I just bought a timing light from Sears. It is the inductive pickup with the advance dial. I painted the notch on the pulley. What number (degrees) am I trying to line this up with on the timing scale for a 75 280Z. The manual says 7 degrees BTDC. That was new with no miles. The engine now has 150k plus. Also, am I supposed to dial in the desired number of degrees on my timing gun to match what I want on the timing scale before I adjust the distributor? Or do I leave the gun set at zero? The car runs, idles, and revs strong while parked but has no power when I drive it and it backfires through the AFM when I try to accelerate along with hesitation and choppy idle like a B…

TWM lists two air horns for the Japanese SU. 1 3/4" with 44 mm Air Entry 2700-4450 44 50 88 FR 1 3/4" with 48 mm Air Entry 2700-4850 48 50 88 FR Which should I buy to pair with a pair of ITG air cleaners? MSA sells some too but I have heard they are smaller than stock air horns. I believe the MSA ones are by TWM as well. http://www.twminduction.com/AirHorn/AirHorn-FR.html

There are probably a bunch of these out there already but I worked this one out to answer some of my own questions. Should be easy enough to modify if you are using different transmission ratios or want to try a different rear end ratio, just plug in the numbers. Enter in the revs per mile for the tire you are using and the rest is figured. I got the revs info from the data provided at tirerack.com for the tires I am interested in using. The trans ratios I got from zgarage.com. I may have screwed up big time with the caculations but the numbers look right, if you find I made a mistake let me know and I'll fix it Edit: OK, latest and greatest posted, added some shift…

I put an 81 5 speed in my 240 with 3.36 gears, needless to say my low end just isn't what it used to be. I drove the ZX with 3.90 gears and they were too low for my driving/liking. I've got a 3.54 rear and have been thinking of putting it in, but is it worth the trouble? Will it give me the zip of the old 4 speed first gear or will I have to go to a 3.70 or 3.90 and put up with the high rpm cruise?

Hello all. I have a 1976 datsun 280z im restoring and hopefully makin a race car out of. I came across a 300zx twin turbo engine in the junk yard today that looked to be nice. It only has 100k miles on it i suppose. Its missing the distributor. I dont know a price on it yet but if i were to buy it i would probably buy the whole car so i could use what i need off it for the swap. Anyways i was wondering if this swap was worth it or should i just go with a v8. im looking for more of a high end, quick light car, not a big muscley tank that doesnt turn. Is it to much effort? will i be able to mount it properly? will the drivetrain fit? I have a later model 5 spd i believe,…

Hey, I got a 1980 280ZX about 5 years ago, and when I first got it, the transmission broke, so i took it to Aamco(mistake number 1) and they fixed it, and about 4 years later it broke again... Whats happening is that when I drive it a little bit hard or if I drive it normal for about 3 weeks, I will turn the car off, leaving it in first gear. Then when I start the car, I put it in Reverse, but the transmission gets stuck on the first gear rail. So Reverse locks up the tranny, won't let me go anywhere, and stalls the car. From there on out, neutral is first gear. The only way to fix the problem it seems is to pull out the transmission, and as soon as the mechanics get it …

I have finished my tear down and have had my head surfaced. I am looking at the pistons and block here below the head, and it is nasty. all black with peices of the old head and a few deposits in some spots. What is safe to use to clean all this off? I don't want to get anything in the cylinders that mey damage them. This crap is on here tight, so I need to get it off with something before I get the head on. What should I use?

How far out should my vacuum advance canister move? I was told by a mechanic that my distributor needed some work, such as a worn distributor shaft, and I'm curious what all I need to do to the distributor to make the car run in tip top shape. I've been told by other Z aficionados that the vaccum advance canister can be a huge cause of problems, because they will seize up after a while. I attached a length of tube to the advance canister, and I sucked on the end of the tube, and the vacuum advance moved about 1 mm. and no more. How much should it move for it to be good? Also, what other parts are common to go out in the Z distributor?

i was doing a headgasket on my car and when i reassembled it, i had it timed way wrong, like 30-40 degrees retarded, problem is, i didn't catch it, and i went to try and start it, obviously didnt' start. so i retimed it and now it runs, but with a terrible top end noise, i'm thinking i just pulled a stupid mistake and just bent all the valves or at least some. i suppose everyone makes these type of idiot mistakes at least once. but info on the car, it's an L28 block with an E88 head with flat top P79 pistons and an unknown CWC cam...so either way, the head is coming back off to check for bent valves, but in the meantime...as i've never bent a valve before, what sort of no…
