FYI when I refresh old Z's that sat for a long time, before cranking, I always take off the oiler tube and spray carb cleaner through each inlet and also back flow through each individual cam oil hole until it is degunked and flows well. Simply using the straw of the spray can up to each hole works fine. A plugged hole will wreck a cam. Follow this up by removing the plugs and turning by hand at the damper to ensure the engine in not seized. Finally, oil the cam and rockers then crank the motor with no plugs in to watch and ensure all oil holes flow.

I got wind of this site today : http://www.bobistheoilguy.com . I kept reading until I realized the guy was insane, but it got me thinking. What is the best motor oil for my 40 year old Z? I've had a couple of high-mileage cars. I'm pretty good about getting oil changes and I've had several cars hit 200k without engine problems/smoking/losing power/etc. But I've always just bought the cheapest motor oil I could find. Maybe I just got lucky? Does oil matter? Maybe my motors last because I change the cheap oil often? When I was in college I had a '72 Z whose engine started "clunking" at idle. I was putting 5W-30 in it and a friend suggested 40W oil. So I put in th…

found this on the drivers side of my 77 280z. can't figure out what it is, but it was open and seems to have a bit of positive pressure going to it. FYI, it has been converted to a clifford intake and holley 4bbl. not sure if that has anything to do with it, but maybe also, with this clifford intake, under the carb is three ports. middle one was pluged, and the other two had broken nipples on it, i took them out, and plugged them as i know any vacuum leak isn't any good. are these suppose to go somewhere in particular?

I have been troubleshooting a recent rough idle and hesitation. Everything checked out fine, but vacuum was only about 10-12 Hg at idle. I tracked down an intake leak at the head at the #4 cylinder. Knew I had to replace the intake/exhaust gasket, so removed everything. After I had the intake manifolds off, I could see in the head that the valve (closed) was in a pool of coolant! I have 175 psi compression in that cylinder and no sign of coolant in the oil, or oil in the coolant. The plug had looked like the mixture was running a little lean, but similar to the other plugs. The engine has not had white smoke coming out the exhaust. I wonder if the coolant leaked in…

I am just about to eyebrow the block and noticed my l24 HG has same ring diameter as my L28 HG's. Is this normal or just a lazy manufacturer who does "one size fits all"?

I having a few issues with my freshly built L28 that I would like to get some opinions on. My setup is a 240z with a stock 90k mile F54 block, cleaned up P79, Isky 480lift/280duration regrind, round-top SUs, header, E12-80 ZX dizzy (mechanical advance only) with a 5speed and 4.11s out back. The carbs are balanced and my wideband says the A/F idles at 11, cruses around 14, and is low 12s at full throttle. The car runs great but I am getting some unexpected results. 1st oddity - According to my Gtech and seat dyno, the car is making max power at 5200rpm. 5200-6500 is flat and drops off a bit. The advertised cam power band is 2500-6500 so I expected the peak power to …

Here's a list of relevant cars in a local junkyard. I'm wondering if there's anything I should really try to get while they are there. The yard is getting full and I have the feeling a mobile crusher will be coming soon. 1972 240z - Interior gone. SU's gone. Sheetmetal is not bad but as expected floors are shot as are frame rails. Doors fairly solid. Hatch rusted. Hood solid but dented. Fuse panel missing cover but in excellent shape. Has a rear sway bar gold colored so aftermarket. Front sway bar stolen already. BTW rear bumber of that car has overrider bar. Also has a 5speed tranny. I got console (complete it even had choke lever and solid choke cables.), antenna, haz…

My 71 still has original 2.4 4 speed. I have a Zcar friend that has a good 5 speed from a 78 280z he's doing a motor swap on. He'll sell it to me for 250. Will the fuel economy difference pay for itself on a daily driver z in say, 6 months? Or are there better places to spend money for economy. I'll have new carbs and all new stock ignition setup... plugs wires points etc...already.

I am in the market for a new head for my 3.0 liter bottom end. I am currently using the stock 1973 E88 head and cam with about 10:1 compression. The car runs great if I keep the timing less than 30° total advance on 93 octane. If I run more timing or less octane then I get detonation. From what I have read much of the issue is the shape of the E88 combustion chamber. I like what I have read about the performance of the P79 or P90 head. I may loose a little compression compared to the E88 but it should flow much better in my setup and allow me to run more timing. Question: If I run a FI head with my stock SU intake will the intake runners line up or will FI notche…

So I was in the garage doing some prep work on my car last week for a 3 day run coming up later this week and we had just come off a couple 98* days here. And I got to thinking-my car does not tend to run hot but just in case, it would be nice to have a recovery tank. So with a little dinging, a screw, nut and a hose clamp I now have a 22 oz. non OEM but country correct reservoir. I don't think this will constitute an open container.
