I know almost nothing about differentials, but I have an R200 w/3.90 gears out of a 1980 2+2 that I'm looking to put into the Z. The ring gear looks great but the spider gears show some galling. I talked with the local diff expert and he says he can't get the spider gears. I searched the web and can't find a source either. Courtesy says they are NLA. Does anyone know where to get replacement spider gears or the whole shabang including a rebuild kit?

So, I am ordering some $3,000 to $4,000 worth of parts for my car here in the fallowing week. I am going to get a Cam kit. Stage II maybe Stage III. I have the E31 head. Going to get the cam put in myself with the help of a buddy hopefully. Though, I was wanting to put in the larger 260/280 Z valves. For these larger valves, where can I find them by themselves? I have not been able to do so. Also, how much of a bore needs to be done on the valve ports when I take it to the shop to get the ports machined?

Will an electric water pump and a performance harmonic damper really help anything with performance?

71 240Z with 69569 original miles on the engine. Changed plugs, all were a lovely light brown color on the electrode but were burning cleanly and even. The last thread on each plug and the land that sees the cylinder was a a bit shiny black, meaning probably I have a tad bit of oil seepage down inside the wall. Car does not burn a drop of oil that is measurable, and never smokes. Changed out the stock vacuum advance as the diaphram was completely shot. I am happy to report my car almost eagerly revs to 6500 before any drama. I think the carbs may need a tiny tweak or two, but my 5000 rpm wall is gone and she pulls smoothly up the rpm band. No hurry to mess with the c…

Im not exactly sure what it is or why its happening. Im not even sure if it is a missfire. Ok, let me explain it the best I can. The car is a 71 240z. With no consistant pattern the engine will suddenly drop 300 to 500 rpm and then catch itself and return to idle. Almost like I turned the key off and then back on again quickly. That is at idle. When going down the road the car does the same thing except when i try to give it gas it just makes a sucking sound because theres no combustion(im guessing), then the car will catch itself, but because the car is in gear it will learch(quite embarrasing). Because of this I have not been driving it much and just been tinkering…

I have seen L28's with a mini filter (like the K&N barrel filters) on the little flange on top of the Valve cover. I figure this is air intake as well right? Is there any improvement in removing the hose that runs from the cold air intake to the top of the valve cover, and replacing it with one of those tiny filters? The only issue I see is that the air that will draw into through the top (valve cover) won't be from the cold air intake, but hot surrounding engine air. Will this allow more of the air from the intake to just go straight to the manifold, or am I grasping at straws here trying to think up ways to gain 10 hp? If you guys have no idea what I'm talking a…

So, I just noticed that their are adjustable performance cam pulleys for the Z. How exactly do these work? 8 way adjustable or something like that. Are the stock ones 3 way adjustable? Was looking at it and noticed three holes with their own numbers. Doubt that I will get one. Just curious at how exactly they work.

So, is this a bad idea? I was over at the transmission calculator site. I was thinking of keeping the 4-speed since I really enjoy it. Checking out the different differential ratios, seems like a new diff might be on its way out, or the 4-speed. Anyone with a 4-speed and higher diff ratio then stock? Looking at it, the 3.54 diff seems pretty much the same as the 3.36, just a minor difference. Still pretty much 3,000rpm at 65mph, but once you get to 3.7 and higher, things seem to start going out the window. 3,000rpm = 60mph w/ 3.7. Mostly concerned of top gear RPM count at higher speeds and it just seems like everything went out the window. Acceleration sure does…

Can you use a Borg Warner T5 5 speed from a 300zx in a early model 1971 240Z? I have searched but have found any info saying what differences are between the 81-83 Borg Warner T5 and the ones from 300zx's. Is it doable? I have read the zgarage procedure and it doesn't mention the later versions of the bwt5.

What is the purpose of the damper plate mounted under the differential case mounting front member? Is it needed? Thanks, Fixitman

I got a 76' 280., ran out of gas (my son). Car was running perfect prior. Now, it will start and run for a minute or so, then backfires and dies. I'm thinking we got a bunch of crud from the gas tank in the fuel filter or something or maybe clogged the fuel filter. Any ideas? I'm a neophyte at working on cars, so any help will be appreciated.

Is there a way to check the oil press gage from the sender connector to the gage? Looking at the schematic, the path to ground is thru the sender. Does anyone know if the gage climbs as resistance is increased or decreased? I have a rheostat I can use to check, just don't want to have the polarity backwards and drive the needle downward past 0.
