My son's 74 260Z has a bit of a coolant leak between the head and block on the passenger's side. It is worst when you first fire it up and stops once the engine is up to temperature. The engine is original with 92,000 miles, runs strong. No white smoke coming out the exhaust, so I don't think I'm burning any coolant. Can I try re-torquing the head, or should I just bite the bullet and do the head gasket?

Im new to the forum sorry if anyone finds that fact annoying... I need help with my Z thats driving me a little nuts. My Z has this sneeze that wont go away, Ive replaced my distributor rotor, spark plugs, plug wires, adjusted my spark timing and replaced my air flow meter. Nothing seems to make a difference BUT all parts were messed up in one way or another. Ive been following specs from a haynes manual (spark gap, timing):stupid: After driving the engine smells like charcoal and burning plastic. My Idle is usually high (1200-1300rpm) when i adjust the throttle screw to idle around 900 and turn off the car, the next time i start it it will be at approx 400. Also during d…

Wrong Driveshaft? 1 2

I am getting closer to finishing up my car and I tried to put in the drive shaft tonight. Long story short is the drive shaft appears to be way too long. I have about 25.5 inches between the flange at the axle and the seal at the back of the transmission. However, the drive shaft I have is 29.5 inches long altogether and about 27 1/4 inches to the collar at the front. Also the splines don't seem like they want to engage all the way (though the flanged ends match perfect). How long should the drive shaft be for a 72 240 with a 4 spd? I have found a bunch of threads, but none with a proper length. Thanks

....its stuck! Ive torn the original seal trying to remove it & no amount of prying, pulling or cussin' works! :tapemouth The Haynes manual suggests removing the entire rear transmission housing but before I go down that path, does anyone have any suggestions or past experience to go by?

I have a newbie question. As stated in a previous post, I am trying to put my engine on a stand. I want to repaint the block and work on cleaning it up prior to having it rebuilt. The problem is, the clutch needs to be removed before the engine can connect to the stand. How does the clutch come off? Is there a special tool or technique involved? Thanks. carl

Alright, so I was taking off the transmission tonight to put the engine on a stand. I didn't know what to expect. Was it going to be a mess? Was fluid going to gush out all over the floor when I undid the bolts? I was not expecting what I found! My first thought was, "How did they get in?" I thought it was a sealed system and stood there just scratching my head. Then I finally realized that I had removed the starter in the past and that left a nice little entrance. Jeez! :stupid: carl

I've just had the stock L28 out of my '76 280Z rebuilt. It had to get punched out by 30 thou, and the dished pistons were discarded in favor of flat-tops. Can anyone tell me what the CC's on the stock pistons would have been, or even just tell me what my new displacement and compression ratio should be? I guess I'm also going to have to figure out what kind of timing to run with the new compression ratio. I was using premium fuel before, and now I'm going to need it for sure.

The good news is my front seal isn't leaking. The bad news is I haven't identified what is. I have a leak that is in the vicinity of the oil pump, but I can't tell if the leak is coming from the top of the oil pump, the timing chain cover or the section of the oil pan that is right in that area. The pooling seems to be most significant under/near the alternator mount. I've cleaned up the area with a rag and I'm letting it seep for an hour or two. I'll try to get some photos later. In the mean time, any suggestions?

Does anyone have a link to the '82 Factory Service Manual, or an exploded diagram of a 5 speed? I'm trying to figure out what the pieces are that were stuck to the magnet on the drain plug. Thanks.

I found these interesting (Series I 240). Are they a standard Series I piece as opposed to the rectangular ones found on all other S30 cars?

If you have an L series crankshaft by itself, how do you determine whether it is an L26...L28 or an L24 without measuring the stroke? In other words, are there any marks or numbers to simplify the process?

I just purchased a parts car in San Diego and I got this Nissan air cleaner in one of the boxes of parts. Can anybody tell me what it goes to? Thank you in advance...
