Engine performance 1 2 3

Every pay check I put a little more into my 1983 280zx. It has the same engine in it that it rolled out of the factory with. What I am looking for is advise on little things here and there that I can do to increase engine performance. I looked in the archives, but I could not find specifics for my question. Does anyone have a story or instruction on something they did to their engine that worked for them? I know this is a broad question, but its a start. I mean anything, from aftermarket O2 sensors to custom enhancements you came up with yourself. Any advise is appreciated.

I am interested in putting flat top pistons in a n42 block. ITM lists them out of the 81-83 zx f54 block. Are these the pistons to order or what is the right ones. They need to me first overbore. I was told by the parts guy that the f54 rods had bigger piston pins than the n42. Did Nissan change these rods? Or did I found a incompetant parts guy? I have been on here and hybridz for a few hours and am coming up with nothing. If I am in the dirt here can someone please point me back to the pavement. Thanks

Hi all, I have the opportunity to puchase a 50,000 mile FS5W71B 5-spd tranny, and I have a question about which clutch set(disc, pressure plate, and throwout bearing/clutch collar) to use. My car is a stock 73 build date 6/73 with 74,000 actual miles on it. So is there any advantage or disadvantage to using the 280Z clutch set or should I stick with my 240Z clutch set? At 74,000 miles should I even bother to replace everything? There are no clutch issues with this car. It takes up firmly and does not slip. I will replace the throwout bearing and pilot bearing. I used the search feature and found out lots, just not about this question. Thanks for the input. Cheers, Mike

Hi all again, Sorry to be wearisome, but this is the place for knowledge. As I stated in my other post about clutches I am buying an FS5W71B 5-spd tranny w/ 50,000 miles on it. This question is should I take a peek inside to check the notorious main and countershaft nuts which like to back out causing much havoc, or should I leave well enough alone? What should I look for (if that's the advice), and what should I do to prevent the nuts from backing out? I have to say that I have NO experience with trans missions, but am a pretty capable mechanic and can follow instructions. I have the FSM from Courtesy and the Haynes manual, also. The owner said the tranny had been a r…

Background Info: I have a '74 260Z that I transplanted the block and head from a '81 280ZX into a few years back. Regarding the head, I took a new ISKY stage II cam (with matching springs and lash pads) down to my local NAPA machine shop, and had them clean and rebuild it. They said the rockers were in good condition, and there was no reason to get new ones.. After the first 1 or 2K miles, my head started making alot of noise, so I thought I should check the valve clearances. Cold and hot everything was fine. Then it starts gettting really loud. So loud that I don't even want to drive the car anymore, so I think maybe there's a stuck valve. I was in the process of…

I have an early model 240z that I am restoring and am planning on rebuilding the engine, clutch, and transmission. I have no knowledge that there is anything wrong but the car is 40 years old and hasn't been driven/started in the last 10 years or so. This may sound like a stupid question but what do I rebuild? I have a friend who rebuilds engines for a living that is going to help me but there are so many things/parts. I have read about the valves/guides/etc. needing to be updated because of lead free gas. I guess I was planning on buying as many replacement parts as I could afford and letting my friend go to town. Should I wait until the engine is apart and rely on…

I have a 1975 280Z that I bought not too long ago. I thought I had the original engine but as I am learning more about the car, I came to find out that both the engine and tranny are not original. I looked at the numbers stamped on the cyldinder head and engine block and this is what is stamped. Cylinder Head: N47 Engine Block: 179109 I could not find anything on the Chilton Manual as to which year these are from. Can someone tell me which year the cylinder head and engine block are from? I blew the head gasket. I was told that the N42 head was more desirable. Should I just buy an engine that matches my year or just rebuild this? Is the combination that I have now r…

What is the best CAM for me to get to pair up with a turbo on my '76 280z?

could this be caused by fan clutch leak? i did a search and tested fan with cardboard and it stopped fan, thus not siezed. when rev engine there's not a whirlwind of noise or wind. i'm thinking fan clutch is ok. i noticed last fall just before i put in storage that there was specks of oil on underside of hood but not there everytime i drove it. i put cardboard under car during storage and no leaks. doesn't use oil.( although hard to tell because i change oil once a year before i put it away and drive under 2000 miles pure season.) never have to add oil. i can't recall if this gunge was on the motor when i bought it or if it's gradually accumulated over the last 3 summers.…
