Long story short. I hauled my 83 turbo long block to Austin for a friend to rebuild in March. He has family problems so I am headed back to Austin on the 1st to pick it up. I am considering rebuilding the engine myself when I get it back. Naturally I will have the block, rods, pistons, crank, and head taken to a shop to be inspected. I have never rebuilt an engine myself before, but have watched it done in person and many Saturdays on Spike TV's powerblock. My question is this. How hard is it to do with the right tools, patience and time? Its not like I can't afford to have someone do it, but I feel this would be my next "step" in moving my skills forward and my a…

What is the purpose of this plate and will it affect my installing a new sway bar? It just seems to be bolted there, for protection? The Suspension Techniques 52100 sway bars are thicker and there is maybe 2mm clearance between the top of this _____ plate.

Always had slight pre-ignition, even with premium, (91 octane), fuel. Had this problem since doing a stroker upgrade to my Z, which increased compression. Did some research and determined I should look at my distributor advance. It was one of the few things I didn't look at when rebuilding the car. I opened-up the distributor, and found the 40 year old centrifigal advance spring was completely stretched-out. (See Pics). Lack of spring force was allowing the centrifugal advance to max-out at between 1400-1500 rpm's! Pic 1: Stretched springs in Distributor. Pic 2: New vs. Old spring. I cleaned everything up and replaced the springs with new parts having equi…

Hey guys, hoping someone has a stock oil pump laying around and can pull the pump spring out and give me a measurement. I believe I am running a HP spring and I want to reduce to a stock oil spring. I'd like to verify my spring is HP. My spring measures about 2.135" long. Let me know if you need anymore measurements. thanks

Ive recently picked up a 86' 300zx non-turbo trans (5speed) nd I have the 77' 280z bellhousing on it. but with the bellhousing on it will not shift into any gears except 5th (Possibly reverse if its a dogleg or whatever they call it). So what could be a problem? The shift rods clear the rod holes in the bellhousing and everything. but it wont shift. with the bellhousing off though, it shifts fairly well. any help would be great as I need this car running for going to work.

Ok so this may seem like a weird question but my stock L24 motor has been giving me a ton of problems and is losing compression as well as the valve stem seals are leaking now. I searched but found nothing of this sort, only people trying to run a L28ET on stock 280z N/A efi system. I have a friend who has a complete L28ET motor sitting in his garage he will sell me for next to nothing. Less then a L28e would cost me for sure. My question is, can I take this motor, drop it in on my round top su's and run it as N/A for now? I want to do a full swap later on and run it on MegaSquirt, but don't have the money to drop on the EFI and all the other things needed to go from carb…

I recently took my 78 280z for normal weekend drive from Los Angeles to Anaheim then back.it was about 40 miles back and forth. The car had no problems but once I exit the freeway I heard a knocking sound but wasn't sure we're it was coming from.when I got home I checked and the sound was coming from the engine, the sounds come from the last cylinder or by the timing chain.i always check my oil before any long drive, the car was fine before that and even with the knock I haven't notice any power loss or noticeable at least. How bad can this be? Haven't had time to open the valve cover but will as soon as I have a full day to work on it.Any ideas?

Trying to get my driveshaft out of my 77' 280z and the 4 12mm bolts that connect the driveshaft to the diff are impossible to get to and the nuts are starting to round off on the ones ive attempted. The nuts are facing toward the diff, is this supposed to be right? It seems it would be a hell of alot easier if they faced the trans side and I could use an impact wrench on it. Otherwise I dont have enough room to move my wrench and cannot even fit a socket on it because of the limited space. Help me please.

Timing #3 1 2 3

A mechanic friend that I have lots of faith in suggested I install my new timing set at hole #3. Says it will give it a little more umph. His shop has a waiting room with an armoire and a flat screen. Rovers and MBs with engine covers. He started off on Datsuns and said they used to do that a lot that it advances the cam slightly. Any thoughts on this?
