I have been looking around for a motor to rebuild for my 240. After all the looking around I have found a 78 280 motor for $400. Is this what i should expect to pay?

Valve polishing? 1 2

I'm getting started tearing down my original motor for my 240Z. L24 w/E31 head. I'm going to refresh it and possibly do a little porting on the head (maybe). My plan is to run SU's, stock cam, 6-2 headers, Crane XR700 ignition. My question then: Is there any benefit to polishing the valves (intake and exhaust)? In theory I should get better flow across the valve along with lessening the possibility of carbon being deposited (hard to stick to a smooth surface). But is there any real measurable increase in performance? Should I even bother?

Hi there ya'll! I got some news. My engine is broke. It makes a kewl new sound. It's kinda like "clink clink clink clink" in very rapid succession. I kinda like it. NOT! I was on my way to work, when I had a los in power. I pushed the clutch in, and the engine stoped. I turned my radio down, and heard that kewl new sound when i restarted. I immediatly turned it off. Un fortunately, I was forced to drive it off the free way to a place that would be safe to stick my z in the back of a trailer. It's now partially dismantled in my garage. I hope i didn't damage it too bad. I think i spun a bearing, becaue when i was pulled over on the freeway i checked t…

I have read many articles on modifications to increase horsepower for the 240Z. Nobody seems to offer a scale of suitable mods showing horsepower gained with the level of modifications done. I run my car in hillclimbs and sprint events but also like to use it on weekend runs. I apparently have an L24 motor with N42 head, SU type, round top carbs and 6 into 2 extractors with 2 and half inch straight through exhaust.( I have not opened the motor to check the internals yet) This engine revs to 6500 rpm before running out of breath. Torque seems to be in an even band from 2500rpm. The addition of an electric fuel pump has helped deliver fuel. Does any one know what the …

Anyone know how 'rare' P90 heads are in Australia and what I should pay for one if I find one? Also, anyone tried the Brian Little (Dr Z) engine mods? Are they sound in terms of engine life? I want to give my project car some grunt but from the point of view of my limited knowledge I want to keep things fairly basic.

Ok. I know we didn't get 280Z turbos in Australia. What about 280ZX turbos? Did we get any of them? Were they even made? If they were available in Japan, I guess there may be a 3 or 4 somewhere in Perth due to the secondhand imports we got. How different are the engines or are they the same? Could I use a turbo diesel block from a patrol and a petrol head? Did they make turbo diesel patrols? Or should I just put a RB series motor in?

I came across a clean 260 dash would like to know if I can use this in my 77 280 I understand the wire harness and guages are different (those i presume can be swapped) other than that will this work? Also being a factory dash there is no UV protection is there a paste, spray or something that can be applied (outside of regular car care products) to protect it?

There is a weatherstrip that fits between the top rail of the engine fender and inside the top of the outer fender. When I removed the fenders I don't recall this piece although it seems the fenders have not been removed before. MSA has them for $27. The question is: is this a simple U channel strip and what the consistancy of it (is it foamy or solid or maybe that gooey tape stuff). Can it be replaced w/ something generic? Also the small flat portions that the fender sits on I was thinking I would use double sided tape (you know the kind w/ a little foam thickness to it). While I'm at it are the fender emblem holes the same for the one's w/ designation (260z, 280z) as …

I went ahead and put a new thermostat gasket in and found that the hose coming out of my thermostat housing and into my manifold was plug with the brown sluge I cleaned that out and then also saw that the opening coming from my thermostat iinto my manifold was also plugged with that same sluge. Curious to see if the sluge went all the way through the manifold. I opened up the opposite end of the manifold where the coolant comes out. I took my my air hose and blew through the manifold. Nothing no air came through the manifold. Does this mean that the manifold is plugged with this same sluge? Let me know. Frankenstein Z
