As some of you already know from previous post, my 73 resto/refresh winter project is going pretty well and the resto shop doing the work is now addressing the mechanical part of the Z. Car was motorized by previous owner with a stock L28 (76, 280z) with standard N42 head. 5 speed trans. from the 76 was also put in by po. There is some oil leaking and gasket needs to be replaced and head to be shaved. Car will be my weekend driver next summer and I do not plan present or future to race it in any form (no stroker). Questions: What is the generally recommended shaving thickness and type of gasket in order to obtain maximum performance and reliability from my L28/N42 comb…

Hi I’m a new Datsun 240z enthusiast from Denmark who has imported a 240z from USA. I’m now nearing the end of the restoration of the car and just fired up the engine this weekend. As the headline suggest I encountered some idle problems, but first I will just describe my car. 1973 Datsun model 204z - produced Dec 1972. Manual 4 forward, 1 reverse gearbox. As far that I can tell it’ a stock L24 engine with emission control Round top 3-screw SU carburettors, must at one point have been changed from the original Hitachi flat top carps (?) I removed the air condition system. New ignition coil Compression test shows between 135 and 150 psi. The car seemed to run fine bef…

When I took my distributor out, the housing was packed with a thick grease. It was grey/silver in color. I haven't found any reference to putting grease in the housing during a rebuild in any of my manuals. Anybody know what this is and is it recommended? Bob

So I spent most of last night fixing an oil leak caused by a bad gasket on the oil pump. Once i finished that I set my timing and took the car out for a quick spin to check the seal. Once I got back home I looked under the car to see if it had worked and I noticed a stream on coolant running from the back of the block. iIfollowed it up to the top of the block and found that there was a leak coming from the head gasket and spraying onto to transmission. Its a small leak. It's not blowing any smoke so I think its just leaking to the outside. Does this mean its time to replace the gasket? This isnt work I would do myself, so if yes how much does it usually cost to have this …

I am hoping the wise and esteemed masters can help me...we finally got the carbs sorted out and the car is now running fine (even better when I remember to put gas in it)...anyway...I have been having a hard time shifting into Reverse and other gears...we have diagnosed the problem to be the slave cylinder and I have a call into NAPA to see how much it will cost to get a new slave and master... The reason I need help is I would like to go ahead and change the clutch assembly at the same time. My car is a '71 240z (Build date of 12/70) but the previous owner installed 5 speed out of an 83 280zx. My question is which clutch do I buy? Which pressure plate? Which throw-ou…

I have noticed on every z motor I have pics of the timing indicator tab is located on the passenger side of the car. Mine is on the drivers side. Is this a common place for just the 73? Searched around but can't find an answer. I have a new one for the left side and I think my original was "lost" at the platers, still hunting for it. The notch on the damper is also on the drivers side. What gives?

Interesting article in the Nov. Classic Motorsports Magazine, on their Z Car project. Engine rebuilt by Sunbelt Performance, Balanced Performance Motorsports and John Williams in Atlanta, GA. Stock L24 started at 134 HP at the rear wheels... and 169 HP after the rebuild.... FWIW, Carl B.

I'm getting ready to put the 79 280ZX 5-speed into my 73. I noticed that the 5 speed only has one electrical connection, toward the front of the tranny near the shift fork boot. I assume its for the reverse lights. The 4 speed had 2 elec. connections (back-up lights and neutral switch I guess). If I don't connect the neutral switch, is that annoying seatbelt buzzer going to be going off all the time?

I have installed an 83 5 speed into my 70 Z. I have read in previous threads about an "inner shift boot" that protects the top of the tranny from dirt, etc. Mine does not have this, is it supposed to? I never saw one on my original 4 speed, so not familiar with it. This is not the inner rubber boot that goes under the shift boot over the console, but one underneath it. If there is one, what is the part number? Would like to order one! Thanks!

Here's a pic of my almost complete engine bay. This weekend I cleaned and painted my fuel rail, installed ignition & alternator wiring, etc. Still need to replace the positive battery cable, install hose clamps and clean-up the emmision components. Starting in mid-January I plan to figure out how I'll mount the compressor, condensor & routing for the AC lines.
