I'm restoring my dad's 1973 240z and since I'm doing the brake lines I might as well do the fuel and clutch lines. Here's my question. What is the difference between the 1972 fuel lines and the 1973 fuel lines. Buying a set it's a $200 difference, but when looking at clutch, return, and intake that adds up quick. The car has the round top carbs from 72. Can I run the 72' lines in the car or do I need to bite the bullet and get the lines for the 73? Car was manufactured in Sept. of 72.

The car: 1971 Datsun 240Z. Original motor, fresh rebuild (less than 2500 miles.) Original SU carbs freshly tuned, New spark plugs. MSD Hall Effect electronic ignition, Pertronics coil. Electric fans. Schneider Stage II cam and new springs. 6-2-1 headers with carb heat shields. 4 speed manual transmission. All smog components deleted. So, pardon the lengthy intro. Bought the car Jan of 2023. Fresh rebuild on the motor. Always smelled gas in the car, so after researching the forums, it seemed like fuel hoses were the place to start. Also I saw fuel dripping at the rear of the car. So I removed the fuel tank and all hoses and replaced said hoses because…

Hey Guys, Every time I post on this forum it's due to bad news:( I really need advice on this one though from some diff experts. Decided to find the top speed of my car the other day and around 90mph the car started screaming from the rear. Luckily only about 2 miles from home so I limped it back. I took note that the noise was only under acceleration, and sometimes a slight grinding noise would occur. Ok, so I jacked it up, put on stands, and ran it in gear. Heard noise was from the differential. Drained diff fluid. Only about a cup came out 😭. I had a shop swap in this diff and transfer inner stub axles about 3 years ago. Apparently, they decided checkin…

I really need to change out the gear oil in my 5 speed transmission and differential. From what i can make out in the owners manual the transmission takes GL-4 and differential GL-5. I cant make sense of what weight oil i should use.

A while back, I heard that the original distributer cap was grey. Going off of that and a poor quality picture on BAT, I was able to find a grey YEC branded cap, but didn't know if it was close to the correct color. Today, I found a picture of an original Hitachi distributor cap: Putting that here for reference for others.

Does anyone know of a shop rebuilding 5 speeds in the PNW? Close to Portland is preferred, but am willing to drive if there's someone who has a ton of specific experience with Datsun stuff. Thanks in advance!

Hi yall! First post here. I've been trying not to ask too many questions and research on my own before begging for help, but I can't seem to find this answer. Other posts where close but not quite. I'm rebuilding a '72 240Z (Feb). The car wasn't running when I bought it, so I'm nervous to rely on previous owner's status quo. The smog system was removed and the two hose spots I highlighted in red are were empty when I got the car. Parts manual calls it a "hose pipe connector." If I keep it open like previous owner had it, does that have long term effects on the engine? Like can gunk find its way inside? Do I install a hose just to cover them? Or block off totall…

Hey gang, On a '78 I'm told the cam is 'internally oiled' (instead of using the oil spray bar). What does that mean and are there holes somewhere on the cam that spray oil while rotating or something? I looked but didn't see any... -chase

I finally got a lead on a 5 speed, which has been sitting on the shelf since the mid 90's at a Sacramento manual trans business . Went to look at it, appeared to have a close ratio tail housing. Did a quick check of the 1st and 5th gear ratios by marking shafts and turning, not too accurate. Estimated 5th was .773, and first was 3.6, which I thought odd. They recently replaced the seals since it was sitting for so long, and came with 1 year warranty. They unfortunately painted it gray, ugggh. Anyway, decided to buy it. It looks like like a typical close ratio tail shaft housing, no dust shield, bottom speedo bolt, one rear tab, reverse lockout plate. Its does …

Hey Guys, I have been trying to tackle an elusive problem on my Z that has been happening since late last Spring. The issue is that During a cold start, the engine taps extremely loudly for the first few seconds, then goes away and it sounds normal. Then once it is warm it seems to just slightly tap, but not nearly as loud. If I let it sit for a little and then start it hot it will tap loud again during startup. However, sometimes about every 10 starts (different days) during hot or cold start I won't hear any noise. I tracked the tapping sound to the head toward the front of the valve cover. I am thinking 2 or 3 valves back from the front. However, I have…

I've got my 4 speed out to fix an annoying drip, replacing both front and rear seals. Spent an hour or so cleaning up the input shaft housing, old Permatex on gasket area, and sealant on threads and washers. Threads go into case, so FSM calls for sealant on bolts, but not much else for help. Ready to put back together, and obviously don't want it to leak. What is the best practice folks have found to get this leakproof? Thanks!
