I've searched this topic for days and I'm still a little confused as to how to go about doing this job. The motor is the factory L24 and it is in the car and running. I'm not sure what to do with the distributor timing. Some sources say the distributor needs to come out, others say just take the cap off and hold the rotor from turning. If there's anyone who's done this job, can you please give me a step by step of how you did this. Alex

I'm about to put the header and fuel injection system back on my 280Z after a rebuild. I purchased a Fel-Pro gasket set for the job. The instructions say nothing about whether or not to use some kind of gasket sealant with the intake/exhaust gasket. Should I use some? If so, what kind?

The other day I had my 260 out and the pedal got stuck under the floor mat. In any case it revved pretty high before I could release it. Now I have a loud valve tap and the # 5 cylinder seems to have lost compression. I did not do a compression test but rather a simple finger over the spark plug hole. Could I have bent a valve? It over revved for maybe 20 to 30 seconds. Can these Z engines typically have piston to valve contact. The head was rebuilt 500 miles ago, timing chain etc all new. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated Thanks Glenn

With the plugs out and in high gear I could roll the car, which moves the cam, with one arm. Read that on here and it works great. Remote starter was $60 so I was going to buy 27mm socket, remove fan, borrow 1/2 pull bar and turn balancer bolt. I'm learning.

In the process of putting my engine back together and before I installed the cam cover I went to make sure i had oil pressure. Turned the engine over via starter motor for about 2 minutes and nothing. Took out oil pump primed with oil and tried again...nothing Took oil pump out again primed with light grease installed and spun manually with a long flat head cut and chucked into a drill......YAY oil squirting everywhere. Took out oil pump reinstalled with drive spindle, installed dizzy with cap off to watch rotor spin (which it did)....absolutely no oil pressure anywhere after spinning the engine via the starter motor. The spark plugs are removed and the engine is spin…

Is it right hand or left hand thread? Can't break mine loose. Don't want to add something like a broken valve nut to my 100 items to do list. Thanks for any help.

Hi all, I am building a mild stroker L28 and I wanted to run a couple questions by you all. I have a 90.5mm bore diameter headgasket already picked out, and will have my block bored out to either 89 or 90mm depending on if I ultimately go with a 2949cc or 3015cc displacement. I wanted to ask if anyone has any specific advice about the relationship of the headgasket bore diameter to the block bore diameter. Should I skew towards the 89mm diameter for my block walls to retain a little extra meat, and maybe be just that little bit sturdier? Or does someone think that a 1.5mm difference between the headgasket bore and block bore would be an issue I should be wary of? Thanks, …

I was explaining helicals yesterday on another site and came up with what I think is my most concise and clear explanation to date, so I cleaned it up a bit and figured I'd repost it elsewhere. Helical diffs work like this: two large side gears in the carrier are connected to the axles, and a bunch of worm gears drive off of each side gear and ride on each other in the center. The worm gears connect the two side gears together, so that when one side gear turns at a different speed than the other, all of the worm gears must also turn. When there is no load (no torque) and the unit is not preloaded (some are preloaded from the factory, some aren't), you can jack up the rea…

I've got what sounds like a click in sync with the cam. It developed a few weeks ago on a cruise. I figured that I just had an issue I could tune out with a quick valve adjustment, so I did the "fit no-fit" method for lash adjustment (hot, .010" intake, .012" exhaust). I reassembled everything, kicked it over, and... The click is still there. What am I doing wrong? Edit: forgot to mention that it's a stock L24 with an E31 head.
