Off topic alert. I'm asking here because the level of experience is much higher here than where I should be asking. I just bought a cheap disposable Hyundai. It was overheated significantly by the previous owner and because of that, it needs engine work. No surprises here. I knew about all that before buying it and I got it cheap enough that even if I have to replace the engine completely, I think I did pretty well. Here's where I am... I know the head gasket has been compromised and I'm assuming that the head has warped as a result of the heat and will need to be planed flat. But before I pull it apart, I'm trying to figure out what else is wrong. I don't want to dump …

I have a Tilton flywheel I want to use on my 240. Street use only and I don't beat the 43 year old car. Stock or maybe a Centerforce II? Thanks for any replies. Cliff

Hi, so I'm a bit confused at what advance I should set my L24. My manual state 10° BTDC for engines with antipollution systems and 18° for engines without antipollution systems. My engine is a L24 wich initially was with antipollution but the previous owner removed all that crap. Engine has roundtop carbs, headers,... No airpump, no EGR nor fuel reservoir recuperation... So what timing advance should I adjust my dizzy at? 10° or 18°??

Over the past two-three years my 82-83 ZX trans in my 73, rebuilt about 10 years ago with new bearings and syncros, has been making more and more gear whine noise. Not all the time, but specifically in 3rd and 5th. Most noticable on the highway. In forth it's mostly not there, but move to 3rd or 5th and it got noticably louder. During the last trip to the coast, a rising, whining noise when downshifting started to get worse too. Specifically as you pushed the gearshift into the next lower gear prior to letting the clutch out. Going into 3rd was the worst, but other gears were starting this racket too.. oh well, I'm thinking, time for some work again. Couple weekend's ago…

Last summer, I noticed I had some pinging under load (up a gentle hill in 4th or 5th gear) while driving home from a show in Rochester. When I checked my timing the next day, it was dead on what I last set it to in the early Spring. Took it out for a drive, similar temperature and humidity, no problems at all. Not long after that, I started noticing that my idle was occasionally high at stop lights. Not much, just a couple hundred rpm. I figured something was sticking, so when it happened once when I was parking anyway, I jiggled various carburetor, throttle, and choke pieces, but no change. I figured I'd do another minor tune-up, so when I went to do that and was letti…

I'm not necessarily asking for help here, but rather, I'm curious if the armchair Z experts can figure out what is wrong with my race engine. Here is the background... My engine is a F54 block with a shaved P79 head, Web Racing camshaft and a 3-2-1 header. I run SU carbs and a ZX distributor with the E12-80 module. I built the engine a few years ago and it now has two endurance races on it with a total of about 20 race hours. Last weekend we raced the car and the engine was running great with plenty of power. About 6 hours into a 9 hour race it started missing at high RPM just before a fuel stop. We thought it might be a fuel starvation issue, though the AFR never…

This is the transmission mount for a /72 4spd, is this the same mount that was used on the ZX cars? I know the ZX 5spd will fit on this mount, I just heard the ZX mounts were different and if anyone had a pic of it. Thanks, Chris

I've got a 1971 240Z that I am the third owner. The PO swapped out the transmission for a 5 speed and at the same time swapped the rear diff. The rear diff is marked as a 3.36 which I understand was the standard ratio on a 1971 manual (so I am confused why he changed it). I have the original rear diff and axles, but looking at what is currently installed has me confused. Take a look at the pic, it seem that the output shaft stub is welded (not bolted) to the one of the end flange yoke. Am I missing something or is this unusual (at best)? Any recommendations on how proceed? I've been thinking about a Subaru WRX STI R180 rear diff with a 3.9 or 3.54 (wit…

What is up with this elephant oil cap. I see them on ebay, being touted as if they were they holy grail. What's the story on these? did they only come on a particular year? Or are they a non North American market item? I have one in my spare parts collection. Should I shine it up and put it on? Right now, I have one of the super-rare 710 caps on my car. It's neat. If you look at it up-side-down, it says "OIL" isn't that cool?

I have replaced everything in the drivetrain except the Diff in my Z. I am going to do this in stages. First I am going to buy an R180 STI LSD differential. Already bidding on one on Ebay. Next up is the Wolf Creek output shafts so I can bolt up my half half shafts Finally after I save up a few more dollars, I will get the CV shafts form Wolf Creek to complete the conversion. I plan to take as many photos as possible. I may drop the rear suspension to replace the spring top hats. But we will see how bad the 'while I am at its get'
