Is it OK to tap new U-joints together with a hammer rather than a vice? I also used antiseize, block of wood as shock absorbing base and a socket for distributing the hammers tapping to the outside of the u-joint cap. It seemed to work like a charm but most instructions I see use a vice.

Hi, My local Nissan dealer can only order newer part numbers. I need the 4 flange bolts and nuts on each side of an early R180 differential from a Jan 71 240z. The bolts are somewhat unique and have a quadrant shaved off for clearing the round plate that protects the seal. Would anyone happen to have a part number? Thanks!

This is going to be long, but I know you guys/gals like data, so I am trying to preempt most questions. :cool:Well this winter I have been busy. I removed fuel sending unit, which showed me I had 1/2" of rust in laying some places on bottom of gas tank. And the fuel filter was filled up with a lot of rust too (I cut it open of course -and most if it got stuck right to a magnet I put near the pile of rust). So I figured out how to remove the tank (it got cleaned and restored by a pro who does that kind of stuff - washed out, boiled out, acid, and then 2 coats sealer and now its awesome), all the hoses, the fuel pump replaced (put on new original connectors for the new bosc…

Can't find it anywhere. Checked Black Dragon and it says it's only for the 240z. Is this the same housing as the 260z? My bolts are completely stripped out and I $&!#ed up trying to tap new threads. I really just need a new housing. :-/

This is my first time messing with a piston engine (im a rotary guy) I was looking at the FSm and i cant figure out where these last few hoses connect to, i do not have AC Or a heater. Also, can i just take connect the engine out hose that normally connects to the heater core, and just send it directly to the return? Does anyone know if it will cause any over heating problems?

I'm looking for the internal bearings (and related parts) for my 73 half shafts. Not the U joints, but the ball bearings that go between the two parts. Can't find any rebuild kits from the usual sources (MSA, BD, etc.) Any ideas? Thanks. Peter

i've got a FS5W71C from a z31 on-turbo, problem is the bell housing wont fit my L28. I understand i will need the l28 bell housing, but will i need to machine any new clearances for the bearings? Or should i just sell this thing and get a 280zx transmission? (if anyone wants this thing its 100$ + shipping, it has 60k miles)

So, I haven't been on this forum in a few years but I'm glad to be back. I have a 72 240 with a 2.8 and a 5 speed. My diff is the stock 240 ( I believe its a 2.70) so my drive train is a bit of a "hybrid". On to the problem... When I accelerate, or down shift, basically whenever there is torque on the drive train i hear a sharp "crack" and then some "scratch, scratch, scratch". coming from the rear passenger side When I look under the car I don't see anything "odd" no metal wear. I'm wondering if its the needle bearings in the half shafts. But what is the "Crack" sound? I replaced the differential mount about 7 years ago so I don't think that's the problem. I'm th…

I just picked up a freebie 71 240Z from a client. Body and chassis are in excellent shape. Interior is pretty bad, especially the seats from some for some number of years of setting outside in the sun. Engine is mostly there, except for looks like someone took off the smog pump and a few of the misc. hoses. Just wondering what most of you of you are using for your 240z "bible", anything besides a Haynes manual? Also, since i'm smog exempt in my area, any details on mods to eliminate the smog pump and corresponding hoses etc? This is going to be my daughter's car btw. She's the other monkey wrencher in the family in exchange for all the help she's given me for working on m…

Hey guys! Well, the Z is slowly coming together...no new pics since nothing has changed much but today we did some tuning up, adjusted the timing (which surprisingly wasn't off by all that much!) and syncing up the carbs. Next comes the valve adjustment, but after that, our big project starts... I found and bought a sweet original exhaust manifold (and got a great deal on it too!) from a good guy on the classifieds. So that means we'll be replacing our exhaust manifold...now, I'm not terribly familiar with removing things and how to go about doing that, so I would seriously appreciate some tips or help on how that process would go. I know we'll have to remove the intak…

The kid and I started out to replace the weeping head gasket. When we got it apart I found the chain was stretched and already on position #3. We've got a new timing set complete with slides and tensioner, new gaskets and are ready to put it back together. Are there any tricks, tips or pitfalls I need to be aware of on the re-assembly?
