from what happened I'm pretty sure i flooded the engine of my z today, or badly damaged it. So here marks the end of a good thing, my 76 280z that I have only had for 11 months. Water came rushing in through the driver side floor and I knew i was in trouble and then it died and I still had to get it up my driveway and the only way was to crank the starter with the car in 1st gear and the clutch out, smoke was everywhere. So really what I'm wondering is if there is something I can do with a flooded z (at least thats what I think it is, I'm going to make sure when this damn rain stops). Or am I better off stripping the parts and trying to find another z? all i can real…

I need some tech help on engine performance. I'm pretty decent with cars and motors, but most of my experience is with Musclecar Iron and I'm not up to speed with the Z motor. Let me describe the situation: '73 240 Z, all stock (yeah it has the flat top carbs) with 150,000 miles. Compression seems decent at 160 - 170 PSI Ran decent before I took the car out of service for a bare metal restoration beginning in April of '03. While out of service, I did the tune-up basics to the motor including: - set valve clearance - thought I got it right, but it's possible the motor cooled off too much due to my inexperience with this procedure. Plan to re-check this weekend - new p…

i want to go to a machine shop a get my head polished and maybe ported so the inside is smooth for the intake and exhast and i would also like to maybe shave the bottom of the head for a slightly higher compression. what i am confused about is what exactally should i do to the head and how much to machine it for the most optimun performance and horse power. If anyone has any suggestions i would greatly appreciate it.

During the summer Atlanta heat, my 240z ran beautifully, never going over about 180F. Now that the temperatures have gotten a little cooler, (40-50F), it is taking close to 10-20 miles to show any movement at all on the temperature gauge. Even then it stays very low. I've taken readings from the radiator with a non-contact thermometer and they read less than 120F when the needle hasn't moved. It still runs beautifully other than than those readings. (Of course, the heater blows cold air during this time!) Am I correct in assuming that the thermostat is either faulty or removed. I plan on changing it. I've done this on other cars, but is there anything I should look…

Now i was cleaning up the AFM today on the 1981 ZX then i thought might aswell do the TB aswell.. Now that thing is SMALL or what !!! It only has the single butterfly compared to the dual of the 1979 280zx.. So is the 1981 alsways have the single and the 1979 have the double ? The 81 is manual the 79 is auto if that makes a differnce. The 81 also has the P90 (turbo) head on it and the 79 has the n42. So whats going on ?

I have a question , years ago I owned another car with a inline 6 , and I modified the exhaust manifold to in stall dual exhaust . I used two 20" glass packs , and it sounded real nice , both inside and outside the car. I experienced zzero resonence , and I have heard time and again that it is a problem with the large piping. I am redoing alot of things on my '73 240 , and one is the installation of a modified 280 engine. Nothing drastic , just a street cam and milled head and 12--80 dist, and headers. I have a 21/2" plumbing systime I can stick on . My old exhaust was only the stock 240 , and was shot. So here is my question . What is the reason vary few of us Z drivers…

I have what I think is an early 70's aircleaner assy I bought on eBay. (note the manual summer/winter valve) When I put it on, I took the air cleaner element out of the existing 73 assy and it fit perfectly. Later I ordered an new air filter for a 70-71 aircleaner from one of the many Texas online parts places. What came was about 2 3/8" tall which wouldn't fit inside either of my assy's. Turns out the one in there now is just under 2" tall. I've seen a few eBay auctions for filters for early 70's aircleaners and I've asked them to measure the height. All have come back at 2 3/8". So I'm confused about what I have. And more importantly, where do I get a new airfi…

I couldn't find anything in the archives so if there is a thread on this just shot me to it... What are you guys paying for head work. I am considering sending out my spare head to have it redone and wanted to know what you guys are paying for a basic upper end valvejob/machine work. Bw

Yes, the world's biggest FI fan is starting a thread on carbs...get over it! It is out of necessity. I am curious what a Z runs like on triple 40 dcoe's or Mikuni's. I've been around and in quite a few cars with 44's and 50's, so I have a pretty good idea of what THAT is like. Several people have told me not to consider anything under 44. I never realy had paid attention to anything under 44 before, and now that I have started shopping, have discovered 40's are quite plentiful and reasonable. I know without dyno charts, this is an extremely subjective conversation, but am hoping to glean SOME sort of input. What is the performance gains--if any--of triple 40's over …

I had the thought of hiding all those hoses & stuff by putting a functional air cleaner (oval type) on the top of the engine. Would it work and could it be done? I think the most you would need is a bent hose from the filter to the AFM, and some kind of platform for the filter to mount on.
