Since there has always seemed to be a lot of threads with people in need of help with their 280z EFI systems, I have come up with an idea that might get those people in need of help on the right track and give them a little basic knowledge about how the fi's on these cars work! This in return would give us a break on not having to explain everything and how the efi system work so often as they could refer back to the sticky post for those types of questions. Not only this, but they could refer back that post for example and they will know what the parts are called so there wouldn't be anymore of the "black part on the top left", but the actual name and part so we would kn…

So here's my story. I bought this car back in late April, as a running car that needed some work, including a fuel sending unit. According to the seller, the engine was rebuilt about 6,000 miles ago and was in good running condition prior to the sale. The car sat at my mechanic's shop for about a month while the correct fuel sending unit was ordered and delivered. I picked it up about a month ago when finally completed. On the drive home, about 20 miles in, or just as I was 3/4 of the way through the Harbor Tunnel, the engine started to misfire and sputter when I gave it gas and above 3000rpm. I was able to get it to my exit by driving gently and keeping the e…

Hello, Just joined. My first post. I have a 76 280Z with manual transmission and have owned it for about 24 years. a year ago I ran into a leaking injector hose (original) which has cascaded into a replacement intake manifold, new injectors, all new wire ends, a couple new sensors, etc.. When completed it sounded fine but smoked like a crop duster from the exhaust and there was a lot of carbon buildup. I've gone through every test for every component as shown in the bible and the FSM and now it sounds great and I'm getting a lot less smoke though it's still not right. At this point, as it's also clear it's been running somewhat rich for a long time, I figured it woul…

EDIT - Note that the cause was the EFI system relay failing Tried to take the Z out for dinner last night, and only got a block from the house, no throttle response, engine stalled. Restarted readily, but would only idle. WBO2 indicates that the system goes waaay lean when any demand is placed on the delivery system. Today I looked it over. Again, the car would idle fine - but - sometimes (ugh) the pressure (mechanical gauge after filter, before rail) drops off until the engine stalls. Blipping the throttle would sometimes make the regulated pressure pop back up. YT Vid What is bugging me is what the heck in the system could cause the pressure to drop…

The FUEL DAMPER on my 1978 280Z is leaking and dripping gasoline. Aside from the obvious safety issues, it creates a pressure loss in the fuel system. The FUEL DAMPER sits directly above the fuel pump. Its purpose is to provide a smooth flow of fuel to the engine, so it is unwise to bypass it. This is Nissan part 22675-N4205 which is NLA and very hard to find. It was used in the 280Z, 280ZX, 810 & 200SX. The early unit has the adjusting bolt while the later unit does not. But both have the same part numbers and function the same. See the pictures. I have called all the usual vendors and have had no luck in finding one. Motorsport says they can’t even get it out of J…

Hi Guys, My car has been running fine for the last over a year since I cleaned all the fuel lines and gas tank etc. New fuel filter also at that time. Recently there was a leak in one of the small fuel injection hoses on the fuel rail. I replaced it with new hoses (2 of them). Now when I start the car it cranks up fine but after few mins it seems it is starving on gas and tries to pull back and sometimes die if I dont keep the RPM at 2K with a little throttle. Once it warms up close to normal engine temp it can idle normally and I have driven it well over 50 miles at 70mph and no issues. Any idea whats going on?

Wondering if anyone has done this. I found a thread on HyridZ where the main suggestion was to simply bridge 36/39 w/key on to engage the fuel pump. That appears to be a viable approach, if it comes to that. I need to do this as cold start definitely is impeded by lack of system prime. Hot or warm starts are pretty rapid in terms of cranking time What I was thinking was more along the lines of a timer/delay circuit that would run the pump for 3-5sec when the key is turned, anywhere in ACC or On, so that no additional input is required. I've found a range of timer relay/circuit boards that would possibly do the trick, the issue seems to be making it only run once with…

Where would you suggest that I could source a replacement return spring? Mine is damaged (and very rusty)...I'm thinking that aftermarket options would be suitable...just wondering if anyone in the group had already investigated and solved this problem before.

Hey, I went to try and fill my 240z to a full tank for the first time and after putting in ~5.5 gallons (from a little under 1/4 tank on the fuel gauge) noticed a decent amount of fuel coming out the bottom of the car. I got underneath the car and noticed it was leaking a lot from the evap hose at the top/rear of the tank. The hose looks a little kinked and it looks like it was pouring out from where it was kinked. It was leaking down from that spot to the front corner of the tank and down from there. I *think* that's the only source of the leak. The car leaked for quite a bit before it finally got below the level of that hose and stopped. The fuel gauge is sitting at jus…

I'm working on a minor project because I'm odd that way. I'm looking for the connector off of the stock ECU. I don't need the computer, just the connector that's on it. Anyone have any junk ECU's or have any ideas where I can find one?

Hi guys, I just purchased an air/fuel mixture gauge (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N3VGPYS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) and was wondering where to find the number the car should read when driving/idle. Has anyone done this before? The FSM shows fuel percentages but that isn't readable on these gauges it seems. -chase

Ok, I have a 71 240 that I'm converting EFI. This means using an EFI fuel pump. My usual MO here is to retro-fit an in-tank pump. Quiet, secure, self filtering, blah blah blah. Done it to my old 73 years ago and to a couple of my 510's since. Easy peasy as they say. Well the 510's are easy. Lots of room above the tank. Not so much on Z's. If you want to mount the pump in the top of the tank, there is no or very little room between the floor and tank top, and you have to cut a wee hole in your deck then come up with a way to cover it. Then put up with a lump back there for ever more. Not perfect. Well until Vintage Tanks just announced a new product. ht…
