I know a lot of these CV adapters have been sold for 240Z's over the years, and there has been considerable discussion revolving around flipping the cages on the CV shafts in order to prevent the CV shafts from bottoming. I believe that on a 240Z (and probably a 260 and 280 as well but I don't have them to measure on), flipping the cages doesn't get anywhere near fixing the bind issue. What happens if the CV bottoms out? Well it's pretty much the same thing as if the stock U/Jointed halfshaft bottoms. John Coffey did a writeup on that on his website: http://www.betamotorsports.com/benchracing/R200handling.html but the quick description is this: I can recall one guy (scr…

Intake Backfire 1 2
by Ben's Z- 12 replies

My POS has an intake backfire. Cold, or hot, doesn't matter, happens between about 1100 and 2200 RPMS. I thought it might be the coolant temp sensor, of course not. Someone prior to me removed all the egr and cold start crap, so I have vacuum lines with bolts in the ends of the hose clamped to block everything off. A real hack job, car idles and runs like **** cold. I robbed some of the missing stuff off of ZCurves parts car but have not installed it. I slapped the fuel pressure gauge inline between the rail and the filter and I am getting about 24psi at idle. Revving the engine via the throttle shaft doesn't really change anything, it maybe goes as high as 26 to 28…

diff fluid

73 240z.. On the rear diff I saw a 3/4 inch plug (pix below). I thought it was like other cars and that is where you fill the diff with fluid up to the bottom of the hole. When my son unscrewed the plug, fluid came pouring out. It took him some time to put the plug back in and lost about 1/2 quart that he is cleaning up now. The fluid is black so we plan on changing it but how do I drain all the fluid, where do I fill it from and how much fluid should I expect to need to fill it?

So I've been having speedo problems of late and decided to check out the speedo drive pinion. Upon removal I noticed the housing is not keyed and it has an eccentric or offset pinion shaft boar. As I rotate it 360 degrees (the housing), I can feel the pinion gear engage and disengage at certain locations as I turn it. Now at this point my pinion gear is trash, so no matter where I index it, it will not drive the speedo for long (this being the problem I am experiencing). I will get a new pinion this week, but my real question here is, where is the gear that drives the pinion in relation to the center of the hole? (12 o’clock’, 3 o’clock, etc.) I realize the eccentri…

I am in the process of refreshing the engine that will be going into my 240Z track car and I need to know the size of the plug to block off the heater hose tap at the back of the head. On the engine that is current in my car I have all of the coolant hoses deleted except for the rad hoses. I like this setup as it cools very well and minimizes the potential for cooling system failure at the track. To block the heater hose port at the rear of the head I am currently using a short length of hose with a metal plug and clamp. While I've got the engine out of the car I would like to remove this coolant fitting altogether and replace it with a plug installed directly in the …

We just acquired a 1973 240z with a 280z engine installed in it. I do not know the year of the engine. I have found numbers on the engine such as "N33" and "L28 563932" below the rear spark plug. Does the L28 mean it is a 2.8 liter? How can I tell what year the engine is, and what does N33 mean? The spark plugs are set to .038 but I think they may need to be .040 or greater. I noticed the distributor has two plates with numbers and marks. Does that mean you can set the timing without a timing light?

While tracking down a pesky vibration recently I took apart the half-shafts figuring that 50,000 miles or more had gone by since their last servicing. The driver side shaft did not extend or compress as smoothly or as far as the passenger side shaft. On dismantling, I discovered that a couple of bearings and spacers had migrated to the other side of the "fence" at the differential side and the fence was itself wandering along the shaft. In short, not good. My question is quite simple: Can I use the half-shaft from a stock 260Z or a 280Z on my stock 1972 240Z? I have the R-180 differential, it appears that at least some of the latter Z's have R-200s. I figured I cou…

Which way do the serrated rubber-coated washers face for mounting the mustache bar? I know that there is an upper and a lower due to the hole sizes so they will fit over the tapered mounting bolts, but I don't know which way they face. Does the upper face towards the frame section or against the bushing? Does the lower face against the bushing? Where are the washers located?

Hey dudes, I just picked up an s30, and I'm a bit confused on a few things. I was hoping that you guys might be able to tell me what these are because I'm assuming that some of this isn't stock. 1) This is on the passengerside fender towards the front... I'm assuming it's a fuel pressure regulator, but I've never seen a dial like this... 2) This is also on the pass fender... the wiring does not look stock. 3) Block off plate on the pass side towards front of motor... 4) Finally... I know alot of people use 280zx alternators... is there anyway to tell if this is one? Or if it's stock... Thanks guys! -Nels

Dumb question. Anyplace that sells NEW ring and pinions for a R180? Or am I stuck using the old set and replacing only the bearings and seals? Thanks! Polecat

I have a 72 240z with an L28 engine. I have a feeling the radiator is stock and does not have a shroud. It keeps the engine cool, but I have not had the car long to test it in hot weather. I live near Sacramento, CA so it can get pretty hot and I live at the top of a huge hill. The radiator has a small leak near the upper tank. I prefer to have ample cooling capacity just in case and would like to get a 3-row radiator. Has anyone bought one from Rockauto? They are very reasonably priced but have a built-in transmission cooler from what I can tell. Will I need to find a shroud also? Thanks for your input, the price difference is about $100 compared to the next chea…
