While we're mincing up this lubrication topic into teensy pieces.... "RESTORE LOST COMPRESSION!".... "TEFLON COAT THE INSIDE OF YOUR ENGINE!".... "WE DRAINED THE OIL FROM THIS ENGINE AND IT RAN FOR 100,000 MILES!" Anybody add any miracles to their oil? I'll go first. Hi, my name is Steve and I have tried oil additives. It started out real small at first, just a little Marvel Mystery Oil, but then it turned into a $1000/day heroin habit. Just kidding. I have never tried any of the big snake oils (Slick-50 and that other one...????). I remember when Slick-50 first came out and it was this pyramid scheme and cost $50/qt! I have tried a few of the other, cheaper, non-gua…

Hey everyone. I'v finally got the money to start my L28 engine build up. I have an 81 L28 from a 280zx. I am planning on doing a cheap, but high performance rebuild on it before dropping it in. I am getting a dual webber setup as we speak. I don't know what else I need though. I want to make this engine capable of running in the 13 second range. I am also using the 5spd from the same car. I am looking to find out what all I will need to do to make this engine that fast. I plan on a complete rebuild, but I don't know where I can get the parts I need? I want a high compression head, flattop high compression pistons. What else do I need to do? I plan on haveing it balanced a…

On a recent trip to the Bay area, something strange happened. Fresh oil change and filter ZX pump with maybe 10 hours on it Sending unit has maybe 10 hours on it Gauge always real consistent...moves quickly and easily to expected levels depending on driving conditions...about 1/4 up at idle, slightly under mid-way at most driving, slightly above half to 3/4 at 4-5r's... Cruising up the 101 at a sustained 90-95 mph. Not much traffic so it was going solid at 42, 4300 rpm for upwards of an hour. Oil pressure ran at it's usual slightly above half-way for an hour and then started dropping slowly. Over a span of 15 minutes or so I watched it fall to below the 1/4 position o…

Does any one out there know of any aftermarket fuel rods that look better than the stock on a L28 280zxt. Trying to dress up the engine but that stock fuel rod just looks like crap.

Here is what happend to me. My friend and i are driving home from drill along an open stretch of Old 40. He has a 2002 Mustang and i'm in my Z of course. We are just kind of cruising, and i'm behind him. He opens up his car, so i attempt to keep up. I notice as i accelerate the car is smooth till about 4800 to 5000 rpms. Then it happens!!!! Same accelarator position and the tach goes back down to about 4600rpms. I floor it and the rpm slowly climbs to about 5300rpms and wont go beyond this. What is my likely problem? Vacuum leak? bad Gasket? improperly set carbs? I have to large round SU's. Thanks for your help in advance. Tony ZCarsRock!!!

This thing is really ticking me off. I am trying to install my new guages, mechnical by the way. And I cannot get the temp sensor out to save my life. I just can't figure it out. I unscrewd the flange, but I can't get the rest of it out. Any ideas on how to do it? I can't fit my channel locks in there with the lack of room. Should I just take the entire assembly off the head and do that way? Thanks

Hi all, Just thought I'd post a message about my experience with ATK Engines. About 3.5 months ago I ordered an engine from ATK. I decided to use this company because I heard nothing but good things about their rebuilds. And, they also have a very good record because they actually TEST the engine before it leaves the shop. Good deal. Anyway, they told me it would be about 4-6 weeks before they would ship it. No problem, that was a little late, but, it gave me sufficient time to remove and prepare the car for the new engine. When the expiration date showed... no engine. So, I call ATK. Looks like they will need another 4 weeks to get it to me. Damn, I really wanted …

Hey, I am wanting to get a tripple gauge aftermarket set for my 72. I am wondering though, For my oil pressure gauge, I will need to remove my oil press. sending unit near my oil filter, and screw in the new probe for the gauge. But, doesn't this car have a fail safe that will shut off the engine if theres no oil press.? If so, what will I need to do to get around that? Also, what size is the oil pressure and coolant temp sender threads/fittings? Thanks

I have two visibly identical dipsticks from the same lower end (N47). I changed them today to see if one fit tighter and discovered nearly a quart difference in "H" level readings. The rubber seat seems very well fused on to the shaft on each, so I doubt any shifting. The printing/checkerboard is a teensy bit different but the interesting part is how much longer one is. The one I was using is 7 1/4" from seat to top of checkerboard. The other one is 6 7/8". That's a lot of oil! Which one is right? Anybody care to measure their dipstick for me? steve77 PS: YES I know how that sounded! Try REALLY HARD not to drag this down...

I am looking to improve performance on a stock 77 280z. I am told that the stock muffler is the #1 resistance point in the exhaust flow. I would like a more free flowing straight thru muffler BUT I would still like it not to be too loud. I will stay with the stock manifold, pipe and resonator for now. A Ractive muffler has been suggested. Any thoughts/experience on my goal???

I have a 71 engine that i am having problems with. Its valve timing was way off and I over revves it causing a rocker to come off on the #3 cylinder at an angle, the valve lashpad to come off, and 1 valve keeper to come off. (At first I thought I only had to replace the lash pad). I tried to put air in the cylinder to hold up the valve but it doesn't want to hold any pressure(I am using a hand pump). I try to compress the spring but when I do there isn't any room to get to the top of the valve to put the other keeper in ( and the valve goes down because the cylinder is'nt holding air pressure). Is there some trick to this? Do you think I broke the valve and that is why i…
