So I took the head off of my 73 expecting to find a blown head gasket, or a crack in the head, which would explain the coolant in the head, and coming out of the exahust, when I got the car running a few weeks ago. And I found....nothing. The head gasket looked great, no blow-by that I could see. The cylinder head, at least what I could see (I haven't pulled the vales yet) looked great. No evidence of any cracks. The block looked great. However, I have the old wooden block holding my timing chain at TDC, so I can't see much of the piston walls. I straight edged the block and head, both seem very flat. I have to decide now whether to lose the timing chain block, and…

If someone made a head like OS Giken used to what would you be willing to pay? Yes, it's a hypothetical question and the performance gains are disproportionate to the money spent vs other ways BUT it is something to brag about. What would it be worth and would you want a N/A head or one designed for forced induction? Any special features you'd like to see on such a head? I imagine many people would hop on it if were between $1500-$3000,00 for a bare head. By bare head I mean a casting minus valvetrain having seats and guides installed. It would utilize the stock rockers which would not be included. (All major machining operations completed) Herringbone gears for the ca…

I am wondering if the ugly silver asbestos wrapped around my fuel lines as pictured is really necessary? I have been told by some that it is not needed and I'd like to get rid of it. If you look at the 2nd picture I've attached of a pristine engine it is not there. Then again, why would it be there in the first place if there wasnt a reason? I've searched the threads and cant find any discussion on this. Thoughts?

i'm thinking of lowering, leaning and locating the engine further back. i'm sure this is not a unique idea. how far over will it lean without oil flow issues? i should be able to figure out the other two issues but if you have input on that too, i'm all ears.

I finally got my lower end rebuilt! I decided to take the plunge and spend the money to get it done. The engine was a little worse off than I thought, it needed to have another crank installed because it was worn and the harmonic balancer messed up the woodruff key notches, and I needed to have the block bored. I ended up having them bore it .020 over, resize my rods, install another crank with oversize bearings, put in new freeze plugs, and pretty much put the lower end together. They ordered me a master rebuild kit with ITM pistons, a new oil pump, all gaskets, valve seals, new timing set, and pretty much the whole kit and caboodle. The lower end is set up and rea…

I'm no longer using SU carbs because I replaced them with Triple Mikuni's. My Mikuni's have three separate filters. Because of this swap, I now need to find a solution to cover the tube coming out of the engine (just below the carbs). From what I understand, this tube is responsible for routing engine crank fumes/gasses back into the carbs for emission purposes. I also have the same problem for the tube coming out of valve cover, but, I know there is a K&N solution for that part. Does anyone have good ideas about how I can deal with the one for the engine crank? If you have pictures or ideas, it would help me out a lot !! Thanks! -- Mike

Ok, I searched the forums but was unable to find any reference to the correct part number for the oil filter on an L series engine. I had originally installed a Fram PH8A filter, because it fit and is the largest size of filter. I am only about 200 miles into the break-in period, but I changed the oil today because for the first tank of gas or so I had the front choke badly mis-adjusted, and the choke cables were twisted at an angle that caused them to bind on the air cleaner. The net effect was that I drove the car about 40 miles with the chokes stuck full on, and another 30 miles with the front carb way too rich. (It fouled the plugs up to the point that the car would …

I have an extra e88 intake manifold that has two broken water jacket plugs. It came off of an old parts car - I was going to sell it on EBay but not in that condition. The plugs look like mini-freeze plugs and are on the underside directly beneath the carb (the front one in this case). Anybody know where I can get replacements? thank you in advance...
