I believe the head gasket failed on my engine. There was a loud bang, then the sound of air puffing at high pressure. I discovered that air was coming out between the cylinder block and head by the #6 spark plug. I didn't find any pieces of the head gasket, nor any discernible holes, as the hole would be very thin, but you can definitely hear and feel the air coming out. I think there was a small amount of oil expelled, probably only a few drops; there was no noticeable spattering of oil on the side of the engine bay or battery. I was wondering if anyone has anyone ever heard of this happening? Since it's a sturdy material and compressed there should be n …

is there any way to know for sure if it right hand (normal) or left hand (CW loosens) on the main shaft? I am back to trying a another crack at my noisy trans will get some pic later of what I think may be the issue. But I am closing in on having to remove that one. I watched the village land guy video, he clearly is working on a later model ZX (can see the reverse lockout mech) and when time to remove the main shaft he goes CCW. I cant see enough threads to figure it out. I suppose trial and error will get me there but would rather just know the correct answer. I don't know for sure but I think the trans is an 81, but that just from what I was told.

I was going to set valve lash on my new to me 240Z and decided to check cam chain timing. From everything I have been able to find in terms of service manuals it seems like the chain is off a tooth? Can someone confirm or deny my suspicion? Shouldn't the #1 mark coincide with the center of an "outer" chain link? Also, the horizontal mark is to the right of the sprocket groove, wouldn't this be indicative of being one tooth advanced? Any help is greatly appreciated. Imgur Album Here Also, the silver chain link is way off of where it should be, per the manual the silver chain link should line up with the #1 mark on the cam sprocket. It is like 100-some-odd degree…

My car has developed an oil leak between the block and head directly above the oil filter. I'm guessing it's coming from the cam shaft oil supply galley/line. Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it. I'm going to re-torque the head bolts but other then that I'm probably headed for a new head gasket....oh goodie.

maybe not the right terminology, but has anyone else noted a groove that looks very deliberate on the 1st and 3rd gears? I suppose it could be damage but it sure looks perfectly machined in. Its very shallow, and thin, I will get some pictures later. I have searched google images and sometimes I think I see it on other transmissions. its from a CR 280zx 5 speed. I am hoping to start pulling the gears off soon to replace the bearings, in a hope that is the reason I was getting the gravely sound when I did the swap. I have the housings off, and can hear some noise at least from the front input shaft ball bearing (after cleaning it with some solvent to get the oil …

... with the old engine ? No place to store it. Can't put it behind the barn with the rest of the engines since there are no barns around here. No spare time to shop it around. The Y-70 head (favored in NZ for dirt track cars, or so I've read) may be worth some bucks so I'll save it, but the stock block with 145 K miles and maybe a broken oil ring might not be of great value, so I guess it's adios and sayonara, unless someone has a better idea. Also, the R&R shop can install headers. Saw this at MSA: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/classic19c/15-6017 Says it's for 81-83 280zx. New motor has P79 head so should be OK? Will be re-using the SU's. Mix and m…

my persistent oil leak. back of pan, around bottom of bell housing I replaced the rear main as part of the clutch/trans work, I hope its ok. Seems like the oil leak is exactly the same as before. I have on order a MSA comp pan gasket, even though I don't know why that would be needed. My pan was fine, I was careful about using the felpro, used some gasket adhesive (not sealant all over, just the kind used to glue to pan) and was careful not to over tighten. So when the new gasket comes in I will take a close look at the side seals. I have read that they can be replaced sometimes with the bearing cap in place. I guess its a case by case basis depending on ho…

I have a leaking rear main (I assume, dripping engine oil from the weep hole in the bell housing) and a 5 speed from an 83 that I have been sitting on for over a year. With the long weekend I decided to pull the trigger and get started. Car is up on 4 12 ton jackstands with 6*6's under the wheels taking some of the weight, and backup floor jacks on the cross member and diff. Little possibility of a failure of all of them, so I feel safe. 1st up was the exhaust and all the heat shielding. the manifold to pipe was already loosened up so that was easy. the heat shield was no issue with a little PB to get things going. the exhaust turned into a bit of a pita, I coul…
