or should I replace it. The grooves aren't real deep, but there are plenty of them, and the "how to rebuild your nissan/datsun ohc engine' book says 'If your fingernail goes bumpety bump, better get a new pump'

From a quick search of the forums I believe my 5 speed is an early model from a 280Z, not a 280ZX. I just pulled the L24 and tranny from my abandoned project so I can use the 5 speed in my new project on my newly rebuilt L28 F54. This was my first engine pull by myself or with anyone else for that matter. Next I have to pull the L24 (stripped block) from my "new" 70 240Z so I can repair the battery box area and do other work (paint, etc.) before everything goes back together. I've included a couple photos of the tranny to see if I am right in my belief on the 5 speed. Also, I broke what I believe is the plastic breather tube on the transmission, how hard is it to get the …

Jumped all over a splash pan I saw on eBay the other night. Looks to be in really good shape. (I.E. - No major dings, Major rust...etc...etc) Should clean up quite nicely via media blasting....Powder coat that puppy gloss black or silver...Yee Haw webdawg1

Couple quick questions. I've done searches for both, but came up short of an answer to my questions after much reading. 1.) My old 240Z has only two studs for the mechanical fuel pump on the E88 gead. My three spare heads all only have two studs (even though all are threaded for three studs). My rebuilt P90 has the hole for the mech. pump, but of course no studs due to it being for the fuel injected application in its previous 280ZX configuration. I read in my 1970 FSM under fuel pump removal to "unscrew the three mounting bolts...." I have extra studs I can take off the other heads so my guess is I need to add another to the P90. 2.) This may sound silly, but is there a…

Is it possible to change the back up lamp-switch on the transmission case, on an 280 ZXT from 83, without removing the case ? My Hayns manual is not referring to the last models with the newer transmission. It seems that the switch is somewhere on top of the case where you can't see it.

For those who may be suffering the same affliction: I took all the advice given, and through process of elimination I found that the fuel pump is in-fact bad. I unplugged the two wires that run to the pump found behind the passenger side seat, connected a volt meter (red to green / black to black), had the wife turn the motor and watched for electrical activity. Sure enough there is juice going to the pump , plugged the wires back together, got underneath the car and put my hand on the pump and my ear right next to it, instructed the wife to turn the motor again............................................ nothing, absolutely dead::disappoin . When the new pump (fro…

I was looking for a fuel pump in the Summer 2006 edition of the Black Dragon (Victoria British?) Z catalog. The catalog indicates that the '70 240Z has two fuel pumps, an electric by the gas tank and a mechanical in the engine compartment. I'm pretty dang sure this isn't correct. Is it? :stupid:

Hi all, For those of you that may remember, I had some starting issues at the beginning of the summer. We had a really crappy summer up here in New England and I haven't had much time to work on the car at all. Now that fall is approaching I'm trying to get the car started before the cold months really settle in. Turns out the injectors weren’t getting any fuel, I squirted starting fluid into the air cleaner and "voila" she started. I can't hear the electric fuel pump come on when the key is in the "on" position before I turn it further to the "start" position. here's the question: am I supposed to hear the fuel pump click on before the car starts or does it come on on…

I was looking over a Z this weekend for a possible purchase (It's currently on ebay) and noticed something I thought was a little different. The front of the differential was not resting on a pad. Instead there was a metal (probably aluminum) bracket bolted in its place. It was like a goal post with two uprights that bolted into the differential on each side on onto the cross bracket. The differential and cross member are bolted together through this bracket as one unit with no cushion between. The owner said he thought the previous owner may have raced the car. Was this a racing trick? What would it do? The current owner said he got a lot of road noise through the car an…

I was driving back home from visiting my parents when suddenly a lot of noise started coming from the engine bay. Sounded like something major had broken. So I came to a stop and turn off the engine. Got out the mini-Maglite and looked under the hood. Couldn't see anything obvious so I started the engine up, and sure enough it was still noisy. So I took a second look around and it was not coming from the valve area or block. Finally as I was mildly revving the engine I saw what was like a blue torch flame coming out of the exhaust manifold. One of the plugs used to replace the air injection tube had blown out. Imagine having a blue flame shooting right out of the …

My engine idles fine when started and for a short while after that, then after the engine warms up, it refuses to idle less than 2k. I think it's a bad EGR valve and so I'm going to replace that soon, but I heard from someone else that it could be a leak in the rubber tube from the filter to the AFM (which has a sensor, of course). This doesn't quite make sense to me, does it make sense to anyone else? The rubber thingy is old and almost definitely leaks - I would think the only bad thing is that portion of the air is not filtered. Are there any other effects? Cheers!

I have acquired a few different types of heads and would like to know what motors they are off of, which are considered better and which work best on my cars. I have 4 all with L28 motors. A 73 with flat top pistons, SU's on a N42 with a header system. A 74 with flat top pistons, SU's on a N42 with a header system. A 75 with flat top pistons, fuel injection on what I feel was a poorly ported and polished N42 (could never get rid of the ping) balanced motor, lightened flywheel and a header system. A 77 assume stock pistons, fuel injection on a round port exhaust head with stock header. I have 2 E31 heads, 2 P90 heads and 3 N42 heads beside whats on the motors now. I was to…
