In my 240z, it has the 4-Speed manual and I am going to keep it that way. Would a short throw shifter be worth it for this vehicle and tranny?

I have had the cam that came with the car profiled and it as below. The head shop has worked the head also. So far I have. E88 head Compression is 9.5:1 Inlet valves are 44mm Exhaust valves are 35mm A bit of porting only in the chamber to match them. No unshrouding done. Cam spec is 236@50 0.465 lift. 108 degree separation and tappits are .010 That's all the info on the cam that I have. Based on info I have read, this seems like a mild cam at best. Am I right? Engine size is 2.5 running triple 44PHH's. I wonder if I am wasting my time with rebuilding the triples when the SU's would be OK. Your thoughts please.

Eventually I would like to rebuild the stock L28 motor on my 78. There are some performance mods I would like to consider like a lighter flywheel, cams, maybe a bigger throtttle, headers, etc. However, I am trying to stay away from anything like throwing in a turbo, nitrous, or swapping out for a V8. Mind you, all those are exciting mods, but they are just not for me. My attempt is to get the most power out of that staight-six without going over the top. I am asking 4 things: 1. What upgrades are recommended from you guys? 2. Is it possible to get the car in the 5 second range (0-60) by doing it this way? 3. What is the calculated top speed? 4. What's the most horsepowe…

Ok, I was finally able to remove my drive-shaft and replace the real oil seal in my 4 speed. No more leak I also spent some time on pressure washing the underside with engine degreaser to try and track down my oil leak. Well I have now determined that I have what looks like a leak from my head gasket The leak begins behind the intake and exhaust manifold and runs down the side of the block to drip on the floor of the garage. I also may have a leak in my oil pan gasket but not sure still checking. I am about to start pulling the top off my engine but wanted to ask a quick question. If you remember from my previous posts I am having an issue with backfiring, black sm…

Does anyone know of a better, perhaps less expensive source for OEM bolts, nuts & washers to connect the halfshafts to the rear diff & hubs? This is a often seen auction on eBay... ...set of new genuine NOS datsun hardware for 1970-1978 datsun 240z,260z,280z.Also 1979-1983 datsun 280zx.These are the bolts, nuts, washers that attach the halfshafts to the rear differential. This is enough for 2 axles. $22.99. I would need two kits to bolt to the diff and the wheels. Thanks in advance.

Have any of you rebuilt and L24 that was in generally good condition (i.e., not smoking, decent compression)? How much better did the engine run after doing any overhaul. By overhaul I mean boring the engine, new pistons, bearings, head work, etc.... Do these engines usually need some kind of balancing work and blueprinting?

It seems that after about 15 min my a/c just completly dies out. I let the car rest and when i turn it back on the a/c blows cold. I thought maybe it could be a loose wire. Any ideas on what else it could be??

Ok for those who do not know I purchased a 1977 280Z that had been sitting for 4+ years. The car fired right up with a new battery so I had it towed to my house to begin what I thought was going to be a simple refresh-update to become a daily driver. I paid way too much for the car but they are so hard to find and the body was in such good condition I impulsively gave the PO 3 grand for it. (he saw me coming and stuck me hard) I have put another $500 into it. I drained the tank installed new filters, wire's, plugs, alternator, battery, vol regulator and front and rear brakes (new calipers and wheel cylinders). I have been working on a EFI issue (blows black smoke every no…

I had a little scare today working on Jim Derks car. Jim has never seen his car run and the car hasn't been registered in almost 20 years. The car needs lots of work but a very SOLID car. Of course Jim and i want to see it run first and foremost and that is what I am concentrating on. I took out the gas tank and cleaned it and amazingly it is in excellent shape. I pulled the exhaust and intake off to get at the exhaust manifold collector bolts. I am full steam ahead on getting this car running again and it dawns on me, I should do a compression test. We know nothing about this motor except it has 85k original miles. So i break out my handy compression tester and first…

Hey, I tried to set my timing the other day and I couldn't find the timing mark. So I stopped the eng and found 5(I think) tick marks on the lower pulley. One was more prominent than the rest so I painted that one. then proceded to set the timing with the engine running and the mark was still not visable. I checked the other side of the pulley with the timing light and there it was. Almost 180* off. Is the pulley able to be set on this way? My timing tab is on the left hand side of engine and the mark was on the right side. Please help me get my timing set! thanks!

I bought a '71 240Z parts car with a 280Z engine (P79 Head/F54 Block) along with a 5 speed. It would be an even better bargain if the diff turns out to be an R200. I can't determine what the differential is though and was hoping someone with a better eye and/or more experience might be able to identify it by pics. I've looked at the following info/links but still can't figure it out: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Garage/6212/diffswap/diffswap.htm http://zhome.com/rnt/L28conversion/Diff.jpg http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9031&highlight=differentials More pics of the parts car and my R180 are located at: http://s86.photobucket.com/alb…

My '71 Z leaks fluid out of the speedo cable when parked on the hoist. It sets up in the front. A pool of synthetic oil is always on the floor. When I park her on the level, no leak. Here is what I have done. I have replaced the "0" ring on the speedo gear housing. I have replaced the cable seal on the inside of the gear housing. I have changed the gasket on the speedo cable housing (that screws onto the tranny). It still leaks! Anyone have any ideas about where this fluid is coming from? It leaks down the outside of the cable and drips at the low point in the tunnel. There are NO other leaks in the tranny. I have replaced every seal and gasket in the speedo unit. What t…
