I have a '73 240Z with the stock ignition system that I want to upgrade to electronic ignition. I've seen this discussion before, but still have a few questions that I'm hoping someone in the group can help answer. 1. What are the merits of going to a 280z distributor vs. adding a new pickup to my existing distributor? 2. Does anyone have experience with the MSD 6A and Crane XR3000 units? The MSD seems more popular, but the Crane comes with a kit to replace the points on my existing distributor, and is also cheaper. 3. How important is it to replace/upgrade the coil? 4. Should I expect any issues with my stock plug wires if I do all these upgrades? The rest of my engi…

Hey all. My '83 ZX's (I know, I know ) 5 speed tranny is beginning to show its age. The synchros are getting a little balky especially when its cold outside. As the tranny fluid has never been changed in the last 20 years (to the best of my knowledge) I'm thinking new fluid might be in order. Any thoughts on whether I should just use straight gear oil (40 weight if I remember correctly) or has anyone used some new wonder fluid that will help "renew" those tired synchros without damaging the tranny. Thanks, Peter

I am ready to order JE forged pistons for my F54 block that will be used for a turbo project. I planned to only bore it .040 over but is there any good reason not to bore it more? I have read posts about of weak stroker motors that have been bored to large and come apart too easy and don't want the same problem. I am using a P90 head with a schneider cam that has it best power between 3000 and 6500 RPM. Also I want to stay around 8 to 1 compression ratio and will be using a good engine management system. Can anyone provide me with an experienced opinion about how much the F54 can be safely bored? Thanks for your help..........mayolives.

Lately I've been running my 73 240 with roundtops as lean as I can to deal with some idle issues. One side effect is that applying the throttly gently, such as going around a corner slowly in 2nd gear, results in a jerky response from the engine. It's just not possible to accelerate gently and smoothly at the same time. So I was playing around with things and removed and plugged my vacuum advance. I also advanced my timing from about 8 degrees to 15 at idle. Interestingly, the jerkiness at part throttle is almost completely gone. And I find it pulls to 6k rpm just a little stronger as well (due to the extra advance, maybe?). So my question to the group is what am I g…

Been doing a bit of Z reading up lately (I am a Z anorak, I know ) on different performance upgrades that specialists have offered for our Z's. Stumbled on 1 company called Cartech in the US, apparently they offer/offered (not sure if they still do it) an L28 conversion which featured twin turbochargers feeding a plenum chamber that formed the airbox for three choke Mikuni Carbs. Anyone else heard of them?? Anyone else got this setup?? Anyone got any links with more info?? Power is reputed to be in the 350bhp region. Why haven't we all got this? Janspeed offered a conversion featuring a Roto-Master Turbo. Standard FI was retained with two extra fuel injectors added…

Guys, I'm slowly addressing all of the little problems on my Z and next on the list is the grimy, oily oil pump. Its obviously leaking or weeping from one of the gaskets/seals and needs attention. Are there any tricks to removing and replacing the oil pump? My Nissan workshop manual mentions that the Distributor must be removed first... I'd rather leave it alone if at all possible. Your thoughts? Hayden.
