my 72 z is pretty much a project car (my second 240z). I very much have my hands full with other things and don't get much time to work on it. Its a toy. 2 years ago, I left it at a transmission shop over the winter to have a clutch installed. When I picked it up last spring, I coudn't get it going. It woudn't start, tried every thing (ultimately I think it was stale gas). This spring I finally got it going, but pulled the alternator off, and only put it back on yesterday. I started it up (runs nicely), but a huge puddle of oil formed under the rear of the engine/front of the transmission. It to be blunt is leaking like a sieve. It never leaked before I took it to the t…

Just an FYI. McMaster didn’t have the “exact metric partially threaded bolt size for my half-shafts. And I wasn’t willing to pay $28 plus $12 shipping to ***dat on eBay for a set. So when ordering my new diff mount, I asked MSA about availability of half-shaft bolts. While they don’t show them in their catalog, they got me bolts for $1.80 each and nuts for $.80 each. Much lower cost! (and I only had to buy how many I needed, not a whole set). Just shows it does'nt hurt to ask...

I am thinking of removing the "smog rail" (right term??) from my stock '71 240Z. It looks like I will have to plug the holes in the manifold with pipe plugs. Anybody know what size/thread plugs I will need? It looks like all the fittings are pretty rusty/corroded, can I expect them to be so stubborn as to cause problems?? I am planning on swapping this motor next spring, so if this is a tough job, I may just wait until I pull the motor or replace the headers down the road. Any help??? Regards, Astrohog

Well, its been a few weeks since I have been able to work on my car and the little time I had, I spent on some interior work. I finally (with the help of Sblake01, thanks Stephen!) was able to figure out why my car was not starting. On a side note Stephen, instead of wiring the car back as it was, I opted to rewire a new kill switch and got that in yesterday. A simple on/off toggle, placed low to the floor in the driver side panel around the dogleg area. Works great, flip the toggle to off and the car will just crank, flip it on and she fires right up. My problem is the car is still missing and smoking (black) from the exhaust. It seems to idle well enough albeit a littl…

I am looking to locally source the (four each) studs, nuts, and washers that couple the water pump to the water pump pulley and fan clutch flange. I have searched the archives and come up with no results (hard to believe). The car is a 05/1972 manufacture. The parts manual calls for the following: Studs # 08226-61410 - stud M6 coupling to water pump Nuts # 08911-10610 - nut - hex M6 Washers # 08915-13601 - washer-spring M6 Must I pick these up from Nissan, or are there good substitutes available out there aftermarket? My guys at NAPA drew a total blank when they looked it up. They are usually pretty helpful with finding stuff, and I find it hard to believe tha…

Please pardon the (probably) basic question, but I put my 73z up on Jack Stands yesteray for a "go through and clean up" project on the rear end, and I'm planning on swapping in a lower geared (numerically higher) differential. I pulled the wheels, and half-shafts, and as I look at it, it's not clear what the best procedure is for getting the diff out. I could unbolt the brackets for the control arms, and the whole front differential bracket, of course, and this would give PLENTY of room, but I wondered what folks have learned is the best way. Racers? Ye who have swapped these out on a track-by-track basis? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated. ('73 240, stock R18…

On a 1978 280Z. I just had a professional mechanic service my car because I tried to put on a new set of ignition wires ( spark plug wires) and I couldn't get the bloody thing to start! I got out my Haynes book, and looked up the firing order and the picture of the dizzy cap, and hooked it all up according to that information. It didn't start. Then I took it all off and did it again with the same results. I even put a dab of paint on the #1 tower. After a few attempts I got out my FSM, and looked up the dizzy stuff. It had the exeact same picture of the dizzy cap, and the firing order. It still didn't start. Finally I decided to get the pro guy to look at it. …

I recently purchased these fuel injectors (D1560BA marked on the side) from ebay. I noticed that they were different from my original injectors on my 1978 Dastun 280z. Have anyone come across these injectors before, will they work on my car?

I adjusted the valves as per the 1973 factory service manual. .025 I / .030 E. Hot. I noticed the vacuum at idle is up slightly, which is good, but the valvetrain noise is worse. The noise appears to be uniform across the valvetrain, which leads me to believe the adjustment is too loose. I do know the block is original, and the head had a "30" on it as did the cam. Car was built 11/72. Oil pressure checks out. I did have to open up the clearances a lot, in fact, a couple of adjusters are bottomed out in order to achieve the proper lash. Thanks for the help; Ted.
