I have been fighting this for over a year, and now I must surrender to the Z Gods on this board. I am at a loss of what to do next. What I am running? 1971 240Z with 71000 miles. Stock engine with MSA header and 2.5" exhaust Z therapy rebuilt carbs (about 1000 miles ago installed), ran great when bolted up Advance distributors Rebuild OEM dizzy recurved to Eurpoean specs (static timing at idle 13 Deg BTDC, at 3000 rpm I am 32 deg BTDC) I do run a vacuum advance on top of that. New NGK resistor style plugs, but car had problem with new NGK non resistor plugs New Pertonix installed in dizzy, and new flamethrower coil. I have rebalanced the carbs and I am currently almost a…

For my 1971 FairladyZ-L, what is the correct gear oil for the 5-speed transmission and rear end, not using synthetics? The book says Castrol HyPoy but that doesn't seem to be available ...

This is somewhat my first mechanical project, so these might seem like silly questions... I have the engine and transmission out of my '70 Z. I had an annoying oil leak that would drip from the centre of the transmission onto the road, but couldn't figure out where exactly it was coming from. Upon removing the clutch linkage from the clutch cylinder I noticed the rubber boot was full of oil and this appeared to be where the oil was coming from. The inside of the bell housing is oil-dirty but not exactly wet, and the flywheel on both sides is dirty, but dry. If the rear main seal on the engine was leaking I would think the flywheel would be damp or wet looking. It doesn…

I have a late model 280zx 5speed and a 4:11 diff in my 240z and I'd like to correct the speedometer error (~10% high). A 20-tooth (red) pinion is needed but I'm having difficulty finding one. Courtesy only stocks up to the 19-tooth, which I now have. Any suggestions where to obtain one? Are there any other issues I should be aware of besides having to drain the trans first?

I'm working in that area and thought I'd go on and change it out. I've read flush with diesel fuel. I've read synthetic is best, Redline, and also read not to put syn in something that has had "dinosaur dope for 30yrs". Blue's tech tip says to flush out but doesn't say what to use. Please share 280z tried and true expieriences. Thanks for any replies.

Angularity of the driveshaft, differential and u-joints on an early Z vs later models

First, thank you fellow Z clubbers for all the responces for my electrical question. Now for one more. My Z I am getting ready to start on has a production date of 10/70 and I'm slowly learning all the little differences between this early Z and all the other Z's I've had in the past, 72 and 73's. I've read a couple of different posts about how the early Z's diff was a little more forward, resulting in more rear end clunk, and quickly worn out u-joints, so they fixed it by moving the diff back a little. Is that correct? Does anyone know when they moved the differential back to fix this problem? I would like to put a 5-speed in mine and keep the original R-180, but before…

Put some good miles on the car yesterday. Drove about 35 miles one way down to the Houston Galleria. I had the AC on and radio up and was mostly in 5th gear. I got in to traffic in the galleria rolled down the windows, killed the AC and turned down the radio. As I pulled away from a light and let out the clutch I heard squeelish moaning creak. Sounded like the throwout bearing perhaps. This did not happen before my entire chassis teardown and overhaul last summer and it didn't do it before I changed over to Redline MT fluid this last weekend. However I never have really driven the car that far since I have owned it. I got back about 11 last night and as I eased in…

The 240z I just got has a the original 2.4L engine in it. Obviously I would get more power if I dropped a rebuilt L28 but was wondering if I did a full rebuild on the L24, stroked it, port&polish the head, mild cam and the rest of the bells and whistles, how much shy of the L28 would it be in HP and torque? Thanks, Chris

My first Z arrived last week, have been working my way through POs "repairs." So here is my question...... Early 260, with Mallory Unilite dizzy, MSD 6a and a Blaster coil installed by one of the previous owners. Car would not run above 35mph of course the tach isn't working. Timing at idle 750rpm, was 25 degrees and sounded like a big V8 with a wild cam. At 3000rpm, as high as it would go timing was 47 degrees. I tried to retard timing but the vacuum canister hit the out going water hoses from the thermostat. I plugged advance tube and was able to get idle down to 20 degrees and full advance down to 40 engine will run to ~5000rpm and idles ok. Also the plug wires see…
