I have a 75-280 w/91K on it. Got it 2 months ago from So. California. Have spent time getting it tuned, timed, etc and it runs real good. But has developed oil smoking real bad on a long decelaration mode like coasting down a hill. Have done compression check twice, range from 150 to 125 or 130 in #'s 4 and 6. Vacuum is 16"/HG . I adjusted the valves(1st time), no noticiable change. It does not smoke on start up. So what do you all think?? Valve stem seals or lower end IE: rings:cry:

Hi gang, I just drove the Z 2000 miles in two days under a fairly heavy load (try about 700 pounds of baggage) and it performed excellently, I'm proud to say. Only problem is, I have a slight clanking from my engine when it runs now. I'm assuming its my valve clearances since that's what it sounds like. Does anyone have any good tips as to how to adjust the distances the easiest? Like most things, I know most people have their own little trick; I've never done this before, so I'm looking for some good information. Thanks a lot!

I'm getting into the nitty gritty of cleaning my engine while it's out of the 71. Thing is, I want to take the head off to do a better cleaning and paint job and I'm not sure if I should put in the new cam I purchased now, or later once I'm sure the engine will start easily. My reasoning here is because I'm changing the stock distributor to one from an 81-83 280zx, adding a new performance coil, and rebuilding the carbs. Since I've never gone this far with an engine and I removed and replaced the wiring harness I'm probably not going to get the thing started first try. Would repeated cranking ruin the new cam when I'm tracking down little problems here and there?

hey guys, i got the cam timing thing figured out. looks like i was a tooth back on cam timing. so now the thing seems to run half way decent but for some reason the fuel pump eccentric is hitting the valve cover. i'm wondering if i put the sprocket on backwards. it seemed to be the only way to make sense to me but maybe i'm wrong. the way it is now, the shoulder is facing forward. there doesn't appear to be enough clearance for it to be turned around but since i didn't pay adequate attention, like i should have, during disassembly i don't know:o need help here, please! also, i don't know if this is related but it also seems as though the cam cover is hitting somet…

Most of these questions are because I had to custom fabricate (Jimmy rig) some parts on my car because of little things i forgot or incompatabilities. OK The output on the waterneck to my intake manifolds is blocked off... Is this ok? The vacume hose to the distributor is not hooked up, but the manifold hose is plugged (with a bolt and a tightly clamped hose clamp:ermm:) And lets see, I took all of the AC out, well most of it, is there anything i need to be carefull of because of that? The heater will come out soon too. Also I have the 73 with all the smog stuff (untill I ripped it all off and put dgv's on:devious:) so there is a coolant hose that runs arond the ba…

I was told by my engine builder, that they recommend using a 3" exhaust with thier header. Right now I'm running a 2 1/2 exhaust. Is there anyone who makes a pre-formed 3" exhaust for the 240Z? Or is this going to be custom. How much of a difference would 1/2 of an inch make in performance. Any recommendations on this would be great . I'm running a 3.0L F54 block, N42 head, bored SU's, cam with about .490 lift.

I want an exhuast system that can flow very efficiant but i dont want it to be too loud. so i was thinking. since the larger pipe size makes it louder . than wouldn't rather than having one large pipe size. You have 2 smaller pipes be quieter. or it doesnt work that way? Correct me if im wrong about the ;ager pipe size being loader. not really sure about that.

OK when I bought my Z a few months ago the Oil Pressure/H20 temp gauge was broken and the previous owner had a cheap set of guages installed on the center console. Well I bought a new (used) guage for the dash. Also the H20 Temp sending unit was gone and a bolt was stuck in the Thermostat housing in its place. I bought a new thermostat and housing and cover and I ordered the H20 sending unit along with the little bolt collar thing that holds it in. The original wire that connected the guage to the sending unit had been cut. The problem I am having is this, the end of the sending unit is shapped oddly, not threads to bolt on a connector, looks like something should b…

for those of you who don't remember i'm working on a friends z for her. it sat for years so i got it running just to have a valve hang and get slapped sideways by the piston. so she asks me to go ahead and fix it. i pulled the head and replaced the valve, and concequently the guide as well. so i managed to get the head off and back on without dropping the chain. well let me back up. i really screwed up and just started disassembling the thing. didn't bother timing the engine or anything, just yarding stuff out. hey, i'm a SBC guy, give me a break. so when i reinstalled the head, i just got the sprocket back on the cam and rolled the #1 cylinder up to TDC. then …
