Got a 73` Z with retro 72 carbs. Mechanic says they need a rebuild, won`t hold an idle unless choke is open half way otherwise it dies. It`s $400 for them to do it. Should I attempt it myself or leave it to a pro. This guy is trustworthy.

The question is; can I remove my oilpan without removing the engine from the car. I have an '81 L28 in a '73 240Z, dual SU carbs mated to a five-speed. When putting the engine together I (oops!) left out the oil runner that helps to hold the gasket to the block. I would like to put it back. Any suggestions? Tips? Thanks in advance.

I have a 72' 240 and I also have a pair of 82 280's. One 280 has gone to rebuild the other two. A friend of mine seems to think that it would not be too much trouble to switch the 240 over to fuel injection from the parted out 280. Any info? Also, I lost my starter the other day and grabed the one from the 280. Can I expect any problems from this? Thanks -john-

Hi.I just had a pair of grose jets delivered to my door from Victoria British...I am putting them in my 73 Z with 72 carbs....problem is there are NO instrucrtions...one is marked long, the other short...I can't see or measure a differance (with micrometer)...I have Scott's video and it only makes passing referance to it....help..... I put the short in the rear carb, the one with the shorter tang on the float bowl cover...I used the supplied various fiber washers to set the grose jet as close to the original height below the cover as the original and then bent the float tang to get 00.55 inches to fuel shut off......... its still weeks before the carbs go back on the car.…

I have a 73 with 72 carbs...it has been an adventure getting it running, though it isn't running very well...my current project involves putting a muffler on the beast...I visited my local Nissan dealer and nearly died when told he wanted $170 + tax for the Nissan muffler to fit...................I declined........I have been hauling the decrepid old muffler in and out of the local Minute Muffler, Midas Muffler and everything else that sells mufflers hoping to find one that is approaximately the same size (that a cylinder about 13 1/2 inches long, 6 1/2 inches in diameter with a 1 3/4 inlet and outlet)...it goes w/o saying that NO ONE has a muffler to fit...the closest I'…

Well I'm getting the HP bug here in the snow, the mind starts racing. I have a rebuilt L-28 short block (from my rusted out 77' 280Z) and a good E-88 head on my current 240. I would like to put the E-88 on the L-28 and install a MS cam (grind #17033) Lift int/ex .480 Duration In/Ex 274 I currently have 72SU's, Crane XR3000 ignition, and a headder on the engine. My questions are: 1. will the head/block combo work? 2. What will the approximate compression ratio be with a stock head gasket/L-28 has dished pistons. 3. According to Motosprots they recommend a complete valve job on the head and replacing rockers, springs and lash pads. Is this truly necessary? I understand…

I just converted my '73 flattop carbs to 70-71 SUs. But there is a hose barb coming off the top of the float bowl that I can figure out where it goes. Each carb has one. Thanks

My '73 had air conditioning sometime in it's previous life. By the time I took ownership most the condenser was gone, so I removed the rest of the components. My question is, can I replace the harmonic balancer/pully to a non-a/c type without having it balanced on the crankshft. In other words, are the balancer's internally or externally balanced. It is a rebuilt L-24.

This is a request for information concerning the removal of the intake manifold thermostatic value and abatement of the coolant flow through the intake manafold. I have disconected and discarded, for the most part, the emmisions systems connected to the fuel system. I was looking for tesitimonials on the removal of the thermostatic value and coolant flow through the intake manafold. My concern is low temperaature operation during the winter months connected with living in the northwest. Purportedly, the value is supposed to maintain a constant 150 degree temperature of the coolant through the manifold, however, I have noticed power loss at higher engine temperature op…

at the risk of being a pest......I have succesfully installed a pair of 72 carbs, linkage, grose jets etc...even went out and bought a Unisyn (found that the car industy types no longer seem to know what a carburator (What it's not fuel injection? in the pursuit of the Unisyn; I was saved though when someone suggested I check out the motorcycle and snowmobile shops as they still work on vehs with multiple carbs...bingo $48.00 CDN later I had an Edlebrock Unisyn and it works great)... now onto the latest problem; the car runs OK...still doesn't idle too well . It has differant needles front and rear carbs ??, I have spares from the orig carbs, should I swith to the old ne…

I have a 73 with the stock flattop carbs on it. I was thinking about going to the round top SUs. Are the round top SUs from a Rodster compatible with a 240Z? Or do I need to stay with the SUs from a 240Z. And do I need to or should I also change out the intake manifold? What are some of the things that I need to keep an eye out for when doing the switch.

This was posted to our old tips forum by Trevor: I chased gas fumes on my Z for quite awhile. When I had it all apart a year ago I replaced all the fuel vent hoses with the genuine Nissan ones and I kept getting fuel smell. Part of it was a leaking seal around the fuel level sender which I replaced several times and the last time I noticed that the tank built up pressure inside awfully fast while I was resealing it. I had never noticed any pressure build up when removing the gas cap though. I checked the valve in the engine compartment where the vent line hooks up. And although it wasn't hooked up exactly right, it basically hooked up to the air cleaner and the intake to …
