nissan-510-620-240Z-…

Well I finally succeded in solving the mysterious problem of not being able to start my 260Z. For those of you who hadn't followed the tread a couple of months ago, it was traced done to a broken wire in the capacitor, the insulating plastic hadn't broken but the wire inside had and was causing a mysterious miss which culminated in a final cestation of engin e noise. Non the less after changing the points, rotor, plugs and leads, it was the only part that hadn't been changed and was identified as the guitly component. But a strange thing occurred, [sorry if this is becoming a saga], when I plugged in the ignition leads I followed the firing order as given in Haynes. Yes …

I have just purchased a 1974 260Z and I am use to all my newer sports cars with the turbos and I was curious if there is any kits or any other way to turbo charge the l26 engine as it sits. I understand modifications may need to be made to other parts of the car but I was curious if it was possible to do in all. I have looked all over this site and noticed that mostly everyone refers people to hybridzcar.com but I'm not a member there (yet), so I can't see what they have to say. I also noticed there was a UK turbo from JANSPEED but most people said was no good. I would prefer to get a newer setup then that. I also noticed that a TT was a harder idea then necessary so I …

OK, from previous posts I have determined that my car is running a little lean and that I more than likely have a hole in the gas pick up tube. I now have another more pressing issue. In 1st and soemtimes in 2nd gear my car is acting like it would if you tried to start in 3rd gear (shaking real bad). Once I get going no real issues. Also, if I start really slow and ease into 2nd and 3rd gear I can avoid the issue for the most part. Does seem to be a little more difficult to get into gear including reverse. I am assuming and issue with my transmission or clutch but wanted to see what the groups thoughts may be. If it is the transmission any thought of where I can fi…

Little bit of a frustration this weekend. Assumed the clutch was siezed, so we pulled the Trans to replace it (already replaced clutch master/slave cylinders, bled the system, ensured slave is engaging the fork sufficiently). New clutch didn't solve the issue; still isn't engaging. It has been suggested that I have the wrong size slave, or that the clutch fork isn't pivoting properly. I'm not sure. Owe a big debt of thanks to Fred B. for helping me pull the trans. He's a very patient man... Anyway, while the transmission was out, I took some photos. It's a three-piece trans, but that's about all I can figure out. Based on the information here (http://www.zcarz.us/Tec…
