I currently own a '79 280zx that's in pretty good condition w/ no mods as of yet. Right now I have it parked because I am doing some minor work on it, since I don't drive it in the winter. I was wondering if anybody has some advice or tips on getting more power out the stock engine. Success stories perhaps? I was originally considering doing an engine swap, but after doing some research on it I feel that it would be too much work and time consuming. I would appreciate any feedback.

Hey, everyone, just took a break for breakfast. It's noon and I've taken off the heat sheild and sprayed all the studs with penetrating oil. Hopefully the process goes well, but we'll find out! Tad bit of surface rust left on parts of the header (found it at junkyard totally thrashed, sanded it and painted it myself w/ header paint). I think the rust mught be the worst part of all this. Wish me luck, I've got a week till I have to go back to work and my girlfriend's birthday's next week, so I've gotta get this done, hehe. BTW, anyone run their car with an open header? Wouldn't the hot gas melt or ignite the undercoating? Just wondering.

Want to verify something as I prepare for the auto to manual tranny swap. Here's the question - the car, clutch and transmission are '71 vintage, the engine is '83 and the flywheel will be something like a '77 or so. I see numerous flywheel bolt choices, can I assume I need bolts to match the flywheel ('77 or so)? Or the engine ('83)? To me, matching the flywheel seems most logical.

I am starting a swap of an '83 ZX motor into my '73. Does anybody know what the bolt size is for the main pulley. My largest socket is 24 mm and that isn't it. I need to buy a bigger one, so I'd like to just get the one I need. TIA, Marty

The drive shaft u joints have been replaced and I still have a perceptible vibration over 50 MPH. Could it be possible that the drive shaft need to be rebalance?

I picked up an 82 280zxt (with 201300 miles on the OD) the other week. The F54/P90a engine supposedly had no compression on cylinder 5. Someone had pulled the valve cover, water pump, oil pump, etc. for reasons I'm not sure about. I pulled the engine yesterday and removed the head expecting to find a burnt valve, blown head gasket or damaged piston/rings. Nada...nothing wrong. There's lots of oil every where and the plugs were heavily fouled. The block has no ring ridge and crosschecking is still evident in the bores. One of the torque convertor bolts was lightly damaged. I'm convinced this is a relatively recent rebuild. All of that said, I am wondering if this is an ove…

Just a note to say that I have an L28et with the P90a is a solid lifter configuration. It has been said that these didn't exist or only came from the Japanese market. I don't yet know if I'll hold on to it, sell it complete, break it for parts or move the head and turbo over to my triple Dellorto L24...decisions...decisions. I'm breaking down the whole car so if anyone needs a particular part let me know. I'll be posting bits to eBay shortly.

Hello Everyone... Can someone tell me if the following problem is a syncho problem, or is the driver (Me) being an idiot I have a 71 'Z', with a transplanted 5spthat the PO installed... As I drive the car I have no problems up shifting 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd, and so on... as I slow down, and down shift 4th to 3rd.. no problems, and as I come to say a stop sign, or make a turn and down shift from 3rd to 2nd so i don't lug the engine... I have a hard time getting the transmission into gear. I am double clutching, but it seems that it's a hit or miss deal as to if the shifter will go into gear. I think I notice that weather the shifter will go into gear or not depends …

So I'm looking for a rebuilder motor for my 280Z. I found one from 79ZX for $150. The guy says it was pulled in 89 and ran fine at the time. It had 145 PSI in each cylinder. It has the exhaust and intake manifolds as well as all the fuel rails. It was kept indoors. What do you guys think? Is this engine going to be as powerful as my 77 engine. It has the same N42 head. What kind of power would this put out? I know the ZX was supposed to be weaker, but from what I found, they group the 75-80 engines together as the same motor. Thanks guys.

Ive done a bit of a search and a few have touched on this but id like more ideas. I understand that with a LD28 cranl/l24 rods, there are pistons the can be made to fit- with fly cutting etc. But im more interested in keeping the std l28 crank and rods and just using 120thou flattop oversize pistons- without having to get them made up custom(too much $$$). Anyone know of any other piston combo that would work.? thanks
