I didn't know whether to put this in the Body & Paint section or Engine section. A few months ago I picked up a 2400 valve cover that is in very condition. Years ago the previous owner had cleaned and wet sanded it to smooth it out. I am wanting to get it back to original as possible but I am having a hard time finding what an original really looks like. Were they painted grayish silver from the factory? Did they have a smooth finish or cast finish? Based on what t looks like now should I just leave it as is? Any details or pictures you guys have are greatly appreciated. Below is what it currently looks like next to the series-1 air cleaner I plan on restoring…

I finally got my block back form the machinist. It's painted, core plugs installed and ready to go back together. Having never done any work like this before, i'm having an issues installing the main bearing caps. The How to book's don't give a great description on how this is done and I am afraid of doing damage using any sort of force. The tolerances seem very tight. The how to book's recommend first filing any burrs on the edges of the caps (I've yet to do so). I've tried lightly tapping them in place with a rubber mallet. Should I place some old rod bolts in, to line the caps up, then tap? Freeze the caps? Should they be oiled first? If…

I have searched the forums and I must be an idiot because I cant find a thread answering my questions. 1) What are the 5 Speed PART NUMBERS that fit a 1972 240Z 2) Where are part numbers located on the transmission? 3) What is the most current information? 4) Will 300zx 5 Speed fit?

Just replaced my side walled mounted solid white fuel filter with a clear one. The fuel level in the filter is only about half way up. Car runs fine, starts easily, accelerates ok (no popping in the exhaust-knock on wood). Is this normal? With the original solid filter one doesn't know what the level is. New rubber feed/return lines from tank to solid fuel lines. Solid connections on filter hoses with screw clamps. No cracks or leaks from filter to pump. Just an air gap in filter itself. Any thoughts? Andy

I have done a small amount of searching and surfing on this to no avail. Does anyone make a SS header for the early Z's? All I've found is plain and coated.

I took my drive shaft off when doing some work on the rear diff and I figured as long as I have it off I might as well replace the rear oil seal on the trany which is getting rather old and seems kind of brittle, dripping gear lube a little. This is on my 76 280z 2+2. I've taken trany oil seals off before on other cars with just a flat blade screw driver and they usually easily pop off. However, this one seems really stuck as if a prior owner put a sealer or something on it. I see in the service manual they show to use a puller but I can't seem to find a thin blade one that will slip in and around the seal. Does anyone know where to get such a puller or have any tricks fo…

So, I dropped off my 5 speed trans at the local shop here for a rebuild while I do my L28 swap. I bought a rebuild kit in advance which I dropped off with the trans. I bought the trans about a year and a half ago when I swap my car from an auto to manual. The tech called me today and asked about the rebuild kit having brass synchros...I told him I knew these trans had 1-4 in brass and the 5th gear sychro was a fiber disc of some sort that is apparently not available anymore. He said "well all 5 sychros are that black fiber material". So we are both puzzled. Did the 5 speeds ever come from the factory with all 5 sychros in the black fiber? He seems to t…

I am sure this is noting new but I recently got a 5speed to go into my 1975 280z (currently has a 4speed) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCxMsHgfGwCVtyRrqXVtll-g?view_as=public I will need to open up the trans go fix the broken oil gutter. Never done this before but found a manual online and plan to take lots of video.Any tips? I do not plan to remove gears or bearing (hope all is well there) and if lucky just fix the broken gutter, put in some new gaskets and seals and call it a day. I assume removing the tail shaft 1st since that is the way the manual breaks it down. This would let me remove the remains of the oil gutter. One thing I noticed is I have…

Someone had asked about this earlier but I don't remember who and it has probably been answered, BUT I'm excited and wanted to post! The little circles on the bottom are markers of how much has been removed, I think there's 3 across the bottom. My machinist friend finally got my E31 finished and he was telling me it was nice and flat, it had been cut before and I could cut it again. He pointed to those circles and said they were indicators of how much had been removed and when you couldn't go any further without shims. Just thought I'd share this as I was curious myself when someone mentioned it earlier.

Going to be installing my L28 in the next couple weeks as detailed in my other thread, but wanted to get a consensus (or at least opinions) on what gasket to use for the header and intake. I have a new 6-1 MSA coated header going on. It came with the MSA gasket. I also ordered an OEM Nissan gasket with the metal portions for the exhaust. MSA states that the header will leak with the OEM gasket on their site. Others say that the MSA gaskets are crap and use the OEM one. I did find one thread though that mentions that MSA possibly upgraded their gaskets in 2005 or so. So maybe the newer gaskets are ok? If I do use the OEM gasket...which side go…
