Hi Gang, 1977 280Z with roughly 130.000 miles. Ran beautifully for the first year of ownership - sat over the winter -wasn't properly winterized - new battery and fresh gas in the following spring, and Voila.................... no start:mad: Spins real strong, but no start. If I spray "engine start" directly into the MAF, she starts and runs as long as my finger is on the spray nozzle. Once I stop spraying, she shuts off moments later. My prognosis: there's no fuel reaching the injectors, so I assumed the fuel pump was bad:ermm: I own a 1994 Acura Legend that had a similar "no start" issue but the problem turned out to be the fuel pump main relay. The solder dry’s & c…

Can I change out the AFM (Air flow meter) myself? Dealer did a tune-up and tells me the egine is way rich ("off the scale") and wants to charge me $600 for the AFM alone  . So I think I will give it a go, or have the regular service guy do it? VB and MSA both have the AFM for under $200 with a $100 core. My aim with this one is to end the dripping of liquid (gas?) out of the tailpipe. I think I might get an addition few mpg out of this too (currently ~18, would like 22 (400 miles per tank). thx.

:)I need help regarding this problem that I have on my car. Car is currrently stock. This morning when I start the car, it started fine, until the car warms up and when I drove it, the car suddenly stalled. I was thinking that the fuel filter is clogged/ dirty. So I replaced it and still doing the same thing. So then I inserted a fuel pressure gauge. When running, the reading is around 34 psi. In the OFF position, the reading is 19 psi. I checked the TPS and it seems ok. so as the AFM it opens freely. What seems to be the problem? Does the Fuel Pressure Regulator gives this problem? Car shuts off if you push the pedal and sometimes turns off when on idle. I attached a …

Hi I'm new to the site so i hope I am posting this in the right spot. I have a 1977 Datsun 280z that pops back thru the intake when you give it gas!!! I replaced all the injectors and gave it fresh tune up, but still runs like crap the fuel presure is 20-39 psi. I jumped the thermotime switch and it stopped popping thru the intake but makes it run to rich- black smoke DOES Anyone have any ideas? Thanks Steven

My son's '77 Z is FINALLY on the road after getting new injectors, cleaning gas tank, new plugs/wires/cap/rotor, setting timing. NOW I'm needing some guidance on getting the FUEL/AIR mixture settings correct. Is there an "order" to setting the adjustable screws? Also, how do I set them? (screw with spring on the top of the throttle body. screw on the lower side of the mass air-flow meter. any others?) As it is set now the car doesn't have much umph, even though I have good compression, am running NGK-5 spark plugs, etc. Just want to be sure I'm setting the items that I have control over. Thanks for any assistance. Mark Charlotte, NC

Hi all, I had a eureka moment this morning in my half-groggy state. (Apparently I had been dreaming about fuel injectors, seized screws and bolts, and other frustrations all night. Go figure.) My '78 has this problem that it sometimes gets vapor locked and also sometimes gets air (as opposed to fuel vapor) in the injector rail. The result is hard starting. Part of the problem is worn injectors (which I'm trying to replace). Part of the problem is heat. I figure it this way: I drive to where I'm going and shut down. Then the area over the intake gets quite hot, and the fuel in the injection rail boils. Fuel is ejected to the return line via the pressure regulator …

I'm rebuilding a 78 280. After rebuilding the engine and hooking everything up, the motor only turns over if I jump the solenoid. Fuel pump doesn't run either. Going through wiring diagrams and troubleshooting in a manual for a '77, while checking harness continuity the manual says continuity between terminals 6&8, 7&8 and 8&9. Perfect from end to end on harness, not while plugged in. Manual also says I should have wires in 36 and 39 of AFM plug, but there are no wires there in the harness. These go to relay, I assume for the fuel pump. I think all these problems are related. We bought the car not running and not sure what the previous owner did to it. Also do…

Hey all. While I'm still trying to get my 73 240Z running, I keep thinking about how much good converting my 86 Chevy PK to a TBI did. Even though there's still a couple kinks to work out, the truck runs better and got a couple more MPG (not saying much for a 200,000+ mile 350cid, but meh). I also have a penchant for "resto-modding" cars. Most of my dream projects are taking an old, yet beautiful car and modernizing it without being too obnoxious in the process. Most visible changes are usually "period" mods. Now for my question. I know I'm asking for a storm here, but I'd like to get the opinions of folk that have installed, or plan to install an after-market EFI to t…

There is a hissing sound coming from near my fuel pump. I can't locate it exactly but it's the same area. Anyway I only hear this hissing sound when I put the key into the ignition and power is supplied to the engine. Any ideas? Fuel pump leak or maybe a seal? -Eli

My Z was running fine for a while, then developed a fueling issue. The idle is steady at 1000 rpms and mostly smooth with the occasional pop. When cold (or at least just started) it seems able to rev and pull itself through the driveway, but pretty quickly it loses the ability to rev, sputtering if you touch the throttle, even without a load. None of this affects the ability to idle. Per the manual, I'm going to check the fuel pressure on the rail to see if the pump or regulator are bad, but I won't have access to the tester for a couple of weeks. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so what are other likely causes? I was thinking airflow or throttle position (thou…

I'm driving down the highway when suddenly the Z starts to "sputter" infrequently. It gets worse and worse and more frequent. It felt like the fuel was getting cut off somehow (so it seemed). For a second every so often there was a significant loss of power. It got to a point where the car was no longer driveable so she was towed home. The car would turn over with a little bit more effort involved, but wouldn'r crawl no more than a couple feet before dying. I changed the fuel filter but that did not remedy the problem. A little side note here; I noticed that the radiator had to be replenished with fluid too. I had the head gasket replaced about 50K ago. Any ideas? I ho…

I have a fuel leak from the line that goes from the fuel pump to the tank, on my 76 Z. Can I replace this line with just a standard fuel hose? or does it need to be a fuel injection hose?
