Wheels & Brakes

Discussions about different wheel & tire combinations and the affects on a Zcar.

  1. Hi guys. Hoping for some insight into what's going on with my left rear drum brake. So my car is a 7/72 build, right on the cusp when the brake system was updated. It has the older-style wheel cylinders (with the line coming off at an angle rather than perpendicular to the backing plate) BUT it has the newer-style brake line routing, with the proportioning valve in the engine bay: The older-style wheel cylinders are very hard to find replacements for, but I was able to find rebuild kits and rebuilt both. New steel drums and all hardware on both sides. The problem is that although I'm able to get fluid to come through the bleeding screws on all 3 of the…

I found some wheels that look great on a z however, I can't find out who makes them. Anybody know what wheels they are and who is the manufacture? Thanks in advance! http://www.virtual1.net/dave/newwheels.htm

  4. Any ideas? I get lots of news release that Raybestos is making them from epoxy or some lightweight material but no reference to our early brakes specifically. Don't make me have these manufactured!!! :disappoin

  5. So finished up a 2 day project of installing new Techno Toy Tuning coil-overs. I have some Indy mags that are 14" and I am having a serious time with the ball joints(oem) Rubbing on the rim. For those that have ran or run this setup what size rims and tires did you go with, back spacing width ect would be a great Plus. Pictures would also be wonderful.

I don't know how old the brake pads on my car are (the car stops fine and no squeeling...yet), just wanted to know if you should get your rotors surfaced before you install new pads. Thanks.

I just bought 215/65 R14 tyres for my zed and the bloody things rub on the front guards when I turn right..but not when I turn left. I just had the front end re-bushed...could that have put the suspension geometry out of whack, causing one to rub and not the other? Are these tyres meant to be too big for a z? I wish these places would just CHECK that everything operates as it should BEFORE they take ur money . I can feel a fight on my hands....

I single flared my brake lines! Some of you out there are probably shaking your heads and thinking, "amateur". You're absolutely right! For those of you that are thinking, "so what", you need to double flare the brake lines! I discovered my mistake by creating an EPA site in my garage when I tried to fill the system and the fluid leaked out onto the floor. Running the brake lines was a big enough pain. Doing it again because of inadequately preparing for doing the job right was even worse. So have a laugh at my expense. Hopefully by posting my shame I may be able to prevent another amateur from making the same mistake.

I'm looking for recommendations for the best ultra-performance tires folks have found out there. I have a 1972 240z with numerous performance upgrades, including 16x8 Panasport racing rims (4-3/4 backset). I'm looking at size 245/45ZR16. This is a weekend-only vehicle so these tires will be used exclusively in dry conditions as I will rarely if ever be driving the car in the rain or on wet roads. I'm strongly considering Michelin Pilot Sport, Dunlop SP Sport 9000, Bridgestone Potenza S-03, Goodyear Eagle F1, and Pirelli PZero. Thanks in advance for any ideas. J. Zorzy

The brakes on my 1980 280ZX have become very difficult to stop my car. Pedal is hard and all, but car won't stop quickly. Took it to my Nissan dealer, he says the brake fluid was black. He flushed the system, checked that the power system is working and O.K., the discs are O.K, checked that the calipers are all working, (pistons going in and out) but he says only one caliper is really working well and O.k., (will slide that tire, but he says the other 3 corners seem weak). He doesn't know what is wrong, he says maybe the master cylinder, the proportioning valve, bad brake hoses or ???? I checked the system diagrams and I don't see any proportioning valve, …

  12. I have a 73 240z and the brakes are all locked up at 3 corners. I just need to be able to get this car on a trailer since the next owner is just going to use it for parts. Since the car doesn't free roll putting it on a trailer will be difficult it seems. Any ideas or suggestions? Is there a way i could free up the brakes by removeing pressure from the system or somthing?
