I've got an E31 head on a stock L24 block. The head probably has 15K miles since a valve job done by Motorsport Auto in the early 90's. I sent it the head to Motorsport because I wanted a "Z guy" to do the work properly. Reason I'm posting is I'm putting a new chain and like the last time, the chain is really loose. I remember with my E88 head it was always a serious effort to get to cam chain on mark "1". With this head, I go straight to "3" and move the passenger side chain guide to the inner more tight position. Is this an E31 thing or a sign of an improperly shimmed cam tower?? The towers have one shim on them. Stock valves which don't hit the pistons. I …

I've done and read a good dozen different ways to get the fill plug loose including heat, a 10 pound hammer, a cheater bar and my favorite, using a jack with a small cup (Sears sells them for $100) and putting the other end of the wrench in the cup and jacking it up while you have the car on stands. Today I didn't have the small jack but I did have a ratchet strap that I wrapped around the engine crossmember and the wrench. A literal piece of cake.

Replacing my rear transmission seal (it's a five speed-model FS5W71B. Seal is from Motorsport Seal Part Number 32136-U0100). Old seal disintegrated upon removal. Wondering if the inner metal ring (or band) should be removed as well (possible this is part of the old seal)? (see red arrow in pic around 2 0'clock). Thanks you!

Hey! I got this cam from Miss Potter a few years back. Can anyone tell me what lash pads I need to install it on a rebuilt E88 head? Everything, valves, springs, lifters are factory new except this cam. Has this cam been reground? Anyway to tell? Also the cam had some surface rust on the journals that seems to clean up nicely with a scotch pad. Any info is great! Thanks... Polecat

It has been stored carefully in my storage building. Just sitting their. I have the urge to do an engine build, but, not sure I can do anything more interesting than my Datsun spirit L28 I currently have. Eiji's engine has been completely flawless for many miles and a 1000 mile vintage rally and track day or two. But an E31 L24 is just sitting their. It did not burn any oil and did not smoke ever. It had great compression although I forgot what it was, and was running beautifully when I pulled it. I will never take my car back to 100% stock, as the L28 power is too addictive. But I hate for an original Z L24 to go to waste? Any ideas what to do with it.

I'm about to install my Pallnet fuel rail and want to remove a few things from the intake before putting it all back together -purely for aesthetics. I live in the southeastern US, but still want to drive my '78 in cold weather here. I'm the kind of person who will always start (any) car and let it warm up a minute before gingerly driving away. I like to keep the RPMs low until the engine is warm. That being said, how long would I expect to coax the car until it could idle steadily and could be driven in colder weather? A minute? 5 minutes? I believe my AAR is inoperable, or at least inconsistently working because the car has never started with a higher idle unt…

My 1972 240z has a Schneider 274F cam and pertronix 1761 ignitor module and coil. Should i use NGK BP5ES or BP6ES? to avoid carbón fouling at idle during traffic jams? or a hotter spark plug will still get fouled under fuel percolation situations?

been a while since i posted - sucked into the quagmire of moving, work, summer travel, getting 2 kids off to college... all while the z has sat idle in the driveway due to horrible sounds emanating from the rear end (something my kids accuse me of on a regular basis). i finally got moved into the new place, installed some concrete pavers to allow me to jack up the z safely (gravel driveway) and immediately saw the telltale signs of blown bearings in the half-shaft u-joints. that red-iron-primer color all around the joint that comes from the factory lube escaping - i've seen this on motorcycle drive chains that blew the o-ring seals. turning the wheels produced unsettling …

I am trying to locate a bolt to replace a leaky sending unit installed by the previous owner of my '71 240z. I got the sending unit out but it was 1/4 brass pipe and not the correct thread or size. The picture below is from my lime green '72 240z but it is pointing at the bolt I need. To my absolute shock I do not have one of these in my collection (hoard) of bolts. I know it is larger than M12x1.5 as my bolt gauge only goes up to that size and it was still loose. It may be a M13 or an M14 but no bigger than a M14. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I have the MSA aluminum driveshaft. Where you adjust the rod, at bottom of pic, it hits on the drive shaft. I tried to bend it, but it --------------------------------------------------------------------------comes back to same place. Anybody else had this problem ? Not a lot of room to work either. Thank you
