We put on the early electron ignition system. We got it all wired and tried to start it and get it timed. It would barely run. I changed the dist drive (adv & ret) and nothing would make it run. We decided the ECU was bad so we borrowed one from Datsun guy. It still had the wiring harness on it. BINGO! I had the red and the green wires mixed up. I used a drawing for the set-up that had a ECU with a plug-in. The red wire was 'stacked' above the green wire. I assumed the red wire was last. My ECU had the screw-in connectors. Once I changed the wires around the old Z fired right up. I am very close to declaring the restoration complete. I need to install the blue rivots …

Hello there. I am wanting to know about the gearbox known as the FS5C71A. I know it was introduced in the Roadster 2000, in about 1967. It known to have a 3 piece case with a stright stick. It had a variant, same numbers except the C was a W (FS5W71A) which had the weaker warner style brass syncros (instead of servo style steel syncros). I thought this box would be rare, but I believe it was original equipment on the 1969-1971 240Z as well? This is where I need confirmation from a "Z head" as you like to refer to yourselves!!! Is it true? I also heard that the 1972-1976 240Z had the next evolution, the FS5C71B which differed in that it had a 2 piece case and a bent stick.…

Hi Guys, we have a weird problem here, we have a 72 240z in that has a lot of old school modifications, Racer Brown cam, stock exhaust manifold, huge exhaust pipe and Corvair muffler, dual stock appearing su's. Timing and distributor seem ok. We have just finished the full body resto, and are sorting out the mechanicals and have run into this. Car sat for years..34k right original one owner miles, but hes dead. Car had a AC brand electric fuel pump mounted by the gas tank, it was hooked up to a switch on console, stock manual fuel pump on block. We took it off when we replaced the fuel filler tube and changed the gas tank which was kinda rusty on the small metal line…

Yesterday I mentioned on another thread that my mechanic had found some damage to my chain guide and problems with the chain(on the 71 Z). I went over to examine it and can confirm the chain was real loose on the side that should be tight. (the drivers side) The top lip of the guide was gone too? (down into the front of the engine or oil pan???) Anyway the car has been running ok. When I went home I pulled the valve cover off my 79 ZX to compare the chain tension. It was definitely tighter. OK, so the question is: Is this something we could solve with the method shown in the Z therapy vid where Scott moves the chain to different sprocket holes? Or should I just get a n…

if anyones wanting to change their auto to manual, i ve just finished mine "76 260 z,we fitted a 240k,fs5w71b,5 speed, ratios are,3.321,2.077,1.308,1.000,0.864,,r3.382,the clutch pedal was no prob,i just got a brake pedal off another auto z,it just needed one hole drilled in it, for the master cyl fork pin, otherwise the pedal just bolted straight in. the hole in the floor needed a bit cut out and the gear lever i sourced needed a bit of bending, the auto was very tired and did 0-100klm/hr in 13.5 secs.the manual has dropped that to about 8.5 secs,a new clutch would see that drop to 8 i think, but my budget is very low so ill just nurse it and enjoy.

My mecahinic says my timing chain guide is all chewed up. I havenet seen the damage yet, but will drive over there today. He said there IS likely debRIS from the guide down in the front of the engine as well and recomends a new timing kit. Any ideas what would cause this other than it being old? Are there any timing kit brands to avoid? i can get a beck arnely KIT at a good price. Also what about head gaskets? any bad choices for brands? The price quotes I got from the Nissan dealer here for the kit and gasket were totally out of line. like 70 bucks for a gasket???? couple hundred for most of the parts:mad: in the kit???

Can you get those metric hex bolts with the phillips slot anywhere? The only thing I can get easily is zinc-plated hex head head machine screws. Those look nice, but aren't the original style, and the original ones rust easily. thx

Hi fellow Z enthusiasts, Does anyone know the valve seat angles for the P90 head? I was curious to know if they have a three angle grind from factory as there appears to be three different angles on the valves/valve seats out of my P90. I tried to find information regarding the valves in the P90 but I had no luck. The Haynes manual only has the listing for the L24 and L26, no L28.... Are there a specific angles I should aim for (turbo application)? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Marc.

I am getting a "buzzing " noise from the shifter of my 79 ZX. I know I'm probably getting close to needing tranny work with 179K on the clock. BUT, I wonder what specifically this might be. Bearings? Synchros? The noise occurs when gears are engaed. It is the original early 5 speed. I have had a whirring noise like a throw out bearing when I engage the clutch out of gear for some time. Not super loud though. Anyway I recall and article in the Q and A section of road and track back in the 90's where the editor mentioned a problem with the early 5 speeds that could be cured with a simple tightening of a bolt. Anyone recall what this could be???

Here is my question. After many years of no lead, what is the consensus now on the need to use a lead substiture in the fuel for my 72 original engine? Was all the scare about needing lead for seat lubrication correct? I did an additive for a number of years but have gotten away from it lately. Any hard facts? experiences? What say you? AND why.
