Ok, I have an L28 that has been _OCOMPLETELY_ dismantled. The block is at the machine shop getting tanked and miced. If it comes back within spec for the bores, what should I soak the piston/rod assembly in to dlean all of the carbon off? I remember hearing something about using some special brush for cleaning them but it has slipped my mind at this point. Also -- if the pistons that came out are within spec, and look OK what are the gains (oustside of oversizing) for getting new pistons and pins? I am definitely doing all the bearings, rings, and rod bolts already, but dont know if I should plan on getting new pistons... Thanks! p

For those of you interested in weight, I picked up an F54 over the weekend, no flywheel, no head, no intake/carbs, 228 pounds. It sure feels like about 300, when carrying it around, and it left some nice marks on the legs.

Hey there. I was just wondering if anyone has actually seen a L-28 diesel crankshaft. I have phoned all over the island and most of the wreckers haven't even heard of a diesel Maxima let alone the crankshaft for one. I knew it would be a hard thing to find but, whoaa! Am I thwarted?:disappoin

Can anyone tell me how much compression/horsepower I would get just putting flat-top pistons in an F-54,P-90 combo? It has dished pistons right now.:classic:

Hi guys, was wondering if anyone has the specs for the L28; I have the Haynes manual for the L24/L26 but the supplement chapter doesn't contain much info on the L28. I was after the wear limit for the compression rings. I'm not sure if it's the same as the L24/L26.... The rings have done a hard 20,000km's......I can't remember the gap that I measured, I took the measurement a while back and forgot to chase it up. If anyone could help or lead me on the right track, that would be great!

I am just about done pulling a very nice condition L28 (F54 casting) out of a 10/81 280ZX - but a question's come up... I thought that the reason why the F54 L28's were the "strongest" ones (for the purpose of building 3.0L engines) was because the cylinder walls were siamesed.... I thought I had read that on at least two different "how-to build a 3L" websites... Is this not the case? Needless to say the L28 I am about to pull out does not have this... what gives? did i misunderstand something? thanks, -e

im not that familiar with these things hanging off the intake. i was told they are called "carburators". need a good book. actually, ive got the flat top hitachi's, what are good options for carbs. my ITS 240z race car has a rebello motor with SU's, but maybe there are better options? -james

i put a hose from the inlet to the pump into a can of gas, then cranked the car.. no gas went into the tube. is this proof my pump needs a rebuild? or do i need to prime it? (i opened it up and put some gas in there). the car has been sitting for many years and all the gass has turned to brown gunk. (i replaced the rubber fuel lines and sprayed gumout into everywhere i could) -james

I have a 71 240 engine that I am rebuilding(re-ring) and am not thrilled with investing another $80 for 8mm arp rod bolts. Have not seen any source for the stock bolts. Obviously putting in new rod bolts would be the best choice, but I was wondering if anyone has reused the 8mm rod bolts and if they had good or bad luck with them(not interested in heresay or regurgitated conventional wisdom. Actual non-racing experience only). Thanks, Victor.
