While under the rear end of the Z, I noticed alot of grease and oil on the pumpkin. I could not tell exactly where this oil/grease was coming from due to the accumulation of grease/oil. I looked at where the half shafts/rear end are coupled, but it does not appear that the problem came from this area. So I deceided that I would replace the cover gasket. I removed the drain and fill plugs and noticed a thin film of silicone on the back of the plugs.??? Next I pulled the cover. There was a thin film of silicone on the housing itself. As I looked into the housing I viewed some letters that looked like they were hand painted onto the gears with what appeared to me to b…

I need to replace the hoses that connect the injectors to the fuel rail in my 77 Z, so I pulled out the trusty FSM for a few pointers. The FSM method to remove the hose from the tail piece of the injector is to use a soldering iron to make a 3/4" (ok, officially .787") long slit, then pull the hose off the injector. Has anyone done this before? Any other ideas? Thanks, Bob

Ok so after all I have to rebuild my engine and head.:ninja: But my question is has anybody ever found oversized stock pistons, because I would like to do what ever I can to not bore my head 10 or 20 over. Yes it would give me more power but for once this is where I draw the line for extra power. So if anybody could help it would be appreciated. Thx Ian

Hi I have a 76 280z, I had problems with my previous engine where there was a crack in the cylinder head or maybe the block. Anyway I got a rebuild engine and installed it however it did not come with the flywheel and clutch so I pulled the flywheel off the previous engine and put it on the rebuilt along with a new clutch. Now everything is all together and tight, I try starting it and it struggles to start like the battery is low, but tis is a brand new battery, I checked the wires(pos. and neg.) to the starter and there good, it seens like its machanical not electrical. I even tried another battery and it did the same thing. The engine was running before I bought it, th…

So I adjusted the valves the other day and now they're really loud(clack, clack), figure I have too much play from this old head and probably need to tighten it up w/ new lash pads. I also know I need new stem seals, seats and guides because they're originals. Now to my question...I'm looking to buy a rebuilt head so I can swap it because I don't have alot of time for a machine shop. So I was thinking about either the E88 or a N42. I have the orig. L24 which still has great compression, so I figure the bottom end can still go a while longer. Has anyone ever used a N42 on a L24? I know the E88 is a bolt on replacement, but I'm looking for a little more performance an…

I've seen these euro balance tubes before but this one is different. What is the "OXS" mean that's stamped on the side? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-240Z-Euro-Balance-Tube-RARE-Brand-New-NOS_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38634QQihZ017QQitemZ270003255999QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW Thanks. Jim

Hey guys, Am currently putting the Z back together as it needs to be moved again. Its been sitting for almost 3 years in the garage. Upon leaving, I didnt prep it for storage as I didnt plan on being away for so long.... Yep poor form. Anyhow, I read up on post storage procedures, and came to turing the engine over by hand. When I have no spark plugs in, it turns over just fine, using the socket wrench. When I put the plugs back in, I am getting major resistance at certain intervals/spots! It doesnt feel like a mechanical/hard resistance as it gradually gets tighter throught the rotation, then easier again. These point/s have also prooven too much for the starter.!!…

Is it possible to have the L28's cylinders sleeved to compensate for excessive wear/boring? I understand this is regular fare for diesels, but the gas engines?

My stick is super hot, I mean like burn yourslef on it hot. I was worried about trans problems, so I took it to a shop and had the fluid in the tranny (78 5 spd) changed and I had them add an engine additive that I like to use. It cooled the stick off some, but it is still super hot. I pulled the tunnel cover off, and discovered that the rubber boot cover is all but gone, so there is a ton of hot air coming in there, but I don't think it should get this hot. I have no shifting issues, no unusual noises, but the stick is really hot. I know that the tunnel will get hot, but this seems excessive. It has been almost 17 years since I had a Z, so maybe I am just forgetting tha…
