So I broke off 3 head bolts getting the head off...but they came out with some heat and vice grips...whew. Then I cleaned all the old gasket off and looked at the piston tops. #6 is pretty badly pitted, the rest look pretty smooth. I guess I have to replace it. While I do that, I'm going to replace the rings and the main bearings. The journal/connecting rod bearings appear very new, so Im going to keep those. Theres some bolts I didn't label that I'm going to ask for some help on later , I thought we got them all but then found a few sets on the floor and now now I can't remember where they're from.

I was fortunate enough to meet up with another member BEEZEE, who had a great oil pan and oil pump for me. I also got a '71 water pump because my fan clutch appears slightly bent. When I removed the '72 water pump, it is slightly different from the early one. The early one has bolts threaded into it already, and the front is slightly different. The '72 fan clutch fits on it and looks ok, but I'm wondering if anyone has an opinion on using the early water pump with a later fan clutch. I'd like to keep the early pump I got because its in great shape. Thanks again, beezee. Zak

Hi, I've had my 1973 240z now for 18months. I've finally got it fixed up the way I like it inside and out. It has a rebuilt L24 , Firenza Aluminum Flywheel, 1982-83 5spd Tranny with New Clutch/Master Cylinder and an R200 Rear-End. Car runs super and solid. My Question for both Observations: Is this normal, if not what could it be? 1) With car idling once warmed up (I keep it at 900 RPM, 17BTC) and the Clutch Depressed to the floor - it idles rock solid. When I Release the Clutch and let it out while the car is in Neutral - the idle drops to ~750-800 RPM. It then creaps back up to 900RPM after 10-20sec is my estimate. It's a noticeable drop however and very slow …

Hi All! With help from a couple members here I got the 280ZX dizzy swap done on my son's 72 240z (auto). It fires right up now with little or no choke from the Webers. I live outside of Denver at about 5500 feet above sea level. What should I try as far as the timing goes? I know there are too many variables to tell me exact but a ballpark? It's running now and seems to be ok but just a little sluggish from idle and there were a couple backfires through the carbs. Thanks in advance for your help! Thanks, Mike

So when I bought the car it ran awesome. Rev'd up super fast, never bogged. That was last summer. Now I know you're all gonna $^!# on me . But I had to run the car open carbs without air filters (and the car runs triple dellortos) when I first bought it since the gentlemen that sold it to me only had air horns and no filters for it. The car sounds sexy but I know how bad this is. I did an oil change as soon as I got home and bought filters for it. I had to drive the car relatively a 200kms from where I got it back to home before I did all that :S Now in regards to timing. I don't know if the carbs are clogged, but the car bogs down low now and but hits h…

hey all, my 77Z admittedly has a bit (a lot) of slop in the gear selection handle. sometimes when i turn the car off it fails to start. dead. i move the selector to 'P' or into 'N' once or twice and she'll turn right over. i suspect it would be an electrical contact down there..... i read in the service manual to check the inhibitor switch or gear selector linkage. however, i don't have any experience with automatics. good advice is always appreciated. thanks !!

A little back story is in order here, I think. First of all, I work for my grandpa, who is a fairly well known rental shop owner, so basically all of the construction workers know him. A little down the street is the local NAPA store and machine shop, where Dan, a friend of my grandpa's works as the machinist. Dan says that he's going to cut me deals and all that, because I work for my grandpa, he can give it to me at wholesale prices for parts. What worries me is the labor though... So, I have a '74 260Z with a shot motor, hasn't been run in 10 years according to the previous owner. I opt for a ZXT swap and get lucky on craigslist with an '83 F54/P90a combo @ $180. It wa…

The crank pulley on our 78 280Z is wobbling. Everything was fine but today when the kid drove it home, it was making a clanging sound. I was able to see why very quickly. The front pulley is good but the rear that is closest to the block is the one that is wobbling. Ideas and fixes?

I took apart the bottom and used plastigage to check oil clearances, and the main bearings were all within spec and one was just at the loose end of spec (according to the rebuild your datsun engine book). The journal bearings were all identical and within spec. I took some pics and if anyone has any input or comments, id like to hear.
