when I first got my '73 the timing chain was stretched and compression was 160 PSI. I advanced the chain to #3 and it came up to 175 PSI. This winter I replaced the timing chain, and bent a valve in process. the 5 cylinders that were good showed 175 to 180 PSI. I then got a valve job to fix the bent valves- new exhaust guides, grind, new seals- AND the head needed to be milled. After the valve job, timing mark back on #1, compression is down to 155-160 PSI. The machinist didn't actually measure the amount he milled off ( :tapemouth), but he thought it was only a few thousands. Now I've heard/read that head/deck milling will retard the valve timing, but never any discussi…

Today the temperature gauge on my 240z is running slightly over half. I swapped out the valve cover yesterday for a polished one, but I don't see why that would have caused any problems. The engine is not leaking any oil whatsoever and it's not low on coolant. Nothing has changed except for the valve cover and I have no idea why the car is running hot. Any ideas??

Has any one had any luck using Locktite to secure the diff. ring gear bolts? Bending the tabs over fatigues them and I'd like to come up with a method that allows me to change my Quaife in and out as necessary.

I was driving my 280Z today and all of a sudden white smoke started poring from the vents on my hood, I pulled over and opened it to see what was the matter. Well, the tube that goes from the cap of the radiator to this plastic container which is located right behind the turn signal lights in the front, its cap had popped off the smoke was coming from that container. Now, Im not an expert on the engine so I'm assuming Im low on anti freaze? because there was a crap load of liquid splattered everywhere but I couldnt tell if it was green or not... All I know is that it came from that container. I put the cap back on the plastic container and started to drive again, but it k…

Pretty simple question. I have a 5-speed left over from my 510 project (I think thats what it's from)of a couple decades ago, will it bolt onto my 72' 240Z? If not I have it for trade or whatever. Thanks again for the help, Regular Joe:ermm:

Graph of my L-28 dyno runs... power is at the wheels. I've seen some posts about 'how much horsepower should I have?' Perhaps my runs are a useful reference point given that my basic engine set up is a fairly common combination. Engine is: Stock L-28 (F54) with flat top pistons. (NA 280ZX short block) E-88 head with very little removed from head gasket surface - just to true... Intake port matched to stock intake manifold, very minor porting on exhaust ports. Manley stainless valves 1mm bigger intake (1.73'' I believe). Stock exhaust size. Stock valve guides. Stock cam, stock SU's (with SM needles), stock air cleaner, stock air filter Crane HI6 ignition Cliff…

i'm reading along in my engine rebuild book, and it says that i should paint my gasket with aluminum paint if it hasn't been already. i got my gasket from MSA, and it seems to not have any coating on it. is painting necessary with newer gaskets? what do yall think?

Yet another thread on my swap. I've done some searching, and haven't found clear cut answers to these questions. I was hoping some of you more experienced members could shed some light on this for me. Late '74 260Z with a 100% stock L26 (currently converting to Ztherapy round tops) My carbs will be here tomorrow, so I'm trying to button up some last minute things before they get here. First of all, I got rid of the coolant lines and hoses that ran through the original intake, carbs, and balance tube. Can someone verify that the way I have my coolant routed through the heater hoses and everything is correct? Reducer from 3/4" hose down to 5/8" going to the heater…

I'm in the process of dropping the differential and am wondering if I can remove it with only un-bolting the top of the half shaft where it connects to the differential. My qustion is, should it push back along the splines enough to clear the bolts and drop down? I seem to need about 3/8 of an inch more to clear. Just tryng to avoid messing with the wheel side end,at least until its a little easier to get at. Thanks, HCH

When I drive my 72 240z (with the 4 speed) I have an RPM of 2700 for 50 mph. This seems like my car is geared too low. I have been told that I have a 3.36 ratio differential. On a stock 240z what should my RPM be for 50 mph?
