I have been looking for a diff clunk. I have put in a isolator bushing at the top of the diff nose and still hear the noise (you can see it in the video) Recently, I went under the car and found the drive shaft had some play at the diff end, not at the U-joint though. See the video. Where can this slop be from? Is this normal? The diff gear mesh? How can I fix this? Thank you. 20190611_180511.mp4

I wanted to remove the valve cover to get it polished, and to also have the valves adjusted. Should I have a mechanic do this, or is it easy enough for me to do myself? Thanks.

Engine pulleys 1 2 3

Good day, Tom here again. In looking in the engine bay, I see the lower belt attached to the lower pulleys, ie...for the fan?, BUT there are some pulleys at the top of the engine bay and they do not have a belt on them. This is a dealer installed AC car, when new in 1970, are those pulleys somehow involved with the AC? The AC system, I see the refrigerant lines going into a small looking black canister on the passenger side. Not sure if that would be the condenser. It is pretty small, ie...5 or 6 inches long and around 4 or so inches round. Thanks for your help! Tom

Question for you - I've had a '78 280z for about 3 years and never changed the engine bay/gas tank fuel filters. When I look at the post gas tank clear fuel filter it looks brand new so I assume the filter in the engine bay is also looking great internally. Should I bother changing these even if they look brand new on the inside? I know these are cheap but if I don't need to change something I'd prefer not to break out the wallet.

Just a teaser for now without much explanation but this could get very interesting! Will do a proper write up as to why and what when I finish the work ... 1/8” increments ... Webcam pointing into carb mouth Nice view ... Timing light with rev counter fixed in field of view for analysis, need to improve lighting ... Let the fun begin!! Ah, no! Children’s activities stopped play at the crucial moment! [emoji22]

Attention all you 70 and early 71 owners! And the rest of you that enjoy getting into the nitty gritty details. I have a '70, blt 6/70 and the A-B valve quit doing its thing. This is a show car, so I trying to replace it with as correct of a part as possible. I got a hold of an NOS valve, P/N 14835-25601, which is supposed to be good up to 6/72. However, it doesn't look the same as the one that came off the car. My early 71 has a valve that is identical to the one on the 70 as well. If you look closely at the picture below, you can see the differences. The one on the left is the one that came off the car. As you can see the input/output nipples are reversed on t…

This topic picks up on a mini-conversation that I started on Grannyknot's 280Z build thread. These little washers are an important part of the NVH isolation design for the Z's rear diff. The design, from an engineering perspective, is a lot more sophisticated than meets the eye, so there's an incentive to try to install a proper replacement if your own have deteriorated (which they probably have, if they're 50-year-old originals). Unfortunately, the part is NLA from Nissan and none of the primary Z restoration parts suppliers offer a substitute. There's been some discussion about the need to use vulcanized rubber. I think that's a red herring (look up, 'vulca…

Timing Issue 1 2 3

1977 280Z, mild cam. I have been finishing up my winter project and everything worked out except one issue, timing. I didn't open up the engine just upgraded the fuel injection system and upgraded the alternator and the old fusible links. New clutch/pressure plate, brakes, bushes, etc so I don't believe the shaft is off. I replaced the distributor with an O'Riely remanufactured one. The only way I can get 10 btdc is (see picture) to locate it outside of the locating plate bolt hole. When I purchased the car it ran good just need some TLC. When I removed the old distributor it was located down so I know it was in the correct position. My question is do you think if I loos…

Any advice to check oil pressure using a meter on the sender? What type of reading would I be looking for. My gauge is not working atm for whatever reason and I just started back up working on the Z after a few years, want to make sure my readings are ok. 71 240z gauge, but it has an L28 with existing pressure sender, I read that the readings will not match up with it being different settings. Ill look into that, just atm Im not getting any reading at gauge.

78 280Z. Factory 4 speed. Car has been on jack stands in my garage for the last year while I've been restoring the underside. Pretty much have finished up the rear end, but my wife really wants me to get it out of the garage for a while this summer before I can finish up the front end. The restoration plan includes swapping out the OE 3.545 diff/4 speed tranny with a 3.90 diff/5 speed tranny from an 83 ZX. I've already installed the 3.90 diff. Would really like to delay installing the replacement tranny for a few months. My question is will the car be drivable with the 3.90 diff and the OE 4 speed tranny? I realize this combo won't be optimum, but by "drivable" I …

Good day ladies and gentlemen, i havent logged in for a long time, but i think thats going to change to being the guy you're sick of hearing from. Im way up north in Newfoundland and i have a 73 that i tucked away in the back of my shed / garage 10 years ago and forgot about. Just retired-a couple of years ago and after clocking 100k miles on my bike im thinking of a more practical hobby. Long story short, I have a rebuilt f54/p90 modified with compression pumped up, ready to go carbureted. Most of the go fast gear sitting in boxes ready to be bolted on but not everything im going to maintain her as a typical Z. Appearance wise other than engine and pipes. at th…
