I am looking to upgrade my 240Z to a 5 speed. I got a t-5 out of an 83 turbo 280ZX. Is this over kill for a hopped up 2.4L? What would be the best rear gear ratio? I was looking at the R180's out of a subaru. An R200 is stronger though in case I ever stepped up to a bigger engine. I just want something thats fun off the line that I won't have to rap out to get up to freeway speed. Any suggestions?

just looking in jegs and they have a 260* cam (they also have a 252* listed as well) for the 2.4-2.8 still available for $136. i'm thinking really hard about doing it so long as i have the engine apart. i still have to reassemble the engine but i've cleaned up the ports on head and i'm putting the arizona Z intake, 390 holley and header on. i figure i might as well take advantage of what i've already done/planned.

Car will turn over, run for 4-5 seconds, then shut off. I was going to get a fuel pressure guage to see if the pump is working(around 30psi I suppose???) What else can I check for if its not the fuel system? Would it be the computer?

As I have mentioned before my car has always had issues revving past 5k. It use to stumble at around 4500, but after replacing my cap and rotor, things progressively got better. Now I can rev her to 5000-5500 rpm. Once I get to that point, crazy things start to happen. The tach needle runs smooth as a swiss watch normally. Idle and rpm response are great. Once it hits around 5000 rpm, the tach needle bounces around form 1000 rpm to 6000 rpm quickly. Its crazy. I think the car starts to stumble at that point as well. Its just weird for it to act so perfectly at all other times, then do this. Any ideas fellow Z car owners... I have checked my pertronix and it se…

I recently converted my 73 to a 1980 ZX electronic distributor. Has been working well. I assume since there are no points that these electronic distributors have no need for a capacitor. Is that correct, because I didn't notice a capacitor when I took it off the ZX? Thanks, Victor.

Hey, I am new to this blog and am hoping for a bit of knowledge. I am about to buy a 1981 280zx and would like to know how i would go about converting the car to a manual transmission. If you could also let me know what different transmissions would easily fit into the car. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. thanks

I've searched the archives and didn't find the answer to this one, although it was referenced several times. MSA says the 70 e31 head gasket is NLA. However, also they say the newer gasket is the replacement part and will work fine. I just compared holes in the new gasket with the old one and there appears to be some significant differences in the water passages. Anybody know if what MSA is saying is true? I'd like to make sure I've got the right gasket before I start bolting everything back together. Thanks. Bob

I was considering a v8 swap from the beginning. About 6 people I know are serious into mustangs and one guy is a GREAT tuner for them. Between everyone, I could put together a stock 302 with there parts. I have the oportunity to pull a 5speed from a 77 280z and was wondering if there are any trans adapters built for the 302. Would the tranny hold up to the 302?

Other than checking for references, reputation, local BBB, etc., does anybody have any thoughts on how one can properly evaluate an engine rebuilding shop? What do you look for and what questions should you ask? Thanks!

I know, I know.... Call it what you want.... A shot in the dark, or needle in a haystack. It's out there somewhere though. Mine runs great but I'm aiming to do a full up resto on it and a numbers matching car would be nice. So....It may be slim but worth a try. L24-063102

Im getting ready to pull my motor and have it gone through. It will be stock with no modifications except for the intake which is a Bob Sharp with a 4bbl. What in your opinion is the best oil to run after its all said and done.

Starting to tear my extra differential apart. Not all the way, but just enough to put new seals on it and give it a thorough cleaning. My question to anyone who might know is... When i open it up, how do I get all the gear lube cleaned out of it? My parts washer uses a waterbased solvent that is only good if you wash all the parts down immediately after cleaning them so as not to rust them. In a differential that is impossible to do unless I take it all the way apart.
