So today I'm tearing down a very worn high mileage F54/P79 ZX motor. It had low compression, and each cylinder was all over the place. 10 lbs, 50 lbs, 80lbs. Runs like crap. Anyway.. I take off the front cover and "clink" on the floor goes the chain tensioner piston. Pick it up and find about 1/2 the spring inside it. This is not good.... The tensioner body is still nicely attached to the block. There is no way the piston can get back in the body, I tried. How did that get out? Well it did. I wonder how much oil comes out of the tensioner, and simultaneously NOT get where its supposed to go. I decided to do a leak down test before I rip the head off ju…

So I noticed great responses from this forum and so I decided to introduce my self. My apologies for posting away before this introduction. So I'm back in a Z after over 20 years. She's built 12/71, resprayed, triple Webers, 3/2 headers, Abarth exhaust, Tokico adjustables. She will be driven any chance possible. I might autocross her occassionally. I'm coming from 9 years playing with Porsches. Job loss forced me to rid of my 84 Carrera which I loved then tried a Cayman (now for sale) which was great but lacked the old car feel. I love driving these cars and really not one that keeps them in the garage for months. I'm looking forward to having fun making th…

Hello everyone. I'm curious what everyone is able to get for idle vacuum with their aftermarket cam. I have a Colt Cams C542.s with the following specifications. Duration @ .50" 224 I/E or 280 degrees valve lift .510 Lobe Seperation 108" Engine is a L28 w/ about 8.7:1 compression. The best I can get using Megasquirt fuel injection is around 10"s. Sometimes jumps into 11" for short periods. Chickenman and I have been playing with the FI for a while now working out bugs, but my vacuum has always seemed a little suspicious to me. Either way, I just ordered a fancy schmancy adjustable cam gear to play around a little bit. What are you guys se…

Hi all, Im currently reconditioning my L28e N42 in my 1976 280Z and have a bit of a problem. I took my head in to get re-conditioned, and i left my original camshaft with cam towers and chain sprocket in the boot of my daily driver, Rover P5b Coupe, which has since been stolen last week!!! So basically Im in need of a new camshaft but means i still need the towers/sprocket/bolts too. There is a Turbo Camshaft with towers on eBay which supplies all my needs, Im wondering if that will be a straight swap????. Ive had a look through forums and understand there is a difference between NA and Turbo camshafts however im wondering will the turbo one still work with non…

Hello all, My engine was running good, but developed an intermittent metallic sound in the head. I removed the valve cover and discover that the cam oiler had failed. I replaced that with high hopes all would be well only to discover the mystery sound remained. So I did a compression test and got the following numbers: #1=123 PSI #2=115 PSI #3=123 PSI #4=40 PSI #5=138 PSI #6= 145 PSI Now obviously there is a problem with my #4 cylinder. My question is why are the first 3 cylinders all consistently lower than the back 3? I have dual SU's and thought it may be that the front carburetor was partially restricted. However, I fu…

I've got an oil leak in my 260z (L28 engine). Not having a lift, I asked a mechanic at NTB to see if they could find the source using their lift. I suspected either a rear seal (I replaced it a few months ago) or the oil pan gasket. Instead I was told that the upper oil pan was leaking. What is an UPPER oil pan? From what little I could find on the net I know I need to remove a cross member to replace it and it uses RTV to form a gasket, but that's about it.
