http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=11830 I asked a similar question earlier, but didn't get an feedback and since then have learned more ... and still have questions. I am getting an 80 280z engine complete with the FI. My current plan is to put it into my 73 240 and run with my round top carbs. I have 2 main questions: 1) am I giving up any HP by using carbs vs. FI? 2) my existing engine (200+k on the bottom end and bad compression) has an E31 head with unknown mileage. The new engine's N47 head (and block) have about 80k miles. Which head should I use I've read that the N47's exhaust ports aren't the best shape and that the exhaust ma…

Just wondering what I should put on my L28 which is going in a 260z. I have the injection manifold and all the wiring etc, the only thing I have to do is fab up a surge tank and all the hoses etc. If I went to carbies I would have to buy a set as I dont have any at the moment. The L28 will be slightly warmed over (increased comp, mild cam, headers, exhaust) and Im not sure if the hassle of putting the FI on is worth it. My main concerns about the FI is that it will not be able to provide enough fuel (and at the moment Im not prepared to add extra injectors etc) and that it will be too much work to set it all up, but my main concern with the SU's is that it will chew way to…

first, i now know that the metal pipe comming off the block is a ventilation pipe so i installed a vavlve cover breather at the end of it. second, the pcv valve that is mounted to the vacume rail on top of the intake im not to sure about. i installed a t and ran the lines from the pcv to the air filter assemblies third, crankcase ventilation, was planning on installing similar brether as ussed on block ventilation does this all sound like a proper way to set this thing up? thanks, dan

Hi, I remember reading about the 1996 corvette LT1 motor getting some innovative improvements. One of which was reverse cooling. Instead of running the coolant into the engine block and then the heads and out, GM reversed flow and the coolant came to the heads first then the block. The main benefit was that it allowed them to bump compression to 10.4 to 1 for more power. Here is a link to some of the info: http://corvetteactioncenter.com/specs/1996/96technology.html Anyway, I am about to take an E-88 head that I had rebuilt (L-28 intake valves, hardened seats) back when I first fixed up my 240Z, and put it on a low miles F54 L-28 block with flat top pistons. I am goi…

When I take the valve cover off there is slack on tight side of cam chain. The reason I looked is the chain sounded very sloppy.(Rattling sound). When idling I have 445/290 cam/ isky springs. I didn't install new cam & chain because the showed little wear and lined up perfectly on #1 mark. Update.. It seems when I crank the engine by hand the chain goes slack during highest compression zone. It must be a normal condition when cranking by hand because my other high compression engine that I know runs well, does the same thing.

When my 260Z (with 240Z SU's) was last tuned it had a vacuum leak on the balance tube, so I'd say it was tuned around that problem. When I fixed that leak, it was running ritch as hell. Now, I've never tuned the SU's before but have read plenty about how to do it. Anyhow, as a quick fix I leaned both carbs off by half a turn which helped quite a bit. Still runs quite nicely other than hesitating a bit when cold (any ideas why?). Anyhow, I had another play with it today and found the the rear carbs mixture adjustment is two and a half turns on the ritch side of stoichometric. (I assume it will be the stoichometric mixture, where you will get the highest idle speed and l…

I have a L26 that i'm trying to get started. Problem is that i've ripped out all the dash and wiring, so i cant just turn a key. I got a remote starter, and can get it cranking. Petrols not a problem. I connected a wire from the +ve battery terminal to the +ve terminal on the coil, but i cant get it to fire. I've left the other wires from the coil to the distributer (points). I would have though that with power to the coil and the starter was all an engine needed to get it started and running. What should the negative coil terminal be wired to? Anything i missed? Its from a parts car. I want to work out what condition it is in. Looks like its had some work done to it. It …

Is somebody can tell me if the optional fan shroud on the 72 z was metal or plastic and if there is numbers stamped somewhere. I bought sometimes ago a used shroud that is supposed to fit this model and is all metal. Also, I am looking for a splash pan. Was it an option too or a standard item? Any help appreciated. Richard

Alright, getting a 280Z with EFI tomorrow, and I'm looking for some info about the EFI system. I know it's got the same bosch EFI as my 83 celica, but I'm wondering if nissan used a different AFM and such. Any info would be great .

More questions folks - In an effort to cool underbonnet temperatures, has anyone ever heat-coated their INTAKE MANIFOLD as well as their exhaust headers?? Is it possible to heatcoat the intake manifold, or is there some reason I should avoid it like the plague?? Seemed like a good idea to me to further cool my fuel flow and carbies. Cheers :classic:

Hi, Currently running a 77 L-28 with and E88 head. I just picked up a 83 280ZX F54 engine (Normally Aspirated with flat top pistons) and would like to use my E88 cyl head on it -- converting from the P79 and fuel injection back to the SU's for now. Looks like it will be a bump in Compression from about 8.3 to around 10:1. Anybody else out there done this combo? I'm about to buy gaskets and just want to make sure that there aren't any problems I am not aware of. Going programmable FI as the funds allow in the future, so no need to point out that going from FI to carbs is not a good idea. Garrett

I am going to try to start an l24 that has been in storage for 10 years. I have seen posts like this in the past but couldnt find it. What do I need to do to prep the engine to get it started safely. The engine ran very strong before it when into storage so I hope it will continue to do so after I get it going. Sorry if this has been asked before, but its always good to get advice from people who have failed/suceeded in the past doing what I am about to do. Thanks guys
