So I discovered something interesting over the past week regarding the age old issue of clutch throw out bearing collar height selection. We have discussed many many times how to determine what height the throwout collar has to be to achieve the now well accepted total 92 mm total height, based on your particular choice of clutch cover. What I remember in the many discussions I heard, is how the struggle to get a long enough collar almost always comes up. This lead me to assume that all that was available in new parts are clutch covers that are much thinner than the old stock 240z covers. What is new here, is that I have definitive measurements on two popular E…

The reverse lights never came on when the car was in reverse in my 240Z. Twenty-four years ago, I replaced the switch, but the lights still didn't come on. I decided to try again. I installed a new OEM switch and checked the leads for continuity. No go. I moved the gear shift and found that the transmission pressed on the reverse switch in 4th gear. I assume there's no way to fix this without opening the transmission.

I searched for a bit last night on flat top pistons in combination with the N42 head on my L28, but came up with some conflicting information. Some say this will detonate due to the increased compression and design of the n42 head. You can remedy this by running a larger cam and having your dynamic compression ratio reduce this. The other side of the story is that they run this combination with excellent results. Perhaps these folks dont run their cars nearly as hard or dont notice the detonation? I will unfortunately be running a stock cam until I go aftermarket efi (leaning mircosquirt). I do plan to run premium fuel (well...Arizona 91oct) to help offs…

I am adding electric fans and aluminum radiator to my 73 240Z. I would like to put a coolant temp sending unit (on @ 185, off @ 165). The sending unit that came with the kit is 5/8” NPT -no good. My thermostat housing has an unused port (pic below) that was plugged with an old sensor of some type ( on the right, pic below). I can’t ID the thread size on the fitting. The temp sender (on the left next to it) is 1/4 NPT. The threads on my mystery port measure slightly less than that - more than 18, less than 20. I get the feeling that this is not the original thermostat housing for my car, because I can’t find a mention of this second sensor or this hole. …

I've installing a FAST xr3000 ignition conversion in my distributor. Straight forward install. No big deal. Also I have a Fast 191 inductive coil. I plan to use rivnuts to mount both the module and the coil to the fender near where the original coil was located. (280Z) The inductive coil has a goofy mounting bracket that puts both + & - electrical connections very close to the mounting bracket where it will mount on my fender. It's a good looking piece and I'd rather not modify it but the those connections bother me. Any ideas for mounting it without cutting on the bracket?

Does anyone know how far from vertical an L24 or L28 engine block is tilted to the vehicle's right side? It's not something I can find in my FSM.

This past week, I went to get my Z ready to move to my new place from where it’s being stored, I knew the clutch hydraulics was having an Issue, because the last time I went to see the car the pedal had no back pressure. I assumed I got a either a leak or air in the system, so I bleed both the master and slave cylinder and it was totally unsuccessful. I had replaced both the master and the slave about 18 months ago when I first started trying to get this car road worthy. I think they are both made by Wagner? This will be the 3rd master I’ve installed. The first I got from AutoZone and that one wouldn’t fit due to the rod being the wrong length. I tried to cut it…

As you can see the bottom bolt where the inlet water goes has issues. i took it to a shop i have gone to for years and they could drill and tap it. They said to fix: -will need head gasket set, timing set, timing cover gasket set, timing cover, head bolts + labor They also said you had to take the friggin head off....what... I stopped by a local mom and pop garage ive never used. a friendly guy came out and talked to me. Incidentally he said he had a 240z a long time ago. He told me the other shop was full of $^!#. He said take the valve cover off and there were like 2 bolts up front you take out. then a bolt out of the water p…

I've searched past forums and couldn't find this in any of them. If I'm swapping out an automatic tranny to manual in my 73 Z, is the console the same for each, or do I need to buy a different console for the manual tranny?

Has anyone used Evans Waterless Engine Coolant? Everything I read about it, it sounds like amazing stuff. Non-corrosive, lasts forever and has better cooling properties. I saw Jay Leno uses it in all his cars now after corrosion problems on some of his cars. With my replacement engine I was thinking of using it and mitigating all the corrosion issues coolants have on internal components, end the painful replacement maintenance and environmental pain of disposal of normal anti-freeze. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Anyone have any experience with it. One draw back is the cost but it’s a one and done situation so over the life of a car it’s potential as cost sa…
