Well, I know lately I have been all over the board asking questions and now I have another. It seems as soon as I figure one thing out another goes wrong. I finally got the carbs worked out (ok, not entirely) but now that the Z's running I wanted to take it for it's first test drive only to find out that the clutch is unoperative. The pedal has absolutley no resistance at all, I pumped it at least 200 times with no change. I looked for signs of leakage and found none, and the fluid is topped off. I looked down near the bottom where the slave cylinder is and it is also dry, but when the clutch is pushed in there is no movement at all at the cylinder. I tried mov…

I acquired a complete F54 block P79 1983 280zx motor. It did have a blown head gasket and here is my question. After removing the top end and looking at the existing head gasket and the coolant passageways. It seems to me that the wrong head gasket might have been used by previous owner or mechanic. Some of the openings for coolant flow were blocked off by this head gasket. Is this normal? I'll post a picture soon but on the gasket itself you can see where coolant was going to the gasket but not through to the other side. Has anyone else noticed this?

Can anyone tell me what markings are on the bolts that secure the pressure plate to the flywheel? I know they are hardened but I don't know what the marking are. Thanks. Joe

I just got off the phone with my Z shop. They will do the valve job. Forgot who posted it, but thanks for the specifics that I should say! . Though I was talking on the phone to the guy, and he was saying that if I get the larger valves put in, and the stage III cam, that I should do a rebuild on the bottom. Said that the Pistons rings might go out. I would love to rebuild the block, but don't have to if I don't NEED to. You know what I am saying? I have X amount of funds and want to dump it into the engine bay, some exterior and all my interior, while getting my motor running. I know that it is a good idea, but is it necessary? I can't seem to remove the rear axle nuts to service the wheel bearings and install my rear disc brakes. I've read the archive posts and tried a few of the procedures without success. Also, an impact wrench (suggested by a local Datsun mechanic), seems to have no effect... I don't have brakes installed, so I can't engage the parking brake. With tires chocked and a 4' breaker bar, all that happens is that I rotate the tire. (not enough traction and the tire slips on the garage floor). Hey guys, I have a 76 280z that ive been working on with my dad for about 2 years now, we havent really gotten that serious about it until now. The only problem is neither of us are very mechanically inclined, nor is anyone in our family. But i've done some research and figured out some things but the reason im posting this is i still have a few questions im hoping you guys and gals can shed some light on. Found my issue with a car that would not rev.. let me describe the symptoms, and maybe this solution will help others. My car no matter how smoothly or harshly I hit the throttle it would rev to about 4500-5500 and start to miss and sputter. Acceleration would stop entirely and the car would sputter around and the tach needle would oscillate up and down. Very disturbing. I thought it was timing at first so I adjusted that. I still may need to pull the distributor to see if the mechanical advance is gunked up. That was some good advice form a friend on these boards. i was trying to pass a semi truck goin up a steep grade on the highway i was goin 55 in forth gear so i put it in third and floored it and past the semi and got a little ways ahead. then as im bout to shift back into forth all of a sudden i lost all power and and i slow down very fast and then semi comes roaring past me and the driver shoots me a crazy look and then i see white smoke came bilowing out from the grill. i try to restart it and nothing happens. i opened the hood and white steam billows out. i had my buddy pick me up and he said coolent was comming out from one of the gaskets and my motors blown and i says no way.

Does any one have a photo which shows an installed differential damper? The shop tells me the rear sway bar is hitting it as it rotates. I want to make sure the damper, as shown in this photo, is properly installed . Thanks, Fixitman

What are your thoughts on Iridium Spark Plugs? I was originally going to put them in my Z months back (was told they improve performance) but ended up going with the NGK Stock Plugs. Would iridium plugs make much of a difference?

While I am a fan of keeping my car stock, I wanted to touch on the subject of the air intake box on the stock 280z. Does the stock setup restrict air flow versus using one of the K&N canister type air intake tip filters? I currently use the K&N filter for stock air intake box. Would this be about the same (intake wise)? Thanks!

Hi, I have a 1975 280Z and there is white smoke blowing out the exhaust. There is slight discoloration of the oil as well. .. (light brownish). I also notice that the coolant level drops after every run just a little. My conclusion is that I have a either a blown head gasket or cracked head. Has anyone used alumiseal (did I spell it right!) before? Would you recommend it.? Any advise will be appreciated. Thanks.
