I have a 1972 240Z that starts up and seems to run a little shakey.Took the plug wire off the number 1 cylinder and notice no difference in idle. Replaced coil, plugs, conds, wires, points, etc with no diff. Discovered oil pump and drive shaft were out of phase and not lined up properly by indication marks. Aligned then re-installed the oil pump shaft per service manual..car stiil running on 5 cylinders: cannot time engine with timimg light and have to advance to get it to idle smooth. I just fixed up a 280zx that sat for 10 years. it works beautifully! but the radiator needs to be replaced according to my mechanic. he also mentioned that these cars tend to overheat too much. Would a new radiator fix my overheating problem, or do I need something else? If I haven't explained enough to help you out, please mention so.

This is my first Z car and it's a 1976 280Z auto (aka Slow) with A/C. What kind of performance mods are out there for this car short of swapping the tranny? Just looking for a starting point that others have been too. This will be a street driven car only for the spring and summer months, so power and speed is the goal. Thanks Bill

I was adjusting my valves today for the first time (cold initially so I can get it down, then warm later). Adjusting the exhaust valves was easy. The problem I ran into was with the intake valves. On most(all except maybe 2) of them, the adjustment nut was already so close to the lock nut that even when I turned it in the correct direction until it would turn no more, the clearance was still too small by 4-6 thousanths. This head is original and still has the bronze(?) valve seats as far as I know. I've been told they get 'beaten' into the head after many miles, especially without leaded fuel, could this be related to my problem? On a related note, I ran a dry compression…

What modifs can one (inexpensively) do to improve the torque on a standard 280ZX engine ? BMW throttle body ? Has anyone tried using an LD crank to get 3 or 3.1 litres in a ZX ? If one touches anything, can the standard injection cope with increased demands ? If not, what are the alternatives ? I suspect it can't but can one replace the injection system with a more modern one ? Thanks ps Is it a real gain to replace the variable assistance re-circulating ball steering system with the rack and pinion one ?

if anyone would be willing to help me out, i just need someone with a 280z to pop off the black cover on the left side of the air flow meter and push the needle all the way over to full open and let me know where the silver needle (indicated by the red circle) sits. i have a picture there i made in paintbrush with numbers so you can use that or if you just want to copy my picture and put a dot to let me know where yours sits at. i would really appreciate anyone thats willing to help me out. thanks, aaron. afm.bmp

Hi, I am again, I have to live with Classic Z car, huh. Anyway, I am dificult finding corrent timing setting for my 240z has various mods: 1. the engine is L28 from 280zx with P-79 which proted and performance cam. 2. MSD ingition box with blaster coil with 8mm taylor wires. 3. '77 ignition and distributor(from privious owner's recipt) and 4. Motor sport header and 45 triple weber with cannon. The L28's timing is 8B-10B. How do such mods affect timing? It may be bit advance or retard? It might help my over heating issue too. ____________________________________ 240z rocks

Aloha, I'm new to Z-cars and have a couple of questions. What's the performance potential of the L24? I'm a basic mechanic and can do things like adding triple Webers, headers, exhaust and installing a hotter cam. Not big into engine swaps and forced induction. I like the sound of carbs at WOT. Also, did the 240Z come with 150bhp out of the box? A guy over on a Triumph forum stated that his tired old TR6 with 95bhp could easily dispatch equally tired-out 240Z's. Either my numbers are wrong or this guy is living in a dream world. Anyway, just really interested in 240Z's and would appreciate it if someone could point in the right direction so I can do some reading/rese…

Does anyone have any experience with nitrous in their Z? How much nitrous can a L24 engine take? I know these engines are strong and 6 cyl..so I would think pretty much. sorry.I didnt know to put this here or in modified z cars.

Hey Z (and Zed) people! I just Droped in a bitch'n L28, F54, 20 thou over bore, N42, Miled cam, new valve train, MSA headers 6-2-1, 2 1/2" exaust, with dynaflow muffler, electronic dizzy, and lets not forget about the awsome SU's! I rebuilt my SU's with SM needles and stock nozzels. I'v checked the float levels, and there good. My big question is, How should I set up my Carb? How many turns should I start with on the nozzels. Can I tune them just like I would if I were tuning them for my L24? I'm wondering if I can get any tips from any one that has My new set up? I don't want to run to "fat" or to "lean".
