I did my research and decided on the 81/83 zx 5 speed and a later switch to a 3.9 or 4.11 diff.... Saved my money and ordered a rebuilt from a reputable z shop that does tranny rebuilds. There was some confusion evidently because they sent me a 77/79 z 5 speed. Not the ratio I wanted, I'm very disapointed because now they tell me they don't have one within the years I want and I have this fresh 77/79 sitting on my front porch. They have offered a refund if I want but I thought I would get some input from others that have run this tranny, before I go to the trouble of shipping it back. How bad is it? Is second gear right on top of first like the #'s show and how bad is the…

My 70 240Z had a 5 speed and R200 diff from an 82 280ZX installed a year ago. Was noticing a lot of whining, and other noises coming out of the rear end. Was figuring a rebuild on the diff (as it is still over 25 years old). Decided to look into getting different gear oil to see if that will quiet the noise down. Couldn't get my hands on any Red Line in a quick manner, so went to Napa and got some Royal Purple 75W140 synthetic gear oil. Figured that the thicker oil might quiet things down, and it would be a cheap alternative to a rebuild! Just finished driving it around and I can't believe the difference the 75W140 makes over whatever standard oil I had before! Wou…

Well, I decided to try to tackle my rear clunking I heard on my new baby. I crawled under her today and poked around at what it may be. Before I tell you what I discovered, Let me explain the noises. When you put the car in 1st or reverse and let out the clutch, no matter how gently or slowly, you hear something mechanical make a very muted thud. Its just one thud, but it makes it each time you go from 1st to reverse. I also hear a thud from the back end each time I get on and off the gas in 1st or 2nd gear, like the diff is torquing up. That about sums up my clunking issues: So I crawled up underneath to see what I could see. This is what I found. The car is in n…

Anyone know who supplies quality engine gasket sets for two early 240 zeds. I am basically wanting to know which brand is has the better quality product in their kits as I need to ship them to Australia and I do not want to risk a brand that is just not up to scratch. The US brands are a bit unknown here so any advice is appreciated. If anyone in Australia knows where I can get a set here then let me know. Nissan were of little help and the local zed man makes his own? Craig

My 3speed automatic transmission started to leak and took propeller shaft to see what's going on. I found out that rear seal was in pieces, but the didn't harm the rear part of gearbox(new seal is going to be tight). I was trying to figure out what caused that and noticed that the axle which is inside tha gearbox is very loose. Should it be like this or should it be tighter? Is there a bearing which holds the axle steady?

A bit benchracer in nature and also a bit useless as I don't intend to mod my car at all, but... I've read in various places that the 280Z was nebulously "rated at 150 in 1975 and then at 170 horsepower in 1977" (usually with some specific note that the engine wasn't actually changed), in other places that all 280s have either 150 or 170, or etc... But it seems like the 77's injection system was at least different in having lambda sensors if I'm not mistaken... could that account for the difference? I'm sure this has been covered here before, but it's a rather hard subject to search for so What exactly ought to be the horsepower of any specific 280Z?

Quick question. Is it possible to have: 260 base engine 280z crankshaft E88 head??? Or the opposite? 240Z base engine 280Z crankshaft 260 head??? I spoke with the previous owner on my 240Z who was in California.. Does that make sense???

As the title states I am currently looking for a diagram to ensure that this California Z, belts are correct. When I got the car it was missing half the belts and then again some belts appear to be bypassing pulleys. Ive checked out a few websites and forums but have not found a decent diagram. Anyone have a nice diagram or even a decent looking picture of a Z with a smog pump? Thank you all for your time.
