Is there such a thing as an sensor system (rpm, temperature, oil pressure, or any other basic stuff) that you can clip onto the L24, L26, or L28, and uses an OBDII interface with a Bluetooth wireless connection? Maybe you can even get a Bluetooth exhaust sniffer? You can get software that runs on a computer and you can record & display the data, for tuneups, for example, or use it for other stuff like dyno calculations, track laps, etc. There are Bluetooth OBDII interfaces, but those rely on the engine's ECU, and we all know that the S30 hasn't one- even the 280Z, with its "EFI system." (I still meet people who argue you can 'reprogram' or "chip" the 280Z's EFI syst…

OK, here's an interesting question... The MSA short shift kit reduces shift throw to about 60% of stock. I'm concerned the added pieces that raise the shift pivot will add some "slopppiness" to the shifter movement & feel. Drove the Z to meet the dentless repair guy last night and tried moving the shifter from about 1" below the knob and it felt fine. So I did some guess-timate calcs, and it looks like the same can be obtained by shortening the shifter by 2.75" to 3". This is based on length to the pivot from top of the knob being approximately 10", and shift throw from 1st to 2nd being approximately 5". (I plan to measure these more accurately tonite). Shorten…

I am working on a 240z with an engine that has very few miles on an old rebuild. I have new Z therapy carbs and have them fairly well sorted now with Scotts's help. I also have the 280ZX dizzy conversion. The engine will rev but not real snappy like I remember. Ideas? Where to start? I will have to double check my initial timing advance but believe it is in the 12-15 degree range. The centrifugal advance is wroking and the vacuum advance is disconnected. Thanks, Charles

Will it work? I've read around a bunch of articles, none of them really answering my question. Thanks, Adam

Been using Castrol GTX 10-30, but now that then engine is fully broken-in, I'm thinking of adding some ZDDP to protect my cam. Alternately, I'm considering using a synthetic blend oil such as Royal Purple of Castrol Edge. Have searched the archives and the web, but it's really hard to come to any real conclusions on what's best, because most of the information is dated... So what oil or oil addditives are others using and what are your impressions? I know this is a controversial topic, and apologize in advance if this turns into a food fight...

Aquired a spare engine yesterday and I'm in the process of tearing it down. So far I know it's an N42 Block with flat-top pistons, marked 'p9006' and '.75' N47 head with externally oiled cam(E30). -Both of these were surprises... The engine is very clean inside, bores are freshly honed, good oil, and the valve train looks all new...it also came with a 5-speed trans, which will be a great winter project/upgrade on my 78 280Z... Have I lucked into something cool here, or just someone's crazy project? Told it was from a 2+2 ZX, this is supported by the W24 Intake and F54 exhaust, as well as AC, Cruise, Power steering, manifold fan, etc that were on the engine. $100. Comme…

I swung by the shop that is rebuilding my engine and had to take a picture! I have been waiting for 10 years to get this car finished and it should be done within a few weeks! I am so excited. Carl

I know loud is very subjective, but I will try to make some sense of it. I have never ridden in another 240z so I don't have a good baseline to compare it against. For most of the summer I have been driving with my windows down so I never noticed the differential whining before. I am currently running a stock 3.54 R180 with an 83 280zx 5 speed. The front diff mount is fairly new and solid. The rubber stopper is in good shape as well. With the windows up and going 55 I can hear a slight whine from the rear end over the wind and exhaust noise. With the clutch in and engine idling it is quite obvious. It doesn't matter if I am maintaining pace or slowing down the noise is …

I have an oil leak at the rear of the engine at the front of the trans. It is coming from above the oil pan, so I am pretty sure it is the rear main seal. What is the best way to replace this seal? What else should I do/replace while I'm in there? Chris

Looking for BSFC to improve a calculation's accuracy. Any data or estimates is most welcome. Right now I am using 0.4 at 5600 but I feel it may be too low.

I'm building up my stroker engine this winter, i almost have all of the parts gathered up. The flywheel will be lightened, crank will be lightened & balance, but the thing im not sure about is getting the rods lightened up, could this lead to catastrophic failure? or are they beefy enough that i can take a few grams off them and not have to worry about it? oh, and the pistons i have will be lightened up a bit too
