Here's a new one to me: an engine power balance test. Has anyone else heard of this? This test was performed by the people who recently tuned and ajusted the carbs on my L24. When I questioned them more closely, they told me that the test is a truer assesment of the performance of each cyclinder than a straight compression test. Here's what they do: The engine is connected to electrical diagnostic equipment which allow the rpm to be accurately measured. With the engine warm and at idle, one plug lead at a time is disconected and the drop in rpm is measured as a % of the idle rpm. So, if my engine idles at 750rpm and the power balance test records a '10' when the cylind…

I got a 73 240z auto that I'm converting to a 5 spd. I got a flywheel from another 240z, don't remember year. The problem I'm having is the flywheel won't fit onto my 240z engine. I don't know the exact name of the part it bolts onto but i'llt ry to explain it best as I can. Coming out of the crankshaft, there's that round piece that sticks out a little and that the flywheel is suppose to fit into and bolts onto. Heres my problem, is the round piece that its suppose to bolt onto, is too big to fit the flywheel. Friend of mine called the MSA tech line and asked them about it. They said the crankshaft was different on some of the earlier cars and that the only thing I co…

So I've had my Z for about 9 months now and in that time I've concentrated on fixing the major problems (radiator, bent wheel, oil leaks, crappy interior...) but last week it was time for the engine to get some attention. I took it to my local auto-shop and asked them to check the carbs, ignition and compression... Well it looks like I got lucky. The owner of the workshop loves older cars and is a fan of SU carbs! He balanced the carbs (they were way out) and topped up the dashpot oil (empty on both). He adjusted the dwell and advance of the distributor (again way out). He checked the compression (185, 195, 190 190 190,195psi) for my L24 with E31 head which is excellent. …

What sort of compression would you want on a turbo motor to allow it to take less than optimal (say, 89 octane) pump gas? If you wanted to build a 3.1 stroker turbo, what choice of parts would you go for? Most of the 3.1 builds seem to have a fairly high (9.5+) compression ratio, which doesn't seem to be a good idea for a forced induction motor. I would definitly like to keep an L6 core in the car, and have toyed with the idea of building a 3.1, but they all seem to be normally aspirated. Why not go the full route, and drain every last bit out of the engine that is possible (without putting a bomb in the front of the car!)? I don't have any problem with Nissan parts fr…

Pulled this of my 70 240 this afternoon, any thoughts to it being a factory option, dealer installed, or plain old aftermarket job...its metal and attaches to the back side of radiator. I've searched and haven't found this question addressed. Thanks, David Spillman

i have an N47 L28 and i was wondering if anyone knows if i can port the exhaust to be square? i know it's going to be a lot of work, but i don't want to have to get headers for the N47 head (with round ports) and i don't want to have to go through the valve work with my E88 head. basically, i want to port match the head to a set of square port headers because the round port headers i found aren't as nice as the square port ones... anyway, thanks for the help!

Hi guys, I currently own a rust free 1971 240z Build No.#692? (RHD) which I bought a week ago with no gearbox or engine in sight. I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were in putting an RB20DET (nissan inline 6) back into the 240z... I sort of feel bad doing it to such an early build car but considering the engine bay was empty when I bought it, i don't feel so bad.. Thanks for any thoughts, Sean p.s. pics of the rb are in my gallery, will have the 240 loaded up once i get photos of it

We've all heard that the higher the compression in an engine the more HP you will have. I was wondering how this works. And also what is too high for a street car?
