I have a 73 240Z with a 4 speed and a stock rear differential. I am going to change the differential to a Subaru r 180 with 3.9 ratio limited slip. Do I need to change the speedo gear in the transmission and if yes to which one. In the future I will be changing to a 5 speed but not at this time. Thanks for your help with this. Manny

Is there something intrinsically inferior about the L24 block? I've heard about the siamesed cylinder bores of the F54 block but does that really make that much of a difference? An L26 is a stroked L24. An L28 is a bored-out L26. So why not just keep your original engines and just rebuild your original engines already in your cars? It follows that this would be a good idea for the car's resale value as well.

Wasn't sure where to put this thread. Thought of Help Me! but its not an emergency. Electrical, probably, but that's only my best guess, so I thought I put it here under Engines as system. I have a 1972 240Z with stock intake system and a dizzy from an early 280ZX. The dizzy uses the E12-80 ignitor. MSA premium exhaust system, but stock exhaust manifold, installed last August. My idle has been a little rough lately and it felt a little down on power, but nothing major and its sometimes its just one's imagination. I pulled the plugs today and took some pictures of them. The plug numbering goes from left to right in each photo (1-3 and 4-6). My plugs are usually prett…

I have an E31 cylinder head laying in the shop and was wondering if it offers any performance advantages over the E88 casting that is currently on my '73? I plan on removing the flat tops in favor of a pair of 4 bolt roundtops. My roundtops are mounted on a manifold with the casting number E41. Can anyone tell me what year Z this intake setup would have come from? Even though I haven't had a Z for many years I've been hoarding parts for a long time in hopes of finding another one to play with. I've had this head and intake for so long now that I can't remember what year car I took them off of. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Scott

I just changed my spark plugs yesterday and I have 2 questions. First is that it took longer than usual to start up, is that normal with new spark plugs? And secondly, I took pictures of the plugs that came with the car when I bought it, can anyone tell me whether it looks as if my engine is running well or not? Thanks!

Hi all, OK, this is bugging me, so I'll ask you guys what you think. I have a '78 280Z with a 5 speed. When the PO showed me the car, he warned me that the clutch engaged very close to the floor. It did -- VERY close. I later found the lock nut on the clutch pedal's push-rod had come undone, and the rod had screwed itself looser and looser. I corrected this and adjusted to specs. When I bought the car, the transmission shifted a bit stiffly, but there was no gear bump/crunch between any of the gears. After I drove the car for a while, the transmission shifted a tiny bit more easily, but at the same time it developed a small grind when going into second gear from…

I have built my 2nd prototype engine, in a bluebird wagon. It has stock carbie, stock cam, plugs are 3 heat ranges up. I have matched and slightly enlarged the ports. The valves are thinner that normal and i have found there resistance to reverse is flow is better than a typical valve with 3 angles at low lifts. I have been jumping on the gas today and here is a short file. Its a 4 cylinder can anybody make guess what my Peak RPM is? I can hear the engine accelerating a lot faster above ~6000 RPM I think its up around 8000 RPM. added pitch shifted files 5/10/2005 reving high2.zip

Hi all, I am currently having an engine made for me in England for my 260Z. It will hit around 230bhp on the engine, and Im guessing around 190 at the rear wheels. I currently have the standard MSA header: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4041/4350155683_84587db201.jpg Will this suffice for the new engine? If I upgrade to a better header, will it improve overall? Regards Hendrik

Dealing with a bone stock early model 260z. Has the low compression e88 head--- 8.3:1 I believe. Is it a worthwhile upgrade to have the existing head upgraded to the bigger valves or should I just purchase an earlier lower cc combustion chamber head? If a head swap, what is one of choice? I want better performance but not an engine that requires higher than 92 octane. Thanks Dean

Hello does anyone happen to know what the size of the Crankshaft pulley nut is, on a 1978 280z? I need to get a socket/wrench on it, before I begin doing my cylinder leak down tests. So far I havent found out what size it is listed as, in the FSM. I need to go buy it tomorrow, because I am sure I dont have anything that big. I have been able to partially view it when looking from the side of the car, laying on my back. And its looks pretty big. But it is really difficult to get at. I think I will remove the 4 bolts on the fan and at least push the fan back up close to the radiator. Then I should be able to get the wrench on it.... To actually take the fan out, and get it…

Hey guys It has come time to replace the master and slave clutch cylinders on my Z, as one (or both possibly) are leaking. Do you guys have a preference or brands to avoid? I was going to get PBR as that is what my brake master is and I haven't had any issues with it. Thanks Jan

72 240Z all original. clutch pedal failed (pushes down easily) does not allow shifting in gears. Transmission will engage in all gears when car is off and no clutching. Is this likely a cable loose? If so, can a novice mechanic repair it? Thanks
