Hey guys, I can't seem to get my engine over a quarter of the way on the temp gauge, i used both a 180 and a 160 thermo from msa and with the same results, i had a mechanic put one of those guns on my thermostat and it read only 140 after a long drive I know i shouldn't be complaining givin the z's overheating problems but because the engine doesn't get very hot it seems to not like to idle any ideas????

The head gasket on the race car blew recently (280ZX turbo engine with P90 head). The previous owner told me that he had this head heat straightend and decked .008 -.010. How far can you shave these heads before you have to use cam tower shims? I have a machine shop checking out the head right now. I suspect they are going to want to shave it a bit to be sure its flat. Thanks, Marty

I want to make sure I am following the correct timing marks. As you can see from the picture, I have multiple notches on both the indicator and the pulley. I want to make sure the correct notch on the pulley is highlighted (center mark) to set the timing. Thoughts?

My Race car blew the head gasket last time out (240Z with L28 turbo motor). So today I started in on removing the head. When I went to push the timing chain tension tool in, it did not want to go inat all. When I looked closer, the manifold side of the end chanin was already very loose. The plug side of the engine is still tight. Does this mean that the tensioner has popped out? I haven't even removed the cam gear yet. Le me know what you think. Thanks, Marty

I am confused and need some direction. I am in the process of tearing out and rebuilding the rear end. I have a question on the level of gear oil to put in the differential. I have read on here (yes, I did a search) and I remember reading in the past on the tech tips section of Atlantic Z...to fill the diff through the plastic tube on the top of it. I remember seeing a photo using the IV method, a hose and turning the bottle uside down. Both that tip and some post on here read to fill it until the plastic tube overflows, or as I read it, fill up the diff with gear oil. Mine is out of the car ( '77 280 btw) and drained, cleaned and painted. I went to put the fluid in, it t…

Hi all, I've been considering removing the coolant hoses and fittings from the intake manifold, and just running the heater line direct to the water pump.. I have a '73 with a F54/N42( shaved w/ a Delta Cams Stage 2 cam, and header) combo with Z Therapy 4 screw carbs(no coolant through them), and a ZX dizzy. I would love to hear a discussion as to pros and cons. Bruce, Arne, Dave? Has anyone done this? What was the result as far as driveability, etc.? Any problems? I have to admit that I would be doing it for cosmetic reasons to clean up the appearance of the engine compartment. I do live at 5,000' and most of my driving takes place at even higher altitudes if that is a …

Hey guys I need some info on a '72 240Z-4spd. Where the speedo cable threads onto the trans is leaking. Dealers in my area don't have any info on a car that old. Checked MSA & Black Dragon but couldn't find anything. Any info or ideas would be appeciated.

I have been noticing a strange noise coming out of my transmission. My car has 70600 miles on it, and it is a 1971 240Z with a type A tranny. IN all gears the thing seems very solid. However, when I put it into 3rd, it makes a distinct whine. This whine is only present when I give it gas. When I coast it is quiet. Not sure what this means exactly, but I would like to catch any major tranny failure before it happens so I still rebuild it. No other gear makes this noise. Just 3rd. I have replaced all of the engine/trany/dif mounts with OEM nissan parts. I did put the poly mustache bar bushings in though. Any advice/hints would be great.

Kudos to anyone who knows where "heavy mystery time" comes from. so I discovered this neat little gremlin today while trying to find a carburetor leak after getting the fuel tank reinstalled. This is WAY more interesting than a carburetor leak. With the engine idling and warmed up, I can pull any or all of the FRONT three spark plugs and there is zero difference in the way the engine idles. Not so much as a hiccup. If I pull any one of the BACK three spark plugs the engine begins to stutter and heave like it should cuz it's running on one less cylinder. The idle, at least to me, seems smooth and easy. No smoke, no stutter, nothing that I could see. Valves are adjus…

So Me and Z_Tyler_Z were at the local Pull A Part stripping a 71' 240Z before they crush it tomorrow. Weirdly enough, got a couple parts for $12 and headed home. Traffic absolutely sucked, so after sitting in the driveway for 5 minutes waiting for a break, I floored it and hit about 6KRPM's and a burst of steam "Puffed" out of the hood to fender area. Nowhere to pull over till I got around the corner. The whole time, I'm thinking "Please be a hose, Please be a hose" "And not the $300 aluminum radiator" So I shut it off and popped the hood to have a steady stream of hot water shooting onto the drivers side inner fender between the coil and the strut tower. So after a cl…
