I've decided to rebuild the motor in my 73 240Z even though it has very low miles, and I'm just looking to build a nice, quick (but not a race car), mostly original, and (hopefully) very reliable 240. I'm gonna do the rebuild myself. I've rebuilt motors before, but this will be my first overhead cam motor. Previous experience was with American muscle cars. I bought a set of round tops on eBay, and put the original flat tops and the smog stuff in storage. I'm just looking for a slight bump in performance (nothing extreme like a cam), and it seems like 2.5" exhaust, electronic ignition and a good carb rebuild should get me there. I've only been on this site since I bought…

I have a 73 240Z, and I am debating about swapping my stock engine for a twin turbo 300zx engine or a chevy 350. I like the idea of the twin turbo better, but the 350 is hard to beat as well. What are some of the pros and cons of both engines for the 240z. Has anyone done a similar conversion before? Brad

I found the following while searching for a way to identify the 3 switches on my transmission. http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3158&highlight=transmission+switches But I still need help. A picture is posted. I believe the most forward switch is the reverse light. I pulled the transmission out of a donor car and all three switches had the wires broken off of them. I've soldered wires for the forward switch. The mounting bracket you see is the rear bracket. Any help identifying the other two switches & confirming that the most forward switch is for the reverse light would be appreciated.

I have a 72 240z that I'm redoing and after getting feedback on the carb forum, I'm going to stay with the Stock SU's. As I redoing the car, I'd like to get a little more performance out of it, but do not want to negatively impact reliability as this will be a daily driver. I was thinking mild cam and headers, but haven't seen much on mods and what results to expect. For a daily driver, could I get 175 horse out of the 2.4 with these mods or more? I appreciate your input!

Having switched a turbo into my '72 I also put into the dash an after market boost guage. I am getting a reading of 4 off the guage while heavy acceleration. About to add a manual boost controller to get the boost up to about 8-9. Can I really trust the guage to give me an accurate reading throgh the small vac tube attached from the guage to the engine? Seems I will be putting alot of trust in a 50 cent piece of tubing. Thanks

i ran across an ad on craigslist for a 280 parts car (no title). so for a very good price i'm thinking about snagging it for the tranny. i don't know what year it is though so my questions are these: 1) did all 280s come with a 5 speed? 2) were all 280s FI? if so, would this FI system be better (i.e. more reliable/less expensive) than the arizona Z 4-bbl intake and a 390cfm holley?

I will be removing a perfectly working 2.4 out of a 71Z and replacing it with a 3.1. I want to sell the engine, my idea is to leave in the car until it is sold, that way the buyer can drive it and hear it run. I plan to sell it minus the carbs and header. The engine runs great, very strong and fast. So how much does anyone here think I should ask for it? Of course you can PM me if you are interested. I will list it here in the classifieds and on Craig's List San Diego. I just did not know how much to ask for it.

Bro can't find his '71 Z manual so I don't know what's what under the hood. Anywhere I can find this stuff? I see something suspect coming off the battery and into the front of the Z to the Passenger side under the dashboard... multiple wires. No idea what that is. Thanks tons for any help. This might help a little: http://asta.bizhosting.com/240Z-WhatsThis.htm :surprised Asta

I finally threw a timing light on my 240 this weekend and discovered timing was set at 0* initial. I checked my reference manual, an old Haynes, and it listed 17* for an L24 without emissions equipment, and 10* for cars with, depending on dist part number. I checked my dist, and found that I have a factory reman that doesn't match up with any given numbers. I set the initial at 10*, which gave me a total of about 35* with centrifugal, and 43* total with vacuum. Is this appropriate with a bone stock engine, or should I be looking for more? Devin

Got to get my clutch done, starting to slip noticably in third. There are many types available and most claim to be OEM spec. A broad range of prices as well - don't want to throw away money, but would like to know I got a good product. I would appreciate a recommendation from experience on a brand - if there is a difference in the available products. :paranoid:

I found a 1984 nissan pickup 2wd, does this have a R180 3.9 or 4.11 in it? I know I found some information on which cars had these diffs (but I cant find it again) and I remember mostly 4x4's. Can anyone give me a list of what cars to find these R180s in? Thanks.

So, I've finally decided to get my engine in my Z rebuilt. I've decided not to use the numbers matching block, but instead a block that I got for free from ebay. The block has a higher number stamped into it than my Z's original motor does. My Z was built in 8/72, so I'm assuming that the block I have now is probably a late 72/73. I'm looking to buy some rod bolts from ARP, but I'm unsure if they are 8mm or 9mm bolts. Anyone able to shed some light on the subject?
